Candace (Teal) Gravelle - West Georgia / East Alabama transcriber!

I would like to add Candace (Teal) Gravelle to the Volunteer Appreciation board.

She lives in OREGON! But her knowledge is equal or greater than many researchers who still live "Back Home." Her family has circled my husband's for years and we often cross paths in our research. About 5 years ago, she even LENT me by mail, several books in her collection for me to use as needed. Living on the West Coast, like me, has forced her to find alternative sources to just walking down to Grandma's family cemetery.

She is currently transcribing Randolph Co., Alabama newspapers from the early 1900s.

She has done same for Heard Co., GA and Cleburne Co., Alabama. She has also transcribed Homestead records and many, many CSA / Civil War Pension Applications.

The researchers of this area are very blessed to have Candace making her contributions.

Respectfully,

Valerie Freeman

Hi everyone including Pops :-)

I just wanted to take a moment and say how much I've appreciated Jim for all of his years of hard work maintaining his many lists and 800 message boards. That has to be some kind of record and worthy to be noted for posterity.

I appreciate anyone's willingness to give of their time and resources to any good cause and genealogy is certainly one of them.

I wish you well in the years ahead and hope to "see" you sometime on the Internet! :-)

Take care!

Rick B

I have been reading some of them and you have helped a lot of people over the last month, including me!

Genealogists are a friendly and helpful bunch, aren't they?! And thanks to Ancestry and the board administrators for the work they do as well.
YOU NEED TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED MORE!

Until recently, needing advice, I was absolutely unaware of WHO and WHAT was involved to maintain the boards. Ancestry needs to frequently "send up the flag" about the people behind the scenes, inform people of how many boards you maintain, the work involved in the day to day "housekeeping", let people what your duties are as well as what you can't do. In essence they need to make everyone aware of your efforts and the fact that you VOLUNTEER to do it. I'm quite sure that on those boards there are individuals who think some computer is back there doing all the work! I will make it point to try not to add to your workload in any future posts I make! If they would add a link where one could move their own post if they know the posted in error would, at least a little, lighten the load some. My thanks again for all your efforts! Good Luck

Just want to say thank you for your help in August, re; WJ Stewart MP. Made some contacts and am getting a little information, but unfortunately he was a quiet politician. What you said about him starting work etc was in his obituary, also that he had a son, but was not named, pity it would have been nice to have contacted any other relations there may have been. Thanks once again.

. . . to Gordon and Mary Lee Klaus for their work with transcribing cemetery data in Adams Co.

Though my own interests are rather narrow, compared to theirs (my focus is on my mother's family, not the whole county - just the Jorandbys in the West Arkdale Cemetery, descendants of the Jorandbys, Hansons, and Bjornebys who homesteaded in Strongs Prairie Twp in the 1850s), I hope that others at this message board join me in appreciating their work. I think we're all in their debt.

I want to send a HUGE thank you to Katheryn Devine for all her help and support these past 5+ years in helping me locate my father's birth family. It all started when we found out his birth name was FITZWATER. Arrmed with that information and Katheryn's expertise, we were able to get the answers we were seeking. Katheryn is unbelieveable in her knowledge and kindness to have helped me each step of the way. I cannot sing her praises enough. I have to say that the entire FITZWATER family should be grateful to have such a knowledgable and good hearted person working so hard to keep the records correct and intact. When it comes to geneological research, accept no substitues! Katheryn is THE BEST!

It has been a few weeks now that my sister and I have been there, but I wanted to thank all of you wonderful people there.
I went there with nothing other than I knew my Great Uncle lived in or around that area. Luck was on my side that day for while I was there, I was able to get all the information on him and his wife. It really was an experience. At the same time though that I was looking, so was someone else that came there from Nelsonville, Ohio, I'm from Vermilion, Ohio and at the same time we were united. It was a blessing that two different people would happen to be at the same place at the same time looking for the same family. I had info on him, looking for info on her and she had info on her looking for info on him.
The people there at the Sosiety were so helpful and friendly, they actully went out of there way to help.
I want to tell anybody , that if they get the chance to go to the Athens Genealogy Society that they must do so, if nothing else but to say thank you to the people there for all they have done for all of us searchers.
140 year old crime solved

Many thanks to David MacDonald from Powder Springs, Ga., who at this site two years ago posted a bizarre request.

David could NOT find his ancestor and after looking around also could NOT find the people who were buried next to him at Camp Chase Cemetery.

David MacDonald asked for help at this site however but with little results. David's theory was that someone had stolen his ancestors body from the graveyard.

From doing a lot of research at NARA and from reading the Official Records and from reading the period newspaper accounts a crime has now been solved.

David correctly idenified the six soldiers whose bodies had been stolen by a Dr. Joab R. Flowers on the night of November 24th 1864. They were: 1) Hiram Bland of Ga. 2) Thomas Stephens of La. 3) John Lester of Tn. 4) Curtis Hooks of Ga. 5) Jonathan Lindley of Ga. 6) Hensley of Va.

Dr. Flowers was caught with the body of Curtis Hooks and it was re-interred back into the cemetery. The five other bodies were sold to a Cleveland Ohio Medical College for dissecting material.

So thanks again David MacDonald for coming forward with your theory and being correct.

Thanks so much to the volunteers who transcribed the 1850 US Census for White Co., IN, and to those who transcribed the immensely helpful Delaware Co. marriage records. These were invaluable help for determining whether my distant cousin had a "secret" second marriage after her husband abandoned her, or whether a same-named woman had a very different life path. The latter turned out to be the case, but there's no substitute for being able to follow the trail. Cheers and raves!

I owe a great big thank you to Cathy Arthur. She did a massive amount of looking things up for me in the Marshalltown, IA area. She was speedy and sent me more than I hoped to find. RAOGK is a super program for people unable to travel especially. Thanks again, Cathy.

THANK YOU BRENDA !!!!

This is for Brenda, My genealogy Angel. One day last year I decided I needed my great aunts obit to shed some light on my great grandma, so I went to the RAOGK site and found Brenda. Upon My request she went and found her obit in the local paper. It was very lengthy, and she copied it all by hand. After the usual thank yous and a little chitchat we drifted our separate ways, but I was the richer, the obit was a treasure trove. What I didn't know was that about six months later she would be reading a local paper and come across an article about some lady’s 100th birthday, and the name rang a bell and she thought of me. I then received an email asking if I was interested in a gold mine. After the treasure she had already sent I was defiantly game. What she had found was my grandmothers first cousin still living! She was 100, and she had given an address of where to send cards. So while jumping up and down for joy I was scrounging for the appropriate card and a few old pictures I wanted to include. Then of course I could only wait about 4 days after I sent the card before I called the daughter that was listed in the article. She seemed very nice, and as I was telling her that I do family History, I was waiting for the sigh and the Oh very interesting! response, when what I got was the OH really, so do I!!!! I was in shock. And to make things better, she was willing to share and had so much information I was flabbergasted. Thanks again to my Angel, Brenda!!! But this is not the end. In the info from the newfound cousin was a reference to a Mysterious death, so I thought Why not ask Brenda for some help to see if it was in the paper. Once again, she went above and beyond the call of duty and copied by hand a very lengthy and grisly tale of possible murder.
Here’s To Brenda, My very own Angel!!!!
I want to give a big public thank you to Mary in Southern California for the extra effort that she went to, to find and photograph my mom's grave. The name of the cemetary had changed, she was not listed in the graves in the older part of the cemetary, and the grave was sinking. Mary found her grave, had it added to the list on the computer site, had the grave cleaned, and asked to have the sinking corrected. I am VERY grateful to her for all her hard work. Thank you again Mary. Ingrid

I am very grateful to a special resident of Grimsby, Ontario who very graciously spent hours of her precious time ( she has a small child) at the St. Andrews Churchyard Cemetery taking pictures of the graves of my ancestors. Not only did she do this, but she also went to the church office and copied records. The pictures came with notes describing the gravestones and where they were and everything. She also took pictures of the cemetery from all angles and beautiful pictures of the old church . I was thrilled since I live in Florida and will probably never see this cemetery myself. I have many ancestors buried there.
Sylvia Droughn deserves my praise and thanks for all that she did for a stranger. She must be one very SPECIAL person.
You can see some of the pictures on my website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familiesforever/sta...

DORIS GEIGER IN CALHOUN CTY MICHIGAN

I would like to acknowledge and praise Doris for the great services she has done for me. Originally Doris took gravestone photos for me in DuBois Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI for my 3rd great grandfather, Pollodore Hudson, first postmaster in Battle Creek, his wife, Harriet Morehouse Hudson, daughter Sarah P. Hudson, sons Bradley P. Hudson and Andrew D. Hudson. Interesting that Harriet, Sarah and Bradley died in the same year (1853). Recently I learned that another son of Pollodore's, Hiram B. Hudson, donated the post office box that was used by Pollodore and it is on display at the Kimball House Historical Museum. I emailed the Kimball House to find out if in fact the relic was still on display and what days and hours the museum was open. Not getting a reply, Doris volunteered to call the museum for me only to get a recording to leave a message. Not getting a call back from her message, Doris pursued and finally got a phone number and was able to talk to a live person. Doris learned that the museum is only open on Friday afternoons. Doris hurried down to the museum, took photos of the relic, email them to me the same day and said she would get the originals in the mail to me the next day. I offered to reimburse Doris for her time and expenses...she asked only for postage stamps that she can use to mail others her research. What a gal! I really found a gem thanks to RAOGK. Big thank you again Doris!

Barb very diligently searched through microfilm of a local newspaper for obituaries and other items on one particular branch. It's the most well documented branch of them all. And, she continues to send me items as she finds them, even though she is not a member of the family.

Volunteers like Barb Huff make genealogy fun! I wish I could clone her for EVERY genealogy website!

When Elaine and I took over the Upshur County TXGenWeb
site in June of 2001, it didn't have much on it.
But thanks to a lot of folks, NOT necessarily registered volunteers, within a month or so, the site was beginning to shape up. as we received pictures, cemetery readings, school
pictures (classes), bios, and just everything else that could
possibly be used on a genealogical site........we were amazed.
We couldn't even begin to list all the wonderful people that began to send in information.........
There was such a tremendous response, that 7 months later
in January 2002, Upshur County was voted County of the Month for the state of TX...........
And the information is still coming in.

Volunteers are wonderful.

Lora Radiches, lora1957@aol.com, is an especially helpful researcher. She is always posting lists of births, deaths and marriages to the INRUSH and INShelby rootsweb lists. Furthermore, she does many individual lookups among her vast personal acquisitions of resources.

Many of us are deeply indebted to her hours of painstaking postings!

I have rarely felt warm fuzzies for a group I have tried to be part of. Free RootsWeb has allowed me to contribute my gedcom and become something greater than myself. And of course that is possible because of the good-natured giving that volunteers do. Many thanks, JP Smith.

I have experienced few volunteers with the dedication, committment and energy shown by BRENDA CHOATE relative (no pun intended!) to her Garvin County, Oklahoma
website. She keeps it updated regularly and helps a multitude of those researching on her site. If monetary value was placed and given to her for her work she'd be on top of Forbe's list of billionaires. Special THANKS! and many kudos to Brenda and also to KIM DAVIS who has been a tremendous help to me and others searching for our family.

It is unbelievably frustrating to try to find answers when you are far from the best and possibly only sources of information. I am truly amazed at the generosity of complete strangers. Many have helped me out but Lorraine P. and Christine C. of Sydney went way past just helping. I thank them for their time which is a valuable commodity for all of us.
Cathie Locke

I'd like to post a thank you to the volunteers in Ontario, Canada who helped me take down many brick walls in my Killey family research. Their help was invaluable, and without the kind woman (who did research in between preparations for her own wedding) who sent me so much information, I'd still be pounding my head on that wall. Then there was the kind person who looked up cemetery information for me, and countless others. To the Ontario, Essex County site volunteers: Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! And many thanks to you.

They work so hard to make stuff available, are so helpful to the neophyte and technologically challenged and I will never be able to keep up with the amount of stuff available just to my line. Yet I feel beholden to those who make stuff available to help others find what they want.

Cathy Gowdy changed our lives.!!!!!!!!!!

After the death of our mother, my three sisters and I were told that we had two more siblings. A boy and girl from another marriage. The relative who told us thought the girl had died as a child but believed the boy was living somewhere in the western states. For the past two years I have been looking for this brother. I had tried the SSDI but no listing, I was told about the California Death Index, and found him listed there. He was only 16 years old. How does a 16 year old die? I posted a message for an obituary lookup on Feb.27, 2002. Cathy Gowdy was kind enough to post the newspaper articale the next day. He had been killed in a motorcycle accident. Listed in the obituary was a sister. The girl was still alive in 1959. We have since found her and are in contact. Had Cathy not posted this obituary we would have looked no further. Cathy, all FIVE of us would like to express our most sincere gratitude.

I found about Deanna on a web site for free look ups. I was very frustrated that night as I had lost contact with the one & only relative I had discovered. I wasn't getting any place and I was new & didn't know what to do. Deanna helped me by finding out about who my husbands grandfather, great grandfather were. I was then able to find another relative-Gary who had researched all the way back to the 1600's. Deanna was than able to help me verify all his research and to add a lot to it. She made my husbands family come "alive" for us. She even discovered that my husbands family was related to hers by marriage.

Thanks so very much Deanna! Without you I would still be back to just knowing only my husbands dad's name.

A Big Thank You to All Volunteers

I want to thank all volunteers who help people that come their way on a daily basis.

I want to thank every site that contains free genealogical and historical content in hopes that it helps somebody fill in the missing pieces.

I wish to thank even those people that we do not think of as volunteers. They are the ones that you asked a question and they sent you their ideas on what you might look for or sent helpful links to other sites. The referred you to someone else that might have the answers. They are the ones that went out of their way to help you even if they didn't have the information that you were looking for.

I want to thank Rootsweb and USGenWeb for providing the avenues for Free Genealogical and Historical Content. For the Freepages and WorldConnect project that host my genealogy and history information. For the free space that hosts the 2 county sites I coordinate in USGenWeb.

To All the volunteers that work behind the scenes. These are the many people that keep Rootsweb and USGenWeb going that we don't know exist.

Last but not least, I want to thank my father. If it were not for him I would not be posting this. He is the one that has provided me with a working pc since 1999, with the last pc upgrades made recently. Bought my genealogy programs, gave me money to research out of town or go to a family reunion. Paid the AOL bill when I couldn't. He is the one that you should thank if I have ever helped you.

Sincerely,
Renee Smelley

I found Darleen's name posted as a look-up volunteer for some of the cemetery listings in a couple of counties in Iowa. I contacted her and requested her assistance in checking for a few of my "missing" ancestors. To my surprise, she not only checked - and found - several of my ancestors in the cemetery listings she had access to, but Darleen also did some checking on these names in censuses, books, etc. Thanks to Darleen, my family information has grown by leaps and bounds. What a wonderful lady!!!

Kathy was a huge help in locating a gg uncle in Rockford, IL. I had been searching for three years, asking everyone in the family, looking for old papers, contacting the NARA, etc., and no one could find what I was looking for.
GG Uncle Willie was buried in Rockford's Greenwood cemetery, three blocks from Kathy's home, in the same section as Kathy's great grandfather. Buried the same day but 11 years apart. Serendipity!! She also discovered that there were
Three William Wildts and I didn't know that either!
Thank you so Much, Kathy!!
Kudos to some special volunteers

I am so grateful to:

Karen Isaacson and Dr. Brian Leverich, founders of RootsWeb, and their helpers. They gave so generously of their time and finances to make RootsWeb the BEST genealogy site, FREE to all.

Walt Stock, who hosted the Philadelphia Co. pages of PAGenWeb; administered the PHILLY-ROOTS mailing list on RootsWeb; has given several free genealogy and computing workshops; was vice-president and then president of the Genealogical Computing Association of Pennsylvania (GenCAP) and chairman of its successor, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania's Technology Special Interest Group (GSP-TechSIG); and a vice-president of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (GSP); all this while also being a full-time staff member at the Free Library of Philadelphia, where he assisted many family genealogists with their research.

Lynn Jefferies, from whom I've learned so much about early Philadelphia, PA, and its institutions through her postings to the PHILLY-ROOTS mailing list on RootsWeb and personal correspondence. Her knowledge, generosity and thoroughness are amazing and set a fine example for all to follow.

The volunteers of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (GSP) who have created indices, abstracts and transcriptions of so many records. Their efforts and diligence in creating invaluable resources and aids have benefited so many.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) for creating microforms of primary and secondary records from around the world, and their members for volunteering to staff Family History Centers (FHCs) so that we can easily access those records.

USGenWeb, Books We Own (BWO) and Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness and all the contributors who voluntarily give of their time, data and expertise.

"Thank you" to you and the thousands of others who give so freely, kindly and generously to help us all!

Lani

Thank you so much for your continuous help and enthusiasm. The pieces of our family have fallen into place because of your desire to help others find their ancestors. The extras, IE. newspaper clippings, vital records etc, that you include are very valuable to us as members of this family.

Appreciation for Richland Co, OH's Website Volunteer

Amy Johnson, who took over the Richland Co GenWeb site (hosted by RootsWeb) a little less than a year ago, has worked wonders!!

I think I have said this to Amy, and I will say it again to anyone who wants to listen: although I was reticent at first, I have since had a much broader experience of GenWeb sites (as my research has expanded), and the RCO site remains, of all I have visited, among if not the best of them all.

There oughta be an award for these, because Amy deserves it. Her instinct about what is useful and needful has clearly been honed by her own research, and she has, by her example and enthusiasm, provoked so many others to format and share info that they had and didn't know how to share, or even if it was worth it, that the RCO GenWeb site is not, like so many other GenWeb sites, a helpful, but essentially circular "directory" (like redoing "Cyndi's List" on a local basis), but a genuinely useful (sometimes even provocative) source of real genealogical material. Exactly the sort of thing that amateur, know-nothing family wannabee historians like me can thrive on!

Man, I still remember ( and have on file [as per the following copies] my early comments to Amy:
"It's now "prettier"; not sure it's more useful." (31/8/01)
"What did I miss?...I found the new site to be different, awkward to navigate (since I was accustomed to a different format), but "not useful"? I think I said "not MORE useful"." (31/8/01)
"Over the past month you have really proven me wrong, wrong, wrong!!! Not only is the Website "prettier" (and it is, you know!), it IS more useful. FAR MORE USEFUL than it has ever been. And you seem to have stimulated a lot of input." (3/10/01)

If Ohio had 52 Amys and each US state had the same, we'd put the Mormon Tabernacle archives to shame!!

Thanks, Amy

(and thanks, too, to RootsWeb for making this so easy!)

Jim Boyce
Geneva, Switzerland

You opened doors to history

The service you volunteers have performed is priceless. You have opened doors to show us who and where our ancestors were, what sort of lives they led, and helped us to know who we are, the descendants of the humble or the mighty, the shapers of history in ways both large and small.

"Thank you" is a small term indeed, for the huge body of work you've donated, but our language does not provide a better term.
