There appears to be some misunderstandings in this matter. RootsWeb.com is still free. It was purchased by Ancestry.com (MyFamily.com) more than 12 years ago -- in June of 2000. For many years there was access to the Social Security Death Index databases on both RootsWeb and Ancestry. That has been changed and only Ancestry has this database now.
However, there are many free databases on RootsWeb, plus all of the mailing lists and message boards are free.

Search for your family information here:
http://searches.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
Explore the Search Thingy option, the MetaSearch and the User-contributed records/databases.
There is a surprising amount of material that's available.

You can edit an old family tree which you posted at WorldConnect, by creating a new GEDCOM of it and upload the revised GEDCOM to your WorldConnect account.
It will over-ride the old tree. You also can create multiple trees (you'll need different "accounts" to do that, but they are free).
