Pezelj from Poglizza (Poljica) - Connection to families in Venice?

The Principality of Poljica (Italian: Poglizza) was a couple of times under Venetian rule.

Venice recognized the noble families of Poljica. So there must be some records of them. Furthermore some of said families flew to Venice because of attacs of the Ottoman empire. As they were under Venetian rule, a lot of them had Slavic and Italian writing of their names.

What's the Italian version of Pezelj (is it Piccoli?). Any help or discussion is appreciated

Many thanks n advance! Regards,
Eduard Pezelj

Marchese Of St Agata

I wonder if anyone can help me because at the moment I have no idea where to start looking, so maybe here is a good place !
I have recently discovered proof to a story that my grandma has been telling me all my life ! that my great great grandma was the Marchese of StAgata, born in Naples in 1823, daughter of Prince Ruffano. Her name was Louisa B. Conolly (Luisa B. ??? in Italy perhaps ) after her marriage to Charles Thomas Conolly a prominent Irish businessman when they moved to England and lived at Midford Castle near Bath. Can anyone shed any light on who she was, who Prince Ruffano was, what was her family name etc. Apparently my grandma actually knew her but she is dead now and I have only recently got the urge to research this project. Hope someone can help me.

Thanks
Marc Swinburne ( England)

Peter Carl Barnett Barnato or Barnato

We are trying to compile a family tree. My husbands father was Peter Carl Barnato. Born 1899. We understand that he had connections with Italian nobility...Bardon de Bourbon (or similar) He was disowned by his parents for not marrying the chosen bride...and all the finer details went to the grave with him. He was born in South Africa, evidently registered in France, but because we do not have parental details we cannot pursue further. He spoke of the film Bitter Rice being shot in the grounds of his family home....this was shot in the Piedmont area around 1949. Anyone with ANY information...please speak up!!

Ziani de Venezia

Would anyone know anything about the Ziani (Xiani) family from Venice. From what I know, our family is descended from the Marc'Antonio Ziani who moved to Vienna. Some paper was improperly recorded and became M.A.Xiani and the name became, officially, Maxiani - later Hungarianized to Maksziányi. My great grandmother, born in Budapest, retained some sort of title from Italy, was friends with King Umberto, and derived income from some sort of winery estate in Italy and travelled all over the world. Does anyone know what title the Ziani (Xiani's) could of had? Or would anyone know where I could begin to just start tracing back a tree? Nothing seems to be available for this family even though they were very important in Venetian History. Also..anyone know of why the X was replaced with a "Z" somehow? Thanks!!

Who is an Italian noble?

I once read that only does who descend from an Italian recognized as a noble by the late Kingdom of Italy (1866-1946) may rightfully use the title. What do you think? What about nobles of former Italian States which did not recognized the King of Sardinia as King of Italy, such as the famous Black Nobility of the Papal States???
I would appreciate your comments.
Regards,

There's a new art history movie out recently on DVD about Modigliani and his life. He was Picasso's rival painter, a half italian, half Jewish man who ran into problems with his lover's father because of his heritage. It looks pretty interesting. I haven't seen it yet, but I've been over to the movie website: www.modiglianithemovie.com to check out the trailer and it looks pretty good. Has anyone had a chance to see the movie yet? Or even heard about it?

I looked it up and Svevia, in the 1500s or earlier, encompassed parts of France and other nearby countries, but I cannot find anything regarding their families per se. Anyone heard of this? The ring is now in the possession of one of my cousins, which, for the life of me, still hasn't appraised it or dated it. Please email me!!! Thanks so much!

Illegitimate Italian Royals, esp. Savoy

While most of the other royal houses of Europe acknowledge their illegitimate offspring, giving them lands and titles, Italian nobility act as though it never happened. Yet, according to my research, Vittorio Emanuele II virtually maintained a maternity ward at Montcalieri Castle near Turin for his "breeding ladies". Seems that the good King liked to slip off into the foothills to go hunting and didn't like to spend the nights outdoors alone. If you're a peasant and the King knocks on your door, you don't turn him out! It is said that he could have populated a small village. One of my ancestors was one of his sons and I would very much like to know his mother's name, when he was actually born, etc. [Vittorio took good care of his children, but they were under strict orders to conceal their true parentage to the rest of the world.]

Any clues as to where I might start looking? Thus far, I've found two of them, but surely someone [most likely on the other side of the pond] has researched the subject thoroughly.

So Little Information to Go On

My great-grandmother was supposed to be in the Italian Nobility. I have so little information, not even her last name. She was about sixteen around 1900, because the family story says she was presented with a ball gown that was hand beaded and cost about $900 at the time. She was quoted as having said, "You expect me to wear THIS?!?!" and tore it to pieces with her bare hands.

Later she fell in love with a Roman commoner and married him in spite of her family's wishes. She was disowned. She and her husband moved to Chicago and opened an ice cream factory where they became quite wealthy. They returned with my grandmother to Italy and lived in high style - thumbing their noses at her family. But suddenly the money stopped coming. They returned to Chicago to find the factory boarded up and their business partner long gone with the money. My grandmother ended up begging in the streets of Chicago when she was 5 years old. My great-grandmother was said to have gone slightly mad and died not long after.

I checked with the Chicago Historical Society, and all they have on record for ice cream factories around that time with Italian sounding names is Giani Brothers, but that wouldn't be anything identifiable to her.

I wish I had more information, but my dad died when I was 10 and his mother (the one who begged as a child in Chicago) died within the year following. I have nobody else to ask for names, as they have all died long ago.

I was hoping someone out there had heard the story of the tempestuous young woman who tore up an expensive gown, married a commoner, and was disowned. It's such a romantic story, it would be nice to know if it were true.

Thanks to anyone who might have heard this and can respond.

Vicki
