Re: Mary Queen of Scots
Hello klj82780:
It is a lovely family legend. Many people have been told they descend from Mary. However, in most instances it is nothing more than family legend.
The French language had no W and that is how the phonetic spelling Stuart came into being. The Stuart spelling pre-dates Mary, but it was popularized in usage when she returned from France. Many wanted to either have it appear they were related, show honor to her by adopting the name, or "jump on her coattails," and so adopted this spelling. There are no less than 25 ways to spell "Stewart."
Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots) had one son. James. James became King of Scotland and England. James VI & I. His lineage will be found all over the Internet. There are no "legitimate" heirs. There *may* be some wrong side of the sheets descendants. Take a look to Peter Peninsky. He has the most realistic trail back to Mary. Do not get sidetracked by the information out there re Michael, who styled himself HRH Prince Michael of Albany, who wrote "The Forgotten Monarchy." His genealogy has been proven false (and worse). You may come across news articles from a year or more ago.
Mary de Guise's lineage will also be found all over the Internet.
When one "discovers" "facts" or inherits someone else's research, one should go back to the primary documents to prove the work.
The British Royal Site has the lineage of the Stuarts. It would be a good starting place. And Burke's Peerage --- in many libraries and now available online for fee. Or perhaps available at your local or local university library online.
Good luck to you in your genealogical endeavors.
