Surname Boards have lost the Author field on list and on posts made to the boards.

Is this a permanent change?
. If so the board lists need to have the author field removed from the header.
. If not then there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

-Allen-

Lately I can no longer see anything in the Author's name column when viewing a message board. Is this ever going to come back?

Also for quite a while, the time it takes for a selected message board to come up, is very long, sometimes more than a minute. I don't have this problem with other web sites. Anyone else having problems with that?

Message board notices

  At various points over the years I have arranged to be notified by e-mail when new messages are posted to certain boards. This is very useful but I have a couple of questions.
1) Some of these are now being automatically forwarded to mailing lists that I am on, so I no longer need the notice. How do I stop them from coming? There seems to be a procedure for managing one's mailing lists, but I haven't found anything comparable for message boards.
2) Because the hotmail accounts originally had very limited storage, I set up different accounts (e-mail addresses) for the major names that I was searching, and tried to have the notices sent to the appropriate one. This has always been tricky, because Rootsweb seems to want to send everything to me at the same address. Is there a way around this?

Cheers,

Wayne Neily
(hoping that the authors' names soon re-appear on these boards)

Surnames field - general questions

Apologies in advance if non-administrators are not supposed to post here but this seemed the most appropriate place to submit my questions.

In recent days, a board which I regularly read and contribute to has been embroiled in a dispute regarding the use of the surnames field. I don't wish to get into the details of the dispute at this time except to say that it involves the administrator of the board so I don't feel that I can pose these questions directly to the admin.

I think one of the things fueling the issue is a lack of basic understanding about the surnames field: what is its purpose and the rules governing its use. Hence, I am trying to get answers in hopes it can help frame the context for future discussion.

Question 1: What is the basic underlying purpose of the surnames field and why is it so important that *all* surnames in the body of a message be duplicated *exactly* in the surnames field? I am deliberately pretending ignorance to some degree here but please bear me out. Note that I am not asking *how* to properly fill in the surnames field (I think I know that) but rather am more interested in an explanation of *why* I should do so.

Question 2: What rules govern what a board administrator is required or permitted to do in maintaining the surnames field of queries posted to their boards? In particular, I am interested in what are the rules regarding queries that have surnames in the message text but the surnames field is left blank (either accidently or on purpose). Are policies in this area well defined for all or are admins left to their own discretion?

Question 3: Where can I find the rules governing surnames field entries that board users are supposed to know and obey? I have seen things posted on this topic but frankly I have by myself not been able to locate anything I would call definitive anywhere on Ancestry/Rootsweb. Could someone post links to the "official rules" or at least describe how I can navigate to them?

Thank you very much in advance for any light you can shed on these topics. Depending on the answers, I may wish to ask a few follow-up questions.

Kindest regards,

Jeff

I had transcribed some Bible pages from images of the scanned pages that aonother person had posted in Rootsweb Marr family message boards. Someone is asking me if I have the images which I don't. I went looking for them so I could email them the link and the messages with the attachments of the images have been removed. I checked the mailing list and archives with no luck. Why would they have been removed and is there any way to access the images? Thanks, Dianna

Has anyone realized the new Message Board format is not MAC friendlyy?? I can not respond to any post and I can not start a new thred. This is on ALL Message Boards, including this one. I had to use my son's PC to send this!

Also, the new format does not set up properly and the buttons are not aligned. It is definitely not MAC friendly. ANYONE using a MAC will have no way of communicating this to you unless they have access to a PC comouter too. And most MAC users don't have both! PLEASE re-format the Message Boards to include the MAC users!!!!

Jeanne

Mail list question, need help PLEASE!

This probably isn't the right place to ask this question but I don't know where else to go. For some reason, I can't post messages to mail lists, even to the one that I personally admin. I checked everything suggested in the FAQ. I AM subbed to these lists. I send only in plain text. I'm sending to the same addresses I've always used. Here's what happens-- I send a message, complete with a subject in the subject line, and then when my message goes through a mail list and gets delivered to my inbox, only the subject shows up but the message content is gone. It's not the "not me too" option because the other list members receive only my subject, no message content, too. I also checked the archives and the subject is there, but no message. I don't know if this is a Firefox problem or what. Is anyone else having a problem? Any suggestions? It's so frustrating!

These are scans that she made of documents- altho some of the documents do contain images of the original document.

I hope this is clear.

Has anyone else not been receiving their Message Board alerts? I don't think I've received any since 1/19/08, but I've checked, and several of the boards have received postings. Also, I checked and someone responded to one of my postings but I wasn't notified.

I can't find anywhere on this site to actually contact someone and tell them of this potential problem, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

Debbi

Can't find my recent thread posting under "Search the Boards". Help!

New to all this, sorry. I went to main "Message Board" page where there are two areas to enter info - "Search the Boards" is at the top and "Find a Board" is at the bottom. I went to "Find a Board" and typed in my family surname - in this case "Fullerton". The next screen up shows "Surname > Fullerton" - I click on "Fullerton" and it takes me to a board with all Fullerton posts. Great. My recent post is at the top. Fine. But when I go back to the "Message Board" home page and type in the name of my ancestor in "Search the Boards" - in this case "Humphrey Fullerton", my post doesnt' come up. What am I doing wrong? Any help is very much appreciated!!

Phelps@fullertonassociates.net

I could search for my wifes family, the BLACK family, but it's totally useless also.
Goodbye to this board on my computer.........

New Board Request - Pugh-DNA

For the past several days, I have been trying to reequest a new board that will focus on the Pugh Surname DNA Project. Every time I go through the process of requesting a new board, I get a message that the page I requested is unavailable. The same message that you would get if you clicked on a dead link or if you were not connected to the Internet. I had hoped that this would have been corrected by now but it has not so I am reporting it.

Thank you,

Jeff Pugh

Is there any way to set time stamps for individual users? I try to keep up to date with the boards in My Favorites but sometimes it's hard to tell if anything new has been added since I last checked without going to the board itself. If there's a lengthy thread at the top then I have to scroll through the posts to see the latest entry. It's not a huge deal but if there's a way to make it easier, I'd sure love to take advantage of it. Thanks!

"Request a Board" feature not working; is it just me?

Have been trying to request a new surname board for over two weeks and cannot get feature to work. Same goes for trying to report problems/abuse for existing query messages.

When trying to use "request a board", after clicking on "post" button, computer takes me to my ISP provider's generic "can't find website...check spelling...." error message. Very frustrating that even the "little" features do not work properly and no one seems to care enough to fix in timely manner.

Anyone else experiencing this difficulty? Is Ancestry.com no longer supporting these functions [HINT they've done something: genealogy.com has exact same problem with trying to add a surname to their boards; I haven't checked genealogy.com in approx. a week].

Is there any place on Ancestry.com's web site that gives customers a timely report of what's not working and what the estimated repair time is? I would be a lot less frustrated if I knew they were aware of issues/problems and were attempting to fix.

My annual subscription [8th or 9th year] is due the end of February. Just more fuel for the fire why it's time to let subscription lapse; zero support, declining service and no one at Ancestry.com seems to care. Their focus seems to be on quantity vs quality......

Thanks.

I'll go to other boards like Genealogy forums.

When I search a forum with a keyword and get a list of posts to view, I find some that I'd like to track further back to whom they were replying to but can't seem to always figure it out.
gadreau

I'm trying to find information on my grandmother Marie Alice Gadreau. She was born around 1900, she was adopted by the Anderson family in Maine (the anderson family was Dougal Anderson who was a famous painter) My grandmother mother gave her her up at a church and the Anderson faimily took her in when she was a little girl. She had good memories of the Anderson's farm. They had a birth cert made for her when she was around 7years old so she could go to school but it didn't work out for her because she was half indian and the kids didn't like her, on the census her name was marie alice gadreau and she had 3 brothers charles born 1905 edward born 1896 david born 1902 mother was bella born 1877. I'm trying to find out where bella was from and if her last name was Gadreau or was she married into that name. Edward and Bella was born in Canada and the others I'm not sure. I also found on the census that an Alice Marie was living with a Lareau family when she was 1 years old. Hope bella might be a piece of someone's history so I can connect to the next generation.

If i do exactly the same search again, it will tell me no posts found again. Try again...it will find 5. Does anyone else have this problem with it finding 0 posts when you KNOW there are posts out there?!
This keeps happening with all searches i do, so I dont know if there really aren't any results or whether it's just saying there aren't. Just in case it's needed, I'm on a mac and using safari. Thanks in advance for any help given!

I can get messages good, but after I type the new message on the Board, and try to send it out, it gives me a error sign, this is for a new message or for a reply, I can get the messages OK, I am OK on the Lists, can any one tell me something to try to get a new message out. I have even tried even disconnecting my Firewall, but that did not work. I just hope that this one will go out.
Thanks  Peggy

Are there rules on obituary postings?

I would like to know if it is okay or if it is wrong for a rootsweb user to post an obituary on a locality board that is not the place of death. For example, if someone was born in County Mayo, and died in Philadelphia, is it wrong to place the obituary on the General County Mayo board?

There has been some conflict about this, and it would be helpful (in general) to have unbiased ruling or opinions on this.

There are some users who watch the Ireland County boards to learn where relatives of their ancestors may have moved, since records are poor for the older time periods. Obituaries are one clue to where a relative has moved.

Then there are other users who believe that obituaries only belong on the board where the person died. Their reasoning is that people only search those locations for obituaries.

Obviously these are two types of uses for obituaries - clues where people were born and clues where people died. People who can only search backwards don't understand how an obituary located at a birthplace can help anyone. People who are searching forward believe that they should be placed where all locations are mentioned in the post, especially the birth place.

Thank you for your time and opinions. Please address the question of board location only, and not the people who are commenting. :)

Thank you!
Susan Daily

This may sound like a silly question and I may be missing something very obvious, but is there any way you can search for a member using their username? Yesterday I invited a family member to view my tree using the e mail address they gave me,and today it has a username there instead of a message saying that the person hasn't responded to the invite that was there before.I am almost positive that this family member is not a member of this site so am wondering why there is a username there and want to check if this is the person I invited.

I can't read the messages because I can't find the thread.

Also the information at the base of the forum list suggests that I have to subcribe to the Scotland General Mailing List - suruely this would mean that I would be alerted to every Scotland General Forum message instead of those I am interested in?

A very perplexed and very, very confused RW member.

Is there a Msg Board 4 General or mail list help anywhere?

I cannot seem to find a HELP message board either for general rootsweb help or for help with rootsweb mailing lists. I cannot subscribe to the "help" mailing list and enter a query because I am not receiving any replies (even my own) from mailing lists that I have already subscribed to at this time. I have added all of their "from" addresses as safe senders (Outlook 2007) and still I am having issues.

Where does one go for help then? I was hoping to find a message board for mailing list help and post a query there. But there doesn't seem to be one that I can find.

Any suggestions?

Mc, Mac, and M'

Here is a general question for a general board. For over a hundred years, libraries have interfiled Mc, Mac, and M' names. McNaughton, MacNaugton, and M'Naughton - not to mention Mcnaugton and Macnaughton - all mean exactly the same thing. Why do we have to look under at least two spellings for all our Scottish ancestors? Of course, this isn't as bad as some CD-ROM compilations where they actually SEPARATE the Mc/Mac from the stem name with a space. Maybe the moderator of this board can bring this question to the attention of RootsWeb and Ancestry.com decisionmakers.

Has something happened to the Message Boards or have I clicked on something that changed it? I don't like the look of them now. If I clicked on something or it's my computer PLEASE tell me how to undo it.

The format I'm getting now is horrible. The posting box doesn't look so great either! I guess I'd have to say everything from start through preview and finish I don't like.

I also don't like not being able to preview the attachments, I can't tell if they are as I want them. We'd all like to be able to make corrections after we've posted something. We can edit with Post-ems on WorldConnect, why not extend them to here if nothing else. After we've posted Post-ems we can edit them. Trying to correct in later posts doesn't work, not everyone finds the corrections.

I'm attaching screen shots of these new formats. I'm trying anyway. It didn't post. My fault!

Thank you,

Orlena
~~~~~~
Where did the navigational links go????
Where did the handy navigational links go that used to be at the top of all the web pages go?  When I go to the pages now there are practically no graphics - just words.  They look like crap! The navigational links that used to be at the top of all the web pages (i.e. home, family trees, mailing lists, message boards, etc.) are gone now. I used those a lot.  I'm using the same shortcuts I've used for years to get to my boards.  Does it have something to do with my browser?  I'm using Version 6 of IE which may not be the latest.  Has something changed?  If those of us who have used the Boards for years can't find our way around, how do they expect new users to???  I've spent years adding data to these Boards and now I have this sick feeling in my stomach that everything is being screwed up.
Also, I have a lot of links from my MoGenWeb site to Board postings and now when I go to them some of them look like crap - the formatting is all out of wack, etc.  It's like the paragraphs are compacted and then maybe there will be one line that goes way off the right-hand side of screen.
Are the programmers responsible for making these changes even experienced Board users?  Do they have a clue about genealogy?  Why do they keeping fixing what ain't broke????
I suddenly seem to be unable to find a way to open "my favourites" when opening up messgae boards. Also the format of the screens seems to have changed (for the worse). Is this a problem with AOL? Anyone else having problems?
MESSAGE BOARD FORMAT
I am not sure on the proper place to pose my question. It has been a while since I was on rootsweb. Other than having mass problems for changing email and so forth, I am wondering what has happened to the format where you could see all postings for a particular name or subject. I now cannot do that and wonder if I am doing something wrong. I can only see current messages from one thread.
Thanks for any help or explanation.
Does anyone know why my various posts, which all currently appear on RootsWeb Message Boards, do not show up when I search for a keyword in my Subject Line? Posts by other Users showing that particular word do appear, but, regardless of whether I search for a word in the subject or the body of my message, my posts will NOT come up when I search. They turn up right away when I search the phrase on Google. How do I fix this?
Thanks!
Kat
Suddenly Rootsweb is no longer remembering my Sign in. I have alowed all various versions of the sites for Rootsweb Message Boards to be allowed through my firewall, but it hasn't helped. The only way I could post this message now was to shut down my firewall! I am typing as quickly as I can!
This just happened in the past few hours. Any reason why?  I am using IE 6.0 and Zonelabs Firewall on Windows XP.
Thank you - hope it can be resolved. Message Board use is getting harder and harder every day.
Thousands of Messages on Message Boards Poster Name Changed to Carole Bays
Thousands of messages on the message boards now show the poster's name as Carole Bays and not the original poster's names. This has happened in the last 24-48 hours.  If you click on the name Carole Bays it doesn't produce registration information or e-mail information.  It just brings you back to the message with that name on it.
Just a small sample of the messages now showing Carole Bays as the author are on:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.new...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.new...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ill...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.new...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohi...
And many, many more.
The message boards have been updated
As you can see, The Ancestry and RootsWeb message boards were updated today.
While these updates did not include all of the features advertised last summer, you will notice significant improvements to the look of the boards, particularly on the thread and message displays. For instance, you can now choose to view more threads per page (up to 50), and you have a choice of viewing each thread in "Thread" or "Flat" view.
Improvements were also made to the underlying board technology that will help us keep the boards running smoothly.
In addition to the updating the look and technology of the boards, there are other updates and changes that you should be aware of:
- Registration is now required in order to post a message. This will help message authors keep their contact information current and cut down on board spam.
- The "Community Guidelines" have replaced the “Board Rules” as the "rules" for participation on the Message Boards. A link to the Community Guidelines can be found at the bottom of all message board pages.
- "My Notifications" have been renamed "My Alerts". You can find a link to "My Alerts" in the upper-right corner of the Message board pages.
- Some tools, such as "Add Board to Favorites" can now be found in the Page Tools box.
- The board "Links & Announcements" have been renamed "Board Information" and a link to it can be found in the Page Tools box.
- Clicking on an Author’s name will now take you to their Public Profile (if they have one).
Important note: If you have posted a message to the boards in the past using a "Post Name" and "Post Email," they have now been replaced by your account user name and email on all of your posts.  This is part of our effort to make it easier for you to update your own contact information in one central location.
To view and update your account username and email address, please click on the "My Account" link in the upper-right corner of the message board pages.
The Board Help and Board FAQ pages have been completely updated. Links to both pages can be found at the bottom of all message board pages and they are a great resource to help you become more familiar with the boards and these updates.
Please click on the Send Feedback link at the bottom of the message board pages to let us know what you think!
Regards,
Ancestry Community Product Management
Update on the Board Updates
We want to thank you for all of the feedback we have received through the boards, blog comments, and “Send Feedback" links. We regret that we cannot respond to all comments individually so please know that we are listening.
The message board team has been very busy this week reading your feedback and fixing bugs. We have also spent a lot of our time planning and developing adjustments to the boards based on that feedback.
Our first priority in this post-launch period is to fix anything things that are broken (also known as "bugs").  Often when new code is launched and/or a database is updated (both happened with this board update), there are bugs that are not caught during the QA process or things that don't work correctly when the code goes live.
One bug with the "Last Post" column that caused a lot confusion was fixed Wednesday. The Last Post column was displaying the incorrect date and this made threads on a board appear to be sorted in random order, rather than by order of the most recent reply or new thread.
The column is now displaying correctly and threads with the most recent replies (and new threads) are at the top of the list. This makes it easy to locate the newest messages and replies posted to the board. Because threads are sorted by "last post" you don't need to use a separate "date"-type view to be sure you see replies made to old messages along with the new messages.
Other bugs we have or are working on include:
- My Alerts, My Favorites, and "Boards I Admin" which are displaying in incorrect order.
- Board Information-related bugs.
- URL's within a message not displaying as a link.
- "Author" field Advanced Search searching incorrectly.
- Reported Firefox and Netscape browser-related bugs.
- And more...
After fixing bugs, our second priority is to evaluate your feedback to help us plan and develop adjustments to the boards. Below is a list of some of the adjustments we have been working on.
Note: Some adjustments have already been applied to the boards and some are still in the planning and development stages:
- Adding a link to view all of an author's messages.
- Updating the My Favorites page with category information (to help clear up confusion over which "General" board is which), and a drop-down to view more favorites per page,
- Displaying the full subject line.
- Changing the link color of the threads you have clicked on.
- Adding "next thread" navigation.
- Adding the ability to sort threads by "classification" type.
- And more...
The message board team is working hard to make necessary bug fixes and planning and development of adjustments takes time. We appreciate your kindness and patience during this process.
New Message Board Layout
Hi all
(1) The new layout is causing some difficulties - How can you view (as before) an expanded thread - not for a particular posting/message but, the whole of that county - Before, you could choose to expand or not ALL the messages and, it was easy to see if someone wanted a bit of help - now, you have to click (& then page changes) each individual message from that 1st page before you can view the thread for that person only, and, if like me you connection is very slow, its a real pain and takes forever likewise, if you pay for a particular connection which has a limited download/upload per month !!!
(2) Every time I do a reply, I am getting a email message showing my reply - AAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!
Would really appreciate an answer - perhaps I am just being thick on this one
Thanks
There are two copies of my post "Can't retrieve Deeds, wills, etc."
This is because the first time I clicked on "post" I was taken to the "Error Retrieving Thread" error page for Message Boards.  I used back button on keyboard to go back to the message and clicked on "post" again.
So the message was posted the first time, even though there was no indication of this because the Error Page was displayed.
This is going to be really fun.  For someone, not for Boards Users.
Bookmarks to individual posts that worked on last Tuesday now don't work, the URLs for all messages have been changed.
So now I get to spend a lot of time re-establishing bookmarks to documents and to messages, such as ones I am working on responses to.
Went to a Message Board where I know there were documents I want to bookmark.
Searched under a term I believed would retrieve them.
The search results list did indeed list them.
However, clicking on the message-title link took me to an error page "error retrieving thread" for each one of them.
I used my mouse right button to copy the URL.
Pasted URL into browser window.
Got same error page.
Does this mean we can't retrieve deeds, wills, obits, biographies, etc. that were posted within those categories?
This is a disaster.
