I have recently come across a document from the village I was researching. This document translated referred to a Friar (lived in the 16th century) Who's father was called Giusto from Cascalenda and his grandfather was Giovanni of Aragon. It listed that Giovanni brother was King Ferdinand of Naples.
Would anyone know who this King was ?

Re: Any information regarding the Criscione

Hi,

I had done more research on the Crisciones of Ragusa and Comiso. There was a small branch of the Crisciones that moved to Comiso. As a matter of fact, I believe that my family may have come from there as well. My GM told me that my Criscione family was not from Ragusa but from a smaller city next to Ragusa, which was Comiso. In fact, I can't find my relatives’ records in Ragusa after certain period of time, which supports my grandmother's story.

I have started to look through the Comiso records and found some Crisciones, some from the aristocratic line and some not. There are not many and I am still digging through the records.

The story of the aristocratic line is as follows. Some of the wealthier Crisciones married well. One branch married into the Occhipinti family which held the Baronage of Salamaro e Corallo from the early 14th century. During the Italian unification, Isidoro Criscione, whose mother was an Occhipinti, cut a deal and became the Baron of Corallo in 1872. It should be noted that earlier members of this line of the Crisciones are descendents of Filippo DiStefano who was the Baron of Cutulia and a descendent of a Borgia/DiStefano family line.

My GF was Carmelo-Emmanuele Criscione; his parents were Giovanni Crisicione and Rosaria Tidona. Giovanni’s parents were Stefano and Angela Leggio; Stefano’s parents were Carmelo and Giuseppa Tummino. Stefano's oldest brother was named Paolo, which according to Italian tradition should be the name of his GF. There was a Paolo Criscione that lived in Comiso and would fit the time period. My uncle also though that Paolo was the name of my one GGF but I am still proving it.

Although this is the first time I have seen this, but my only advice would be that if he was born in Italy, try sending a letter to the place he was born, and ask them about him. Also have you tried looking up in his town if there are anymore surnames as his. I hope this helps, and good luck to you.

Regards,
Patricia

Hi,

I hope I am posting this in the correct area. I am hoping to find some information on a line of my husband's family.

We have traced a line back to a Joseph Sedenary in England in 1803. He was born in Italy in around 1756. Family stories have always said he was from nobility, and we have found here on ancestry and at the Este University Library, two coat of arms in the name of Sedinari. One from the 17th century, the other from the 18th - 19th century.

See: http://www.cedoc.mo.it/estense/info/img/stemmihtml/01873.htm...

I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction to find some information on this family.

Thank You in advance.

Re: Any information regarding the Criscione

I'm still continuing my research. But it looks like the Crisciones were originally from Southern Albania or Northern Greece. They arrived as mercenaries in the 1420's under the invitation of the King of Naples, to quell a revolt of his barons in Sicily. The Albanian soldiers arrived under the leadership of their Prince Gjergi (George) Skanderbeg. The revolt was quickly put down and the Albanian soldiers were invited to settle in Sicily if they wished. At that time the Ottoman Empire was encroaching on their homeland so many decided to stay. There is also another story that the Criscione family originated in the town Himare in southern Albania. They had waged a decades-long conflict with the Turks but where evenually overwhelmed and had to be evacuated to Italy. They were invited to settle in northern Sicily under the invitation of the Papacy.

The name Criscione was originally written Crixunj, they settled in the Palmero area and are recorded as being members of the Eastern Orthodox church until the 1700's. Around 1520 the name was changed from Crixunj to Crisciuni then later changed for Crisciuni to Criscione at about 1680's. Members of the Criscione family move to southeast Sicily to the Regusa/Comiso area, as well as Marina Regusa. It should be noted that the early Criscione family or Crisciuni many very possibly be related to the Prince Skanderbeg family via marriage (Musacchi family) or may have been a noble family of northern Greece itself. It is also suspected that many of the Criscione families use George as a first name because of the family's relationship to Prince Skanderbeg. That's all I know as it stands, hope it helps.

Any information regarding the Criscione

I have done some very broad research into to the Criscione Clan and have uncovered some interesting information. It appears (though not conclusively) that the Crisciones originated as mercanaries from either Northern Greece or Southern Albanian, hired to fight in the local feudal wars. As a reward for their service they were given land to settle, mainly because their homeland was overrun by the Ottoman Empire. I have been able to trace two clans, one in the southeast of Sicily and the other in the Palermo area. The interesting fact that has emerged is that the Crisciones (which I can’t trace after 1680), married into some of the most powerful noble families of the area (Ragusa and Comiso). Their names appear on the perigee of the houses of Renda, Lupis, Campo, Melfi, Bonaventura and Crisafi. The area is also littered with casas, palazzos and villas with their names. I have done some research regarding the Baron of Corella. My question is would anyone be able to fill me in on the broader history of the family and if the Criscione name was changed in the past

Thank you so much for all of your research. I had found the manifest before and I do apologize, I should have mentioned that.

Unfortunately, the problem with him, according to my father, was that he lied about his birthplace when he came here because he did not want his father being able to find him. He was actually not Sicilian, but from Northern Italy and that's where things get murky. He had red hair and blue eyes and his mother was supposedly German, but she was supposedly a maid and died when he was a baby so we know nothing of her. As I said, he died in the early to mid 50s, so I never had the chance to meet him and even my grandmother never said anything about his past. My father says he distinctly remembers watching the Italian news with his family when he was very small and an Italian Count or Duke coming on and begging for his only son to come home. He says he then remembers his father becoming angry, getting up and turning the tv off. The noble died a short time after and my grandfather died about a year later, so you can see why its complicated.

Again, I really do appreciate you taking the time to research all of that information. It's just a crazy thing!

Does anyone have any advice on how to find out a true last name? My grandfather came from Italy in the early 1920s through Sicily and was supposedly nobility. He passed away when my father was very very young and his last name was changed when he came through Ellis Island. I have no idea what my real last name would be or how to find out where he came from. Supposedly, the original last name was several words, but I also do not speak Italian. I don't care about titles or money or anything like that, I just want to find out where I came from. Thank you!

According to the following article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1378610/Countess-...

Anna Lucrezia ("Annalu") Corsini was born in Florence on November 15 1933. In earlier times, her family produced churchmen as well as bankers, among them Lorenzo Corsini who reigned as Pope Clement XII from 1730 to 1740.

Annalu Corsini married Count Cosimo Andrea ("Gingio") Sanminiatelli, the eldest son of a well-known Pisan family, in 1955. The Count's uncle, the writer Bino Sanminiatelli, lived at Vinamaggio, the 15th-century house which was used by Kenneth Branagh as the setting for the film of Much Ado About Nothing (1993).

The Corsini family is vastly more well known than the Sanminiatelli family, but maybe you should try to find a site about Pisan noble families. Hope this is a starting point.

kind regards,

C BdeL

In my family their is a little story, a scicilian baron, Bellalagrotta, had an affair with the maid, that produced an iligitiment child. My Great Great Great Grandfather, Anotnoio Pecorella. The Baron gave him to the peckorella family to take care of who was in vita at the time. We don't know when Antonio was born, but his son Gaspare was born in 1863 and died in 1947. We have no doubt thi story is true. The problem is Bellalagrotta dosn't exist. We think it might have been a nickname or a made up name because my family is very ashamed of this and dosn't like to mention it. If anyone can find bellalagrotta, or sombody who could be it, please tell.

I have heard similiar stories which my grandfather had told my father which had been relayed to him by his father. The whole "Blood revenge" is true not only with peasant but also with nobility fighting amongst themselves for total power and complete control. The story is that twin brothers with our last name were weary of the battle for money and power so they decided to leave, one came to the U.S./California and the other brother ended up deep into Mexico/Mexico City.

My grand father was a descendent of Sicilian nobility. However, he and his two brothers never mention this fact to anyone not even their wives or children. The true story of our family tree was uncovered by accident year later, after their deaths. I had read that when Italian immigrant from noble families came to the United States they hide their heritage. The reason being that the nobility was so hated by the peasant class (especially in the south) that they feared social isolation or even blood revenge. I was curious if anyone had also heard of this fact. It does explain why some family have a hidden past.

This is an interesting point. Regardless of whether or not the Kingdom of Italy recognised the numerous preceding houses and families of Italian nobility, I believe that descendants from those noble houses or families still have a right to say that they are of noble descent.

That said, with the abolition of the Kingdom of Italy in 1946, surely all Italian nobility has also been abolished and therefore no claims can be made to land or titles as they do not exist anymore.

Hi! I'm hoping that someone linked to this group may be able to help me.

I've traced my ancestry to a man called John Domenecko Volente who married in the UK in 1813 and who, according to the 1841 census, came from "Foreign Parts" (believed to be Italy). 'Family legend' has it that he was the son of a noble who fled Italy after falling out with his father. I believe he was born c. 1784 but I don't know when he landed in the UK.

Can anyone help me in either tracing his Italian ancestors or confirming the 'legend'?

Many thanks
Kent
e-mail: purbrickfamily@ntlworld.com or kent.purbrick@ukaea.org.uk

Maybe with help of Venice, since some of the Bodazza negotiated with Venice as diplomats from Ragusa.

Maybe the family members who survived flew to Venice and have there been accepted as venetian vasalls and have been send to Poljica to ensure venetian control.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

EdeP

He was kin to Canadian marine, aide Maj. Charles Pierre de Liette, both killed 1730's Battles of Ackia, Tupelo, Missisippi Military District. They bere kin to the de Tonty family of France (from Italy) and colonial America. The de Liettes and de Tonty's, in Paris, were called "Ancient Italians".

I can't identify him; however my "very limited" knowledge of Italian translates that as:
The Marquess Dias Torqas, Vicereoy (Governor) of Naples, Italy

You might try contacting a library in Naples and asking about the city's previous governors and thier history.

What records do you have for him (like marriage information etc), I take it he stayed in SA. What makes you think he was registered in France?

No relation to the infamous Barney Barnato?

Peter Carl Barnett Barnato or Barnato

We are trying to compile a family tree. My husbands father was Peter Carl Barnato. Born 1899. We understand that he had connections with Italian nobility...Bardon de Bourbon (or similar) He was disowned by his parents for not marrying the chosen bride...and all the finer details went to the grave with him. He was born in South Africa, evidently registered in France, but because we do not have parental details we cannot pursue further. He spoke of the film Bitter Rice being shot in the grounds of his family home....this was shot in the Piedmont area around 1949. Anyone with ANY information...please speak up!!

Ziani de Venezia

Would anyone know anything about the Ziani (Xiani) family from Venice. From what I know, our family is descended from the Marc'Antonio Ziani who moved to Vienna. Some paper was improperly recorded and became M.A.Xiani and the name became, officially, Maxiani - later Hungarianized to Maksziányi. My great grandmother, born in Budapest, retained some sort of title from Italy, was friends with King Umberto, and derived income from some sort of winery estate in Italy and travelled all over the world. Does anyone know what title the Ziani (Xiani's) could of had? Or would anyone know where I could begin to just start tracing back a tree? Nothing seems to be available for this family even though they were very important in Venetian History. Also..anyone know of why the X was replaced with a "Z" somehow? Thanks!!
