many of these family legends turn out to be true - but exagerated.
My grandfather said we had a sailing ship's skipper and pilot as ancestors
the two Philip Evans I have found so far are mariners but ordinary seamen
so your ancestor may have been *employed* by the princess for example
always work back in time
and look for three items of evidence for each event
