He "got away with bigamy" because he never committed it. The story of the marriage of George III with Hannah Lightfoot is fiction. The purported marriage certificate is a forgery; her so-called Will, dated in 1761, where she mentions her husband the king, is absolutely a fake: she was already dead. She married Isaac Axford in December 1753 and he survived her.
