I am deadended trying to locate real birth information for my husband's great-great grandfather, Alfred "Rayfield," b. 1863, supposedly to Thomas and Mary Ann [nee Smith] Rayfield of Clerkenwell. Family lore describes how a carriage bearing the crest of the Queen's Court would visit periodically and a veiled lady would bring toys for Alfred and payments for his support. Alfred is also described by the rest of the family as having been a "true gentleman" in demeanor all his life. I noticed that Alfred fits neatly into the biannual births of the seven Rayfield children, as number five. Perhaps his mother, Mary Ann Rayfield, was a wet nurse for someone, lost a child and became a convenient adoptive mother with few folks the wiser. How do I even begin to search for veracity? Or some alternative truth?
