The House of Nicolay

I am currently researching my family and have traced my paternal line back to Gasparde de Nicolay Nicolay (my Great x6 Grandfather) of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha and husband to Johanna Saphira Schmidt. However, this is where my trace ends, as I am unable to find details of Gaspard's father or mother. If anyone has any information that may serve as a link, then I would love to hear from you.

The following information may also be of use:

In France, the House of Nicolay contracted its principal alliances with the families of Vesc, Montaigu, Bailliet, Molé, Maillé, Lamoignon, Mortemart, Fare, Vintimille, of Forbin-Janson, Jarente, Roncherolles, Châtre, Potier of Novion, Bercy, Lostanges, Levis, Murat, Lameth, Durfort de Lorge, Noailles, Grammont, Beaufort and Bonneval.

Nobility of Québec Family Tables

Hello Folks,

Yves Drolet has prepared a nice New Year's present for us, an update to his Tables généalogiques de la noblesse québécoise du XVIIe au XIXe siècle. You can view it at http://members.aol.com/audcent/Quebec_Nobility.pdf. Alternatively, you can retrieve it from http://francogene.com/dossiers/noblesse-quebecoise.pdf

This is a comprehensive set of genealogical tables for French-Canadian families identified as being nobles. The style and format is based on Detlev Schwennicke's Europäische Stammtafeln for European noble families.
It is easy to use and informative. Sources for each table are provided near the end of the work and he includes an index to the families that are subjects of the tables (but not to every surname mentioned in the tables).

I wish I had access to this useful tool when I started researching my French-Canadian noble ancestors.

JP
Does anyone have any experience dealing with the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris? I have found a few families I'm researching listed in the index for the Cabinet des Titres and I'd love to see what's in those manuscripts. (And no, I can't just go to Paris, although I'd love to!) Has anyone ordered copies of this type of information? Does it cost a fortune? Does it come as microfilm or on paper? I know I could hire a professional genealogist but I know I can't afford that. I'd love to talk with anyone else who has had experience doing this type of research.

Thanks,
Patty
this is a long line of French nobility. I traced back to Baron Raul Dumas Damas. My mother's grandmother was Della Mae DeMoss and this is her ancestry. I have in on my tree that I published under the name lizard78. I would like to talk to others from this line to see if anyone has more info/family legends. I know they left france because of the Huegenot persecution and fled to Holland, then two or three (depending on who you talk to, I have only found records on two) came to America as young men, one was definately killed by Native Americans. I know more if anyone is interested.

Was Nicolas Bodin dit Miragouin a Muskeeter?

I am reseaching Nicolas Bodin dit Miragouin, an early settler of Mobile, Ala. and Nicolas Bodin dit MIragouin was the owner of Miragouiin Plantation, which means Muskeeter Plantation, and he had a 14,000 arpent land grant which included the present site of Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile, Ala, and he also owned Mon Louis Island off of the Ala. coast, which Nicolas Bodin dit Miragouin named for Mon Louis, France his homeplace in France, Nicholas Bodin dit Miaragouin also called himself, Knight of the Mosquito because when Gov LaMonthe Cadillac ordered that all citizens of the Province of Louisiana prove their titles there was sort of a squabble between the Governor and Nicholas, but it was all patched up and Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin remained on friendly terms with Governor Cadillac, Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin was the husband of Francoise Pallie, whom he probably married in France before coming to the Province of Louisiana, and they were the parents of Marie JOsephe Bodin dit Miragouin who became the wife of Andre Claude Boutte, dit LaLime, and there was another daughter who was married to a Mr. Alexander, and some other children. Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin died prior to 1764 when the Ala. territory of the Louisiana Proveince was ceded to Spain.
There has been some speculation that Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin was the son or grandson of Jean Bodin, who served as counselor to the King of France and was a very emmient economist in France, but no concluding proof has been found yet. Then the term, miragouin, could translate into musketeer and it is very possible that prior to coming to the Province of Louisiana that Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin was a member of the King's household calvery and friends with the ruler of France and that explains why Nicholas Bodin dit Miragouin received such a vast land grant in the Louisiana colony. I know that another famous musketeer, D'Artgun, had a plantation in Cannes Brulle near New Orleans, in fact in present day Kenner, La., so it is very possible that the His Most Catholic Majesty the King of France rewarded members of his household calvary with large land grants in the Louisiana colony for being in his service. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much.
kitty courts

ENGHIEN, le FLAMENC, CLERMONT, NESLE, ROUCY, ST. AUBERT, etc.

I recently connected to the nobility and having a great time, I have lots of questions about discrepancies in different lines but the one I find most interesting (so far) is a Marie d'ENGHIEN, possibly aka Mariette aka Yolande, who was married 1389 to Aubert le FLAMENC, seigneur de Canny et de Varenne, conseiller et chambellan de Charles d'Orléans, son of Raoul le FLAMENC & Marie de CLERMONT (or de NESLE).

Now Marie is given in some sources as a separate person from Yolande who is also shown with the "dite" Mariette. So are these one and the same person or not? Also they are generally shown as daughters of Jacques d'ENGHIEN & wife Marie de ROUCY. However, a source that uses Mariette & Yolande indicates the parents are Jacques d'ENGHIEN & Jacquelines de ST. AUBERT. So here is another problem, are the two Jacques the same person & he was married twice (which none of the sources I've looked at indicate) or are there two different couples being mixed up?

The reason why this is so interesting is that Marie, aka Mariette aka Yolande, was a mistress of Louis de FRANCE (1372-1407), duc d'Orléans and they had a son Jean d'Orléans dit "le bâtard d'Orléans", then dit Jean de Dunois.

Anyway, Marie & Aubert had a daughter Jeanne le FLAMENC who married Jean III of BARBANCON-JEUMONT, it is through that line I am descended. Thanks, Jim.

Pierre was born in 1783, in France. The Baron died in London before May 1830. Pierre became naturalized and used the name Pierre (Peter) LE FRANCOIS. He bought a property in Cromer, Norfolk, England, which he called The Hotel de Paris. He died in Cromer in 1841.

Has anyone any information that would link a nineteenth-century Princess Amalia de Bourbon to the surname Goutiere or de Goutiere? I have seen claims of such a link, but cannot find any Princess Amalia de Bourbon with such a connection; still less any sign of such a princess's alleged marriage with a Monsieur or Mr Goutiere.

The only Princess Amalia de Bourbon that I can trace was married to a king of France.
Marie Henriette Victoire Melanie O'Lally (1771-1836) (Lally-Tollendal)

Can anyone provide me with details of this woman's parentage? She was the wife of Captain Daniel Murphy and the mother of Henrietta Murphy (who married Edward Studd in Calcutta in 1817).
According to family tradition, she was the daughter of Trophime Gerard O'Lally, Marquis de Lally-Tollendal. However, she is not mentioned in a genealogy apparently signed by her father on 29 October 1817. In this he refers only to his wife Elizabeth and "a single daughter", Elizabeth Felicity.
Might she be an illegimitate daughter? Is there any surviving record of her existence?
royal family in U.S.?

Hello. I have a persistent rumor in my family that my ancestor Reason Philapy (b 1797 in MD, m. 1833 in MD) was related to (nephew of?) Louis Philippe Duke of Orleans, later King Louis Philippe. I have been unable to prove either way but nonetheless want to know where I come from!

Does anyone else have a similar rumor in their family? The name would be Philippe or Philippi/Philapy spelled in any way.

Also, I am curious about a marriage announcement I found in a Baltimore MD newspaper about Louis Charles Philippe Count of Neverlee who was married in Philadelphia to Louise Josephine Clementine la Marne Chermont in 1832. Has anyone ever heard of about these people? How do I find out who was Count of Neverlee at that time? I have searched the internet for "Neverlee" to no avail.

Even if you have no direct info, do you have any suggestions about where I can look for information? I have checked many French royalty websites to no avail. If there is any truth to the rumor, I think that Reason's father might have been an illegitimate son of Louis Philippe d'Orleans, the King's father. But the only illegitimate sons I have seen listed were an abbot and a prior, both of whom died in France.

Thank you for any assistance or suggestions you can provide.

Hello,

A distant ancestor of mine was called Jean de la Vigne. He was born in Valenciennes, France, around 1560, and died in Amsterdam, Holland after 1622. He was also an ancestor of David Ackerman, who emigrated to the United States in 1662 and whose line has been studied extensively.

I understand that Jean de la Vigne was a protestant Reverend (a Huguenot?) who moved to Holland to flee religious persecution.

Can anyone tell me more about this surname or the "de la Vigne" family. This surname no longer seems to be in use in France. Perhaps it has changed form?

Thanks!

Lisa

Can anyone help me with information linking this ancestor to French king?
He was born in Bordeaux region, from information I have.
Considering he was of the nobility, I am wondering if he perhaps served at the Court of King Louis XV or XVI?
I have information that suggests he returned to France at the time of the Revolution. He had married the Lady Therese Laugier. They had a plantation in Santa Domingo, but he apparently returned to France and was killed sometime between 1793 and 1798. His widow remarries in 1989.
I am trying to find a connection or a relationship to the King, as many of his female grandchildren were all named for women of the French royalty.
Any help with this request is appreciated.

I was just wondering if anyone might know of some type of Marquis de Bergerac in France? A great great......Aunt of mine married a Marquis in France after her first Husband died, Prince Gudonov of Russia. Her birth name was Margit (Marguerite) Thurner from Hungary and she was quite a well-known opera singer in Paris. Her second husband, the Marquis, was her benefactor and later she married him. I'm looking in the period of the mid to late 1800's. Anyone know of any Marquis de Bererac (the spelling or exact title name is not certain) as my grandmother only remembers so much. Any help is appreciated.

Re;early Grimaldis

I am descended from 2 branches of the early Grimaldi family. One of my ancestors was Tiburge Grimaldi who married Louis Lascaris de Ventimille, who died before 1406. According to my records, her parents were Andaron Grimaldi, who died before 1340. and married in June 1315 Astruge de Beuil, a daughter of Guillaume Rostaing de Beuil and Beatrice Feraud. I know nothing of her ancestry also. Andaron Grimaldi was a son of Barnabo Grimaldi and his wife Tiburge. I know nothing beyond this. I also am descended from Madeleine Grimaldi, who married Ranier Lascaris de Ventimille, a son of Louis mentioned above. Madeleine Grimaldi was a child of Luc Grimaldi, who died in Antibes in 1409, and his wife Yolanda Grimaldi. Luc Grimaldi was a son of Antoine Grimaldi, who died in 1358, and his wife Catherina Doria, who died in Antibes circa 1378. Antoine Grimaldi was a son of Ranier Grimaldi, born c.1267 and died 1314, who married Marguerite Russo di Sinopoli. This is all I have on their ancestry. I have seen some genealogies online of the Grimaldis, and some are very confusing, and some must be wrong. I'm hoping someone can untangle these lines. Goodbye for now.

EMPRESS JOSEPHINE

My ancestor (born in 1802) was a lady in waiting, member of the Royal House of Holland, and cousin to the queen. She fled to America to avoid marrying a German prince.

Empress Josephine's daughter, Hortense, was briefly the queen of Holland at that time, so I'm wondering if it was possible that it could have been her.
My ancestor even gave her son a French name, Lafayette.
Also, Napoleon arranged a marriage for a member of his family to a German prince, and forced them to marry. This sounds similar to my ancestor's situation... I was wondering if it was even possible to find a cousin of Hortense's.
Any theories, ideas, information about the Bonapartes, info about Hortense, or info about Joshephine, would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Hattstatt/Hatstat geneallogies

Konrad Werner von Hattstatt was a Knight in the Alsace/Loraine area of what is today
Hattstatt --France This was in the 1333 to 1400era.. I am looking for anyone who may be tracing his descendants. I need to know if my lineage connects to this Knight's line as I believe it must. The big problem I am having is that from the last ancestor I have found in Germany---Johann Heinrich Hattstatt-- near the end of the 1600's--records of his parents were burned in a fire that took about 10 years of data with it. So I am hopeing to try to work from this Knight down to a connection to my Johann. Can anyone help me with this search? I would lbe most grateful. I do know that a few generatons from Konrad have been traced and some of his family went to Switzerland and then perhaps to Germany. I also need to know if Konrad was a "Templar Knight" I am trying to research some of these Templars. Thank you for your consideration.

Hi,
According to a family chronicle written about 1900, the Schurdel family of East Prussia came from a French Count who left France at the time of the revolution. He rented an estate in East Prussia and there changed his name to Schurdel.

The original name was de la Chorle, or something similar. I've never seen the name spelled out -- only spoken. Supposedly the great-grandfather died in Dauphine, France, at age 103, but I don't know when that was.

I've never done any research in France, and I know no French.
I'd welcome any suggestions, ideas, information or direction.
Looking for information on the Monyer family. The surname has various spellings and I am not sure which one is correct. The first Monier in America was Daniel Monier, who immigrated in 1818. He came to Philadelphia. Married Mary Phillippi. His family spread across Pennsylvania after his death. According to the family history, the Monier/Meunier family was nobility or upper class people in France. I have been unable to tract down their history in France, but I have been able to do much research on the American branch. I believe they were from Normandie, he sailed from LeHavre.

A List of Persons who have qualified as Citizens of the State of Virginia in District Court held in the City of Richmond----

September 5, 1791

Francois Pierre Tubeuf

Chas Antoine Gabriel Francois D’espada
Marie Eusede Se La Planche
Pierre Francois Tubeuf Jnr.
Marie Cesar Le fevre
Henri Francois Hardi
Nicholas Antoine Isidora de Bonne
Simon Perchet
Jean Baptiste Ragant
Pierre Tenin
Jean Maillet
Etienne Hout
Chas Le Groux
Chas Antoine Guenot
Louis Solevean
Pierre Gotillot
Jean Tenin

searching for the"French Duke" in our German family history; please help

We have lost our family tree dating back to the 1500's and must start somewhere. Our German Koerner family history includes a French duke, however we have no idea how to find him. Our Koerner's included an 1835 obstetric doctor named Adolph koerner who was either Prussian or Saxon or lived in both Kingdoms-his doctorate mentions Putbus. Also, our family homestead is " Agneshoff". Would very much appreciate any leads to retrace who this Duke was, and then possibly our lost family tree. Thank you.

I'm looking for information concerning Count Victor De La Montaigne who fled from Languedoc, France upon the revocation of the edict of Nantes in l685 by Louis XIV. He had one son that I know of who was born on the island of Bermuda June 27, 1750 and who later moved to Pennsylvania, PA. Any information concerning any of these people and the name De La Montaigne would greatly be apprreciated.

de Beaulac/2nd French Revolution...?
Hi... I'm the g.g.g.granddaughter of Henri de Beaulac, who supposedly fled the Normandy area with his brother Peter (presumably Pierre?). Family legend has it Henri made the mistake of buying bad farmland in Vermont which was basically good for nothing else but cultivating stones, so he married a tough Irish lady named Mary ONeal who operated a blacksmith shop (near Bennington?) to keep them afloat, and he considered it a terrible disgrace (the ingrate! :>)

I am esp. curious as to why I can find NO TRACE of either Henri or Pierre in any Vermont Census so far: this branch of the family tree has definitely proved the most elusive!!! If this story rings any bells for anyone out there (cousins?) feel free to drop me an email! A bientot!

I am seeking information regarding a last known "Countess of Guise/ Countess de Guise / Countess of,de Guisedon". There is an apparent relative in our family history but we have no further information and are missing years of history after her, leading up to our farthest traced family, JOSE MONET/HORORTIVA MIRIAL and LORENZO HUERTAS and NICOLASA FONTANA. There are reports of the family fleeing to Spain and then the Canary Islands to settle in Puerto Rico. There is also a lost family Bible that is encrusted with jewels. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please contact me at familysearch2003@hotmail.com

If anyone could help me, I will be grateful.

Thank You,
Fabrice Broyld

LaBoudiere-Count of Monte Carlo

Would like to trace my husband's Grandfather, Francis LaBoudiere who was supposed to be a Count of Monte Carlo. He had two sons, Francis who stayed in France and inherited the title. His other son, Joseph F. LaBoudiere emigrated to America around 1915, and settled in Phila., later Jersey City and NYC. Am told that name possibly could be "de la Boudiere" due to the way children in school (with titles) were addressed.
