I have been researching the ancestry of Sarah Heath Palin for my blog and thought some might be interested.
Shelton or de sheldonne

There is a bit of a puzzle, which I may or may not have solved involving the 1st lord of Shelton, Robert De Sheldonne.

Robert De Sheldonne and his brother Guy De Sheldonne were noted as having been supporters of William the Conqueror.

Now, the puzzle, Shelton is in Norfolk England, just south of Norwich. There is Shelton, Shelton Common and Shelton Green, all in close proximity of each other.

Robert of Mortain, as well as his brother Guy of Mortain, both of which were William's half brothers, are the ONLY Norman nobles of merit granted lands in Norfolk by William as Lords.

The first Lord De Sheldonne died between 1095 and 1107. Considering the circumstantial evidence, is it possible that Robert of Mortain and Robert De Shelton are the same man?

I have found out that I am the 22nd descendant of King Edward II of England as well as a long list of other royalty on my grandmother's side. Also a descendant of King James I of England (of the Bible) on my grandfather's side. Does anyone know how I can persue this furthur and how to find more information. And if my place in the line of descendants is of any importance or just wishful thinking on my part!

I am of Royal descent, from both my parents blood lines....

I just began real geneaology work of my ancestral blood lines, this past December, 2001, and found important people in America's earliest history -that was my family, then going back to the mother countries, for many generations, I found I am of the old Royalty blood lines, going all through the Royal blood lines to way back, blood lines of England, Scotland, Ireland, and more...
Kings, Queens, so many......I was stunned, but somehow I always knew. What was really strange to I, is I found that both my parents had some of the same Royal blood lines, after a point. I have been happy since knowing, who my ancestors were. I feel very proud.

Antoine's son Jean De Navarre came to america around 1560 give and take a few years. My question is if Jean kept his title and his children kept theres and so on, I was wondering what my title would be. Jean brother is Henry IV. I don't know if that would make any difference. Would anyone know this answer?
thanks a million
jaycee

Do any of you know anything of any Van Valkenburg (any sp) family in Holland?
Or where a lady in waiting would have lived in the 1800s in Holland?

My ancestor Katrinka (Catharine) Van Valkenburg (brn. 1802) was a cousin to the queen, and a lady in waiting. She was also a member of the Royal House of Holland, and fled to America to avoid marrying a German prince. I have no idea which queen it would have been, who the prince was, or even where she would have lived.

ANY facts about Holland, theories, or information would be GREATLY appreciated!
Dear Yvonne, "Lady" is part of the myth. The entire little story of that branch of my family tends to be a little grander than I think it possibly could have been. Also, some of the facts that I have been able to establish differ from the story. Nonetheless I had looked, online, in Debrett's and Burke's to no avail, but I am not practiced in either one so they still may be resources. Thanks so much for your efforts and your interest.

English Title Question

I'm rather new to genealogy but have quickly become fascinated with the subject. I recently came across a letter dated 6 June, 1893, signed by "Sir William Brooks". It was a letter of recommendation for my great grandfather, who apparently had worked for Sir William as some type of carriage driver or something to do with horses.
I'm curious to know just who Sir William was. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should start looking?
Thanks

Losing Titles

Why is it that people lose titles so quickly? I descend from John Douglas, who's father was a Lord of Hamilton and grandparents where the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton. A book said that when John was 12, he ran away from Scotland to London, where his Uncle promised to make him his heir. While in London, he was kidnapped and brought to America. This was in the early 1700's. I don't understand why he had no title after that. Was it taken away because he ran away to his Uncle, or was there some other reason. And why would he not move back to Scotland once he was an adult?

If a family has a reason or grounds to claim an English title, what are some sources of information that might tell about proceedures, etiqutte, and laws involved? And, at what point does a hereditary title "die" - or does it? Does anyone know the current ruling monarch's position on "old crown" titles? I hear the French tend to honor all titles, past or present, but they are the most permissive.

I recently found out that I have an extensive royal ancestry. Edward III, II, I, Henry III, King John, Henry II, I, William the Conquerer, all the way back to Charlemagne. I have been told by a friend from England that I might qualify for a royal title if I wasn't American. I am wondering if anyone has any information on this subject? I find it very interesting and would love to see if it is true, but can't find much information on the qualification for titles anywhere online.

SYMON WILICHOWSKI was knighted...

I am looking for information about my gr. gr. gr. gr. grandfatehr, SYMON WILICHOWSKI. He was knighted around the year 1830 in Poland for "deeds performed for King and country". Later he sold the tittle for a reason that is not known to any of our family. He was born in Poland in Wolwark (unknown date) and died in Poland on 27 February 1869. He was married to MAGDALINE SZULC and their children were JOSEPH, KANSTANCIA, MARCIN, and VALENTINE. Joseph would call his daughter, Martha, his "little princess". He said that he did so because if his father had not sold the tittle and had they still lived in Poland (Joseph was the only child to travel to the USA) that she would be a princess.

Does anyone know why he received the tittle or why he would have sold it?

Amber

For a couple of months, I have studied the leaders of Haiti. The majority of them declared themselves monarchs. But, I could find little about my ancestor, Toussant L'Ouverture. It is said that he liberated the slaves against the French. And, after he did so, he declared himself a monarch (either a king or an emperor). But, many of the historical books say nothing of this. If someone can find if he did, I would be very grateful.

THANK YOU!

Can anyone tell me whether this is even a possibility? I believe her father's name is Gilbert.
HELP in Researching Old Royal Titles in Middle Europe

I am studying the area known as old Middle Europe, long BEFORE the creation of the old German Empire in 1872 and the modern nearby countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, etc.

My particular interest is the period of circa 1400 through the 1700's. The development of Prussia is my primary focus. I am aware Prussia was a series of small regions and areas spread over the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. I would like to know how their royal house(s) were organized.

I am descended of a Prussian circa 1760. This man was a person of fierce determination, huge physical size, gentleman's manners, and personal wealth. He was totally devoted to his children's welfare.

Would the title COUNT have been used by the royals of old Prussia?

I need a reference to the appropriate research facility, and the corresponding correct internet site.

Your help and assistance in this matter would be appreciated by myself and entire family.

Please leave a message on this board.

Thank you,

Kattieman

How can I find out if my gg-great grandmother was a Lady In Waiting? I have been told she was prior to immigrating to the USA but I have not been able to confirm it. Her last name was Stokes(?) and she came to America about 1917. Thank you!

minor British nobility, please help!

Working with deceased relative's genealogy notes about woman named Teresa b. in Baden or Rheinland, Germany, 1790, sister to "Sir Wellington". Have looked at royal genealogy websites without being able to identify her in those records.
What surname might she have been born with? My aunt wrote down 2: WELLINGTON [?] or WELLINGER. If she was related to the Duke of Wellington, wouldn't it have been WELLESLEY instead?
Could anyone with experience with Anglo-Irish-German noble families please help a beginner.

"Guienne, King of Arms"

From my web-surfing today, I've learned that Katherine de Roet's father was "Guienne King of Arms", and that the herald of Richmond has also been "Guienne King of Arms" since the time of Edward IV. But I'm still clueless as to what this title means, other than that Guienne was (is?) part of France.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Beckee
