Cemetary Lists/transcriptions

Hi, I have a few hundred photos from cemetaries in my area of headstones and others of just views of the whole cemetary.
Suggestions for the best way to use a free Rootsweb account for listing these would be appreciated. Should I use an online photo album or maybe transcribe the photos to a text listing using "Excel". It would be easier for me if there was a programme available to use for either the photos or the text listing but I haven't actually come across one yet.
Hugh Wallis's IGIBatchNumbers lookup pages

Does anyone know what has happened to this invaluable resource, still listed in a search of the RootsWeb site but apparently no longer available at the URL freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/ (which now seems to be forwarded to freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com) ?

I regularly use these to check which records (if any) for a particular parish can be found on the IGI, and know of no alternative. It would be a great shame to lose all the research Hugh and his colleagues did to compile this information.

Mike

Excess Data being uploaded

I am using a program called My Heritage Family Tree Builder to create a GEDCOM file of my family tree. Upon uplodaing the file I found that a series of numbers and letters are displayed on the rootsweb page that I don't want there. How do I delete this excess data?

This is a sample of what it looks like on the page:
Birth:
_UID: A2E84ADC-3D7B-41E1-A3F5-C1C7375B4592
RIN: MH:IF137 ABT 1843
Death:
_UID: 988E2739-6FC1-4D92-9718-C87A4D10F40C
RIN: MH:IF138 1903
RIN: MH:I69
_UID: E781CC53-CF36-4454-B517-1C801ADBD899

Thanks,
A Robison
Problem uploading to website

Since I am not a member of the RootsWeb Help mailing list, I am putting this message on the board. Two things, I want to thank Pat Asher for the answer and let others know the problem and what solved it.

I have a web site on homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and the other day was the first time I had tried to upload anything since the URL changed to include Ancestry. I use WS_FTP95 LE for uploading.

It has always worked just fine before, but this time it didn't.

At first there was a message:
"150 Here comes the directory"

After a while the message changed to:
"accept: Blocking call cancelled.
DoDirList: returned 0"

The frame that should have included the "Public HTML" folder was blank.

The solution that Pat Asher gave was:
On the first screen when I opened WS_FTP95 LE, I clicked on the "advanced" button, which opened "Advanced Profile Parameters". I checked the box next to "Passive Transfers", clicked OK to go back to the previous screen and clicked "Save".

Now everything is working just find.

So thank you again, Pat.
Suggestions

Well, on the Help Page, it says to use this Board for "suggestions" for Freepages Accounts.

1. I thought the Guestbooks were now more protected from spam. It doesn't seem like there is any more protections in place though.

2. After removing a Guestbook entry, the page informs the user the items have been deleted. It would be NICE however if there was a "Go Back" link, to go right back into the Edit page of the same guestbook. Instead... gotta sign back in all over again!

Judy

Question about adding link to freepage

I've almost got my family tree website done. I know how to do the hyerlink and all of that. I'm using microsoft frontpage to create my website and now I'm trying to add a section of my favorite websites for genealogy. I've typed the the title of the site and tried to do a hyerlink and can not. I'm also trying to do that with my online family tree that I have on ancestry.com and I can't do that either. Can someone give me some advice on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you.
Jamie

Garbled Freepages webpage

HELP!
I constructed my page with MS Outlook 2007 a while back and it's been totally fine, up until last night.
I am using Coffee Cup Free FTP for uploading to the rootsweb host. Thinking that software was wreaking havoc, I also tried using the program SmartFTP, and had nearly the same results.

I updated the page last night (added more pictures and text), and have uploaded my page several times overnight and today; both the index.html file and all the photos. The "index.html" file went into the main "genealogy" directory folder, and all the image files went into a subfolder that says "index_files."

I thought maybe the images needed to be in the main "genealogy" folder, so I uploaded them into that folder as well. It didn't fix the problem. All images in the "index_files" folder are numbered (EX: image001.jpg), there are no personal names. Do I have to upload the pictures with names as well maybe? For instance - if image001.jpg is actually called jonipicture.jpg, do I need to have both in the folder at the FTP space? If so, what folder do they need to be in? The main "genealogy" folder with the "index.html" file or in the "index_files" folder with all the other images??

Here is my page link - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joni4ta/

My webpage keeps coming up visibly wrong in my online browser (Internet Explorer 7), with photos showing up in places they don't belong. For instance, if you go to my page and look on the right side about 3 mouse wheel turns down, you see where it says "Document proving parents of Francesco Capuano and Rosa Giallombardo, Click the picture." That picture is supposed to be of a small document that links to a larger one I have in full size at flickr.com (just like the other two documents to its left). Instead the picture is of my father, myself and mother - which is supposed to be further down on the page!! And there are several instances of this kind of error - pictures in the wrong spot, throughout the page. However, when I open the "index.html" file that's on my local machine into my browser, everything looks totally perfect. Same when I open the local file in MS Outlook 2007.

I have deleted all files off the rootsweb server and re-uploaded every single one of them SEVERAL times, and no two times does the page ever look exactly the same! Pictures are in the wrong places throughout the document. I do not know what I am doing wrong. As far as I can tell I have not changed my upload process from the times I have uploaded the webpage and successfully done updates on it in the past.

Suggestions anyone???

Thank you very much!
Joni
If it's easier to email me directly, you may do so at joni4ta[at]yahoo.com
The name of the church is St. Michael the Archangel, where undoubtedly our ancestors were parishioners; were baptized, received Holy Communion, Confirmation and were married, etc. The church was built in the 18th century, as the town was formed."

And under that paragraph are two photos that are NOT the church!!!! The funny thing is, these same two photos are further down the page in their rightful place under the WANN surname heading.

WTH is going on here!?!?!?!?!?!

Freepages - many problems....so confused....

I have been experiencing multiple problems when working on my Freepages site, and I use Mozilla Firefox 5.0. I am wondering if this browser is not causing some problems. I have tried using Internet Explorer, but it is so slow it does not even load. I use Windows XP. My problems:

1) In using the WYSIWYG editor, it randomly decides to not give me any "save" buttons below the editing box. There is nothing more to scroll down to past the bottom of the editing box. Can't work on my page if I can't save it!

2) In using the WYSIWYG editor, it randomly decides load my text in HTML and not give me a toolbar at the top of my editing box. In contacting the helpdesk, they tell me that there is a toggle switch to turn off HTML. This is NOT the problem, as I am not getting ANY toolbar with any buttons!

3) When I want to insert a picture or a web link (using WYSIWYG), it won't allow me to go in and insert the link normally. If there is a cursor blinking in the URL field, and I insert the address, it won't insert it into my webpage. I won't even be able to cancel out of that window, I have to use the "X" at the top right of the box. I will have to continue saving my page over and over until that cursor disappears. I then try to insert the text (which I know I can't, as it won't allow me to enter text in the URL field), a box will come up telling me I have to enter the URL, and only then will I be able to enter the address into the URL location and it will post into my page. Confusing? Annoying? YES!

So...what am I doing wrong, what settings do I need to change to make it so I can work on my web page normally??? Help!

If there's a listing of all the "commands" possible I missed it but I would think it must be possible to use more that one "To" command or possibly a "CC" command for the email header?

I scanned and saved pictures for my freepages account using PSP-5. My computer crashed and I lost the descriptions I had attached to each photo. The pictures were saved on CD's, so they're OK. When I go back and re-enter the descriptions in PSP-5 again, is there a way to save the descriptions & pictures together somehow? I'm sorry if this shouldn't be posted here, but cannot find the answer elsewhere. Hoped the PSP users here can help.

Thanks very much,

Mary

Collaborative genealogical projects using Wiki on Freepages

A fellow researcher and I are collaborating on a genealogical project, and we would like to open the project up soon to collaboration with other researchers. A Wiki would be ideal, but it doesn't appear that Freepages are equipped to handle a Wiki because of the lack of database access (MySQL in the case of Media Wiki http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki).

Does RootsWeb have plans to support collaborative Wiki-enabled freepages soon? If so, could we go to the front of the line with our project?

In case it's pertinent, we are creating a Pre-1830 census for Henry County, Alabama. The county's 1820 census was destroyed. The county was formed in 1819, and the Pre-1830 era is very important to those of us whose ancestors migrated there before 1830. We expect the Wiki to have a maximum of 600 Wiki pages.

Jim Chumney

Question about adding word documents to webpages....

I have tried using the WYSIWYG but I'm still having some trouble with it. So I decided to create my background, pictures, etc with microsoft word. I've got my background like I want it, I have my clipart pics where I want them and my headings placed. I got my lines, banners, and buttons all lined up and my paragraph writing about my family tree. Everything seems done, I have saved it in doc. format to make sure I don't lose anything but I have noticed you can save the word document as: word doc, XML doc, single file web page, web page, web page, filtered or document template. I tried saving it as a web page then adding it to the WYSIWYG program and all that came up was the lettering, no pictures. I tried saving it in the document or ways so I could transfer it to my free webpage like it was in the microsoft word document but I couldn't do it. I think there is a way but I must be missing something. Can somebody lead me in the right direction?

One other thing, I made a background with paint shop pro 7 in a file size of 1280 x 1024 and saved it in jpg and then opened it up in WYSIWYG and saved it in html. I sent the file to the free webpage and open the file in there in the WYSIWYG and the background was not fully covered like it was with the PSP 7 program, there was a small white line all around the background. I can't figure out how to fix that either. I know how to get the plian background but I was wanting something with a little texture to it.

Thanks for any help with this.

Jamie

scans & webpage width

Before requesting a Freepages account, we hope to find out if/how this project can be done.

How wide can our webpages actually be? Has anyone else scanned an old school newspaper to put on the web -- and viewers can actually read the wording? If so, can you please share some tips?

We plan to make one scan of the top of the original newspaper page "above the fold" and make a 2nd scan of the bottom half. Width of the (legible) image online is the question. Surely the scans will be wider on the right than the Freepages banners. Yet, if they're narrower, cannot be read. Does it matter if the scans are wider than the banners?

Physical size: Each original newspaper section we would scan is 12 inches width by 9 inches height. Original full page is 18 inches height, but most are torn in half across at the fold line.

Thanks very much for any help.

I am updating my pages which I have not done in almost a year. I can log on and most of my changes are made. When the changes are finished loading, I get the message 550 Permission denied. All of the text changes uploaded and the links work. Many, but not all, of my new pictures have not uploaded. I have tried deleting the pictures and reinserting them, but that does not work. I have disabled my virus checker and my firewall. What else should I try?

Two of the pictures not uploading can be found at the bottom of this page.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bryanquinn/Quinn-Wi...

I am new at making webpages so please be patient with me.I have a 2 part question.

I have started my webpage for my mailing list and I created a guestbook for it. Well I forgot to make a subdirectory for it and it is in the list for my index. Is there a way to move it to a subdirectory? I have looked around the help pages and in here searched but I don't think I am searching right.

My second question is, I have tried to upload a couple of .jpg photos but when I am in the directory where I want them to go and click upload it comes back with an error message and I have to sign back in again. Could some kind soul tell me what I am doing wrong? The error message is Can't open file : No such file or directory.

Sincerely,
Valeria

Yearbook pics size on Freepages

Need advice on sizes when scanning and putting high school yearbook photo's on a webpage. These are the small black and white individual pictures of graduates in a 1950-era yearbook.

We scanned each photo in "greyscale" for "web-viewing" and each picture comes out to be abt 30K. Photo sizes are all about 164 x 186 pixels.

As a trial to see how they looked with some shading, we also scanned some of these pictures in color even though the pictures are black and white. Those were about 90K each.

We have about 200 pictures total just like this. Thought of putting 5 pictures in a row with maybe 3 or 4 rows per page.

Will try for a simple table to put them in.

Just not sure if we are supposed to compress each photo and just how many K is generally acceptable per photo.

Thanks very much for suggestions.

Mary

Looks depend on the Browser?

I'm new to webpage development... using an older FrontPage 2002... keeping it very simple, using the "drag and drop web publishing"... which couldn't be easier. ie...

http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~pasher/dragndrop.ht...

But my webpages look different when I look at them with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Pictures positioned differently... Even bodies of text with a different font size and different spacing between lines. And, sometimes the Rootsweb leading and trailing banners appear in or over some of my text.

Do I need an newer "FrontPage"?

Is there some other reference material available that might help me develop webpages that are more consistent across different browsers?

Thanks, Gaylan Wallis

my website under construction is...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elks/
Basic Questions... Counters, Ads, etc.

Hello!

My web pages are almost done, but I don't have a freepages account yet -- I'm trying to get it all under control! Right now, my questions are....

Counters:
Is it possible to use counters from another site (such as SiteMeter), or are only RootsWeb counters allowed?

Can a RootsWeb counter be placed on more than the "home" page?

Ads:
I've been looking at how other freepages sites are set up and came across one that has Google ads on it. Are Google ads allowed?

I thought no ads were allowed, except for RootsWeb or Ancestry sites -- so, for example, would an affiliate link to Ancestry be OK?

MailMerge:
I would like to have a "feedback" form on my site that sends the info to my email address. I found two places on RootsWeb where MailMerge is explained:

Basics of MailMerge
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/basicmm.html

Using MailMerge on FreePages
http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~elsi/free-mailmerge...

But, I'm still kind of confused. Which one of these would you recommend that I use and/or is there another page that is really simple to understand?

The RootsWeb community is fantastic! I'll really appreciate any assistance with these questions -- which may be the first of many. :)

Thank you!

Wilma
I use SmartFTP to FTP files to freepages, but it seems to be smarter than I am. Specifically it has a "transfer queue" that allows multiple threads and variable KBps per thread. This seems like a good feature...if you could have multiple threads going at high KB per sec, everything would be faster!
But it doesn't work. SmartFTP seems to think everything is uploading furiously, but nothing shows up on Freepages.
Drag N Drop with this program works fine. so basic connection settings are OK. Does Freepages not allow this sort of thing?
Jonathan

HTML problem - extra ancestry search form at top of page

Help! I recently made some formatting changes to my freepages homepage and now, for some reason I cannot fathom, there are TWO (2) of the forms at the top of my page that say "Discover Interesting facts about your family".

These appear in either IE or Mozilla. Can anyone help me?

When I was editing the HTML page, I had tried adding a graphic background but couldn't make it work so I went into the page source and deleted the <body background=...> line. I am afraid I inadvertently edited out something that was supposed to be there.

Any help would be appreciated!
:)
Margaret

Hi, I have spent almost the whole day trying to get my webpage up and running but I just cant seem to get my family tree onto the page, it just sits in the file manager area...I have waded through the help section but still cant figure out what to do...I have ended up going around in circles. Am I supposed to put my family tree somewhere else on the internet and provide a link to it? I know I must sound thick but it just seems to be beyond me...as far as I know my files uploaded just fine, but now I dont know how to move them onto the page.

How to Retrieve Guestbook Entries

I put a Rootsweb Guestbook on my site and perhaps I did something wrong. I am not sure how to access the entries. All it shows on my site is the blank boxes for the person to enter their name and email and the box for their comments and then the place to click to submit. I did two test messages but the only way I see them is after I click on submit and it redirects me to Rootsweb. There, I see the two test messages but not on my site. Do I have to go to Rootsweb to see them? Also, if I get any inappropriate ads or messages how can I delete them?
Thanks for the help!
Rarely a day goes by where I don't have to log in and delete one or more messages out of my guestbook trying to sell me something. I know others are having the same problem. This could be done in a few lines of code and would save on server resources as we wouldn't have to keep logging in to delete the garbage.

Hi,

I'm searching for a solution with my guestbook - this one isn't the pre-fabricated one but one I did myself using the mail merge options. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brandlsurname/guest...

The guestbook is increasingly being flooded with advertisements, mainly for hotels I believe (I have never tried one of the links since I can't trust them...)

Sofar I have that page registered with ChangeDetection.com and whenever I get a notification I just go there and delete that scrap, at least once a week, often even twice. I'm pondering over whether I shall disconnect it from the guest-book entry page. Doesn't make too much sense anymore.

Has anybody of you similar experiences and maybe an idea on how to handle this?

Thanks
Tilman

I am totally lost! Please bear with me as I am nearly 80(I didn't think I was senile but this has changed my mind.)
I have a Free Page website provided.
I have gone through editor.
Now I want to do all the goodies.Surnames, information etc.
It seems to me I need to get a program to even start doing this. I downloaded a WYSIWYG free program but what do I do with it? Why can't I just start writing?
When I want to start lists(surname, etc) How do I do that?
I know this is all explained on the FreePages Help but I don't understand a word of it.
Would someone spend the time with me and start me with step # 1 and then to step # 2 ad nauseum?
Believe it or not I went to college(in the dark ages I know but
I admit this has got me stumped.
E-mail should be:xb2_xje not as above.
Color of links on my homepage

On my freepages website I have one color (sometimes two colors) of fonts for the regular text. For the links, they are a different color. It is also set up to display a different color of font to show what links have already been clicked. When I go to my homepage (index page) sometimes the links are the "previously looked at" color - the pages I've looked at directly from the web, not my html editor. My question is: when/how often is the freepages server re-set or refreshed? Sometimes the "clicked-on" links revert back to the original color and sometimes they keep the "clicked-on" color for a long time. Can someone explain why this happens? And is there a way I can view my own page from the web without the "clicked-on" font colors after I've clicked on them with my own computer?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilypages/famil...

FTP'ing with Net Object Fusion?

I am new to Freepages and trying to find my way around. I note that many methods of FTP'ing are discussed and supported so I figured my web softwares FTP capability should work as well (if front page works, anything should work! ;-)

However, I am not able to get the fields just right for some reason. Anyone else out there use NOF?

I can publish locally and I guess use WS_FTP to move the files but that seems like one step too many.

Any advise appreciated.

My webpage is not showing on the Rootsweb freepages index where I would like.

I created the pages in Word2000. I named the file James Wilson Nichols. So it is showing in the "J" index.

I was told to edit the html TITLE tags. I guess it shows... but I am very new to this.

My question to anyone useing Word2000... how do I edit the html title tag?

I did go back and change the "James Wilson Nichols" on the TOC frame to "Nichols families" but it did not change in the Rootsweb Index listings. Does it take a while to change there or do I need to do something else?

Thanks
Billie Nichols Bennett

updated file will not show update information. Only original page

I have a webpage in Word 2000.

I loaded a copy before completely doing all the pages, with just the index to click to the pages. On the page it showed what was supposed to be there.

I now did the page, loaded it with the ftp drag/drop.

The icon on the ftp location... if clicked on shows the new page. But when I open the website only the old page shows.

On the directory listing page, when I click on the file, it shows the old version before I built the page.

On the ftp upload page it shows the new.
On the directory page it shows the old.

Can anyone help me here... I am new at this and have exhausted all I know to do.

Thanks,
Billie

I'm getting so frustrated I'm ready to give up again. I went and bought Web Easy 5 Professional and built my web page on it, when i go to publish the page online it wants the host name or ips address. i typed in ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.com/genealogy_html, then i typed in my user name and password. it tells me "unable to resolve host name".
i wish this all didn't have to be so difficult. can you help me?

problem with password to login to use ftp

Long story short (haha)...I have been using an FTP program for uploading my pages for several years. Did the "usual" thing and had the password "save" so I wouldn't have to type it in all the time. Three weeks ago, my faithful computer gave out on me...couldn't save a thing unfortunately, including my best programs (thank goodness I always did backup for my files!). So anyway...I have a brand new shiny computer. But here I sit, having typed in my username (using my browser FTP now), and drew a complete blank on the password. *GROAN* Looked through all my papers and emails I had saved and couldn't find it anywhere. Is there anyone I can contact at RootsWeb who might be able to send me that password, or a new one? Already tried all the usual routes, including Password Central, but the email address I used long ago to get my freepages account is long gone, etc., etc.

Thanks so much!

Diana

PHP & MySQL

Do the freepages @ rootsweb support PHP and MySQL? It's come to my attention that a much easier way to create genealogy websites that involve a large amount of ancestors has been created. The software is called The Next Generation (TNG), and it's website is here:

http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Is there any easy way to upload files created with ged2html onto my freepages? The documentation that comes with the program suggests using an archiver, and that I must have access to an unpacker on the server.

I'm sure someone out there can tell me how to do this.

Thank you.
