Actually, Blanche was his grandmother. He was only 3 when Blanche killed his family, and he was spirited away by the Cistercian monks. The monks raised him in a world of peace and security. If you asked me to return to a scheming, murdering bunch of infighting "royals" and give up the only life he really remembered...leave the warm and beautiful northern Italy countryside for a land of strangers whose language he had probably forgotten, I'm thinking he didn't think it was worth it. As it was, he married a wealthy heiress, inherited a silk and agricultural estate, why leave? I wouldn't leave that for some promise of a bloody battle between people I never even knew in a foreign land, even if it was mine by right. If he wasn't raised to be greedy and power hungry, what more could a man ask for?
