I believe the issue is, the Powhatan family was in England for almost a year. They were rather good looking people and both parties were very interested in forming alliances.
King Powhatan was in charge of a rather large area with some reports that it went all the way to what is now called Washington State.
The Rolfe family most likely knew about this and passed it down to the Randolphs of Peter Jefferson who is Thomas Jefferson's father. In 1751 Peter Jefferson and Joshua Fry setup Queen Alliquippa in land owned by the French in present day Pittsburgh. The Jefferson Fry map of 1751 clearly shows this. About 50 years later, Meriwether Lewis pushed back in his brand new boat designed by Thomas Dunseith and Alexander Lewis at that very spot. That patent was issued to Alexander Lewis when his great uncle George Washington was signed into office in 1789. That patented keelboat design allowed keelboats over 25 tons to navigate rough water without tipping over.
The story of Pittsburgh goes like this, a 45 year old Christopher Gist, a 21 year old George Washington and a 15 year old Jacob Myers, all surveyors for the Ohio Company, visited Queen Alliquippa of Mckeesport Pittsburgh Christmas eve 1753 to exchange gifts. Before they showed up in the camp, they delivered a letter to the French Commander of Fort Duquesne from the Gov of Virginia. The letter was to demand that the Commander and his men leave the area.
Christopher Gist's grandmother is Edith Cromwell the granddaughter to Oliver Cromwell. In the mid 1600's Oliver Cromwell's men are in St Mary's County MD chasing Catholic Stewarts or at least there has been reports of such in the mid 1600's.
