Help --- I need to delete a profile

I'm pretty new to ancestory.com and am officially "hooked" on geneology. I'm having trouble trying to delete a profile from my Roney tree as it is a duplicate. Can anyone offer any advice on what I need to do?

I would be pleased if I can find out where I am going wrong. I have entered all the family. Then gone back to Tree Summary -People with hints, Then added these hints to the family, only to find that I have created an (Unknown Spouse)in the family. And if I click on a child in the family it's showing Half Siblings at the top of the rest of the children.

The database search field (on the home page) should ignore trailing spaces. At present, it does not, producing a "does not exist" error message.

Trailing spaces are easily picked up if copied from another source and pasted in, where they may be easily overlooked.

New users find WorldConnect difficult to understand

I regularly point people to the index page of my database on WorldConnect ( http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=ancestors... ), but several have come back to me unable to understand how to find data within it. A message received to day is typical.

"I don't know how to view your tree on rootsweb's I did try but I couldn't find out how to look at it. If you can explain how I can see your tree I would really appreciate it. Thank you."

I suspect the problem comes when just a surname is entered into the search box. The result is just that name with a figure in brackets after it. There is no instruction to click on that name to get a list of all the individuals who have that surname.

Can a bit more text with instructions be added to the page?

If this title were changed to spouse, it would help to keep from misreading the following information as a marriage date, when it really is birth, or death etc. Spouse would be more descriptive and less prone to errors.
Why would someone Submit my fam. outline - Incorrectly.

Hello fellow rootsweb persons:

Just wanted to share breifly the woes of sharing your
FAMILY TREE ( your hard work) with other genealogy
people. ( I have mainly run into great people involved
in the hobby of genealogy).

On this website, the information I emailed ( a few
years ago) to a lady was a quality outline - something that didn't at all need tweeking.
But low and behold I see the lady I emailed is a
rootsweb contributor and splashed my family tree outline
( the one I emailed to her - NOT an outline she put together herself) on the World connect webpage.
I guess its not extremly terrible - I didn't have
living persons listed. Just imagine if I did.
My aggravation is that I see my family tree online
at ROOTSWEB.COM and I wasn't the Contributor of it -
this other lady was. That seems creepy.
I have contacted the Contributor to ask her to make
ONE correction to the Online family Tree - the one
she POSTED. But nothing has happened. I have been polite
about it. The Correction DOES make a difference.
I know some things about a Family Tree doesn't really
matter if they are incorrect or off.
But the type of correction I requested DOES matter. She has it strangely wrong.
And believe me it is Strange how this person twisted my Family Tree and made it in a way that was never meant to be. ( wrongfully tweeked information )
It is really creepy. My polite request(s) for her to make ONE significant correction is ignored.

Just wanted to tell others the woes of sharing
your family tree. Because over zealous people can tweek it in a way that makes you aggravated and Post it on Rootsweb.com.
This sort of thing just about deters me from genealogy.

I tried in vain to let you know I did not want the 2007 one you insisted I have. It turned out to be incorrect content (just as I thought). I wanted ONLY descendants of the CAMERONS. The one you allowed was the early one before I had new info. I tried VERY HARD NOT to have that, but WC insisted and would NOT accept my NEW info. I have had to cancel.
I shall try once more.
Delphine Large

Trial pages off line?

I have a free family history database program (Family History .paf) with which I am very happy.

My next step is to try and generate the information in web page format (like on rootsweb). I especially like this format - The font; the layout; the link default colours etc. are all perfect! not to mention the index; pedigree; ancestor list etc. (I may be wrong but the same format seems to be used for all trees and I imagine the rootsweb software generates it automatically).

My first question is this - is the rootsweb software available to generate web pages "off-line" as it were. The webpage format is a helpful way of arranging material - including that which is still to be verified - but I can't seem to find how you might generate web pages "off-line" and use rootsweb a 'working tool' before it is published publically. What software does rootsweb use? Is it available to make web pages outside the rootsweb site? If not what is the closest equivalent of a program that generates web-pages from your databases?

My second question is this - nice as the apparently automatically generated pages are, is there scope for adding the odd personal link on a web page?
In my software, Family Tree Maker version 16, I list AKA. My downloaded gedcom file shows it on the individual's page under ALIA. But when I do a global search it doesn't show, only shows as a surname. My example is: AKA: Doc - the search only shows as the surname Doc. (database Teters3 name is Uel F. Roberts). How do I get this to show under searches for Doc Roberts?
Thank you,
Sherri
I am seeking some help from some of you who have had their trees up for a while. First names of my living individuals are displayed. I used Family Tree Maker to create a gedcom file. When posting to Rootsweb I have tried both the "clean" and "remove" options with the default 1930 cutoff date. I have no entries of any sort in the death date or place fields in FTM. Interestingly, birth dates for living are not shown, but first names are. I would sure appreciate any suggestions for a fix.

Putting Information on line

I just found when I did a search that someone has on line that my mother in law and father in law are cousins. This could not be further from the truth. I wish before people put information on line they would pay attention to what they are posting. If you haven't done the resarch yourself and know something to be a fact your work is basically useless. Please think about what you are posting and go over it before you just send in something that you have no idea whether or not it is correct. When people post something they got from someone else who got it from someone else it is irresponsible and defeats the purpose of actually finding out what is correct. As for the post-it- notes if I send 10 I am lucky if one person responds to find out if I know what I'm talking about. I understand we all make mistakes doing genealogy but we could certainly avoid a lot of them if we verified information before posting it all over the internet.
Donna Wright

Unusual message following upload

I uploaded a revised version of my main WorldConnect file this morning, went to check it a bit later and was perplexed to find that the additions that I expected to be there weren't showing up. I checked the GEDCOM file on my memory stick and it was the one I created last night with new data, so I logged in again and once more uploaded my file. This time I got a message I don't recall seeing before:

Upload complete. Saving files...
'Behra 2008.ged' already exist!
Renaming to 'Behra 20081.ged'.
'Behra 20081.ged' was saved successfully.
Transfer complete!

This time it did work -- additions all present. Question: why didn't the first upload (which the system apparently registered, given the message above) take?

Suggested Feature: search databases for two "unrelated" names

IT'd be great if we were able to do a search as follows:

Find Database that has
A- John Doe (1900-1940)
B- John Smith (1500-1560) his probably 8th g-grandfather

These two people are related, just not husband/wife/kids

This would make it easier for people to identify researchers who have both individuals in their database and may have found the linking ancestors

Formatting Question Regarding Notes in Family Trees

Is there any way to make the formatting in the notes sections on one's family tree on rootsweb match the formatting from the genealogy program that the gedcom was derived from? When I'm in my genealogy program, each note has a line between each note with the source linked to each note. When I see it on my family tree on rootsweb, all the notes have been combined into one paragraph with the sources listed before the note(s) so one can't tell which source is connected to which note.
Anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to fix this?
Any example of this would be on this page:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
The "note" is actually 2 separate notes that show up as 2 completely separate paragraphs in my genealogy program.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon

Christening Dates in Register Reports.

I sometimes ask people to link to my WorldConnect database, as a superior option to copying the data and republishing it elsewhere in a corrupted and subsequently out-of-date form.

However WorldConnect has one small but significant defect, namely christening dates are not shown in Register Reports (and similar).

See for example this report from my database at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&... - this is almost entirely my original research. Most of the individuals shown have no known birthdate, but their christening dates are included in the underlying database. Elsewhere on the web you will find http://www.gravesfa.org/gen736.htm - an old copy of my data at WorldConnect, put there without my permission and with no clue as to where it came from, and now incomplete and uncorrected.

However it has to be admitted that the copy is superior in one respect: the christening dates are visible (even if they look like birthdates).

This improvement has been requested before, and even promised - see eg. these threads:
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p... ,
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/topics.rw.world... and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/topics.rw.world...

Please could this be given some urgency, as (apart from the problem of duplicate data) it is the only significant defect of WorldConnect?

Fake family

Has anyone else noticed that the fake family phenomenon has infiltrated WC? Fake family users create fictional family trees that they use to get traffic (ad revenue) thru their site. http://tinyurl.com/3brlls
I've noticed unfamiliar names in a county that I'm very familiar with. The individuals birthplace is in the county but there is no connection with KNOWN county families, and the individual usually ends up migrating to some possible but unlikely places. So far I haven't noticed the fakes being duplicated by others.
Follow-up on too many trees

Several individuals I know have uploaded their genealogy database many times without replacing the existing one (one person has over 32 trees with virtually the same data; and none have been updated in 3 years!). When doing searches for individuals who happen to be in their data, the information that is retrieved is clogged with the repeated data.

I have emailed a couple of these individuals asking for their help in maintaining the quality of the database by deleting outdated information and even offered to help them find out how to do it; however, neither of the two I have emailed are interested in doing that.

Is there any way to monitor or keep this type of thing from happening? If something isn't done, this database (WorldConnect) will become so clogged that even searching for unique types of data combinations will result in thousands of pages of data that must be waded through as we did the census records in the 1970s!

I solicit responses from others - including anyone who has multiple repeating databases, as to your thoughts on this.

I blithely offered to help a friend delete his several family trees on World Connect & upload one current tree. And demonstrate to our computer genealogy group how to do it.

It recently hit me that most, if not all his trees, are Ancestry World Trees or Online Family Trees & must be deleted thru the Ancestry site using his password etc.

Using search, I found the following excellent explanation in:
RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine Vol. 7, No. 6, 11 February 2004, Circulation: 878,929+ (c) 1998-2004 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/

Things are not so dire as previously tho't: he has 2 Online Family Trees submitted 2001 & 2 so we should follow the procedure for elimination as discussed in this article. Has there been an update for this procedure since 2004?

His 3rd gedcom on World Connect was submitted thru World Connect in 2000 & has only 200 or so individuals. Is he better off deleting the tree entirely & submitting a new tree using the new method or following the "replace tree with new" procedure?
Thank you for your help, Emjay
WorldConnect treats different gedcoms differently?

I recently moved to a Mac and I'm now using a program called iFamily to generate my family tree files, and my GEDCOM for uploading to WorldConnect.

I just reviewed my recently uploaded GEDCOM
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

and specifically, I looked at this record:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

Notice that it swapped the two marriages.
Despite the 1787 date of the SECOND marriage (the first marriage was 1757), it placed the 1787 FIRST.

Why is that?
Why didn't it place the 1757 marriage first?

-- Jillaine
Oddities with WorldConnect last night and this?

While I can do a search in WorldConnect, it appears that ALL of the GEDCOMs are generating the same message when I click on a particular record:

"Database [name] doesn't exist or has not been configured."

This is happening on ALL GEDCOMs I'm trying to access, including my own.

Anyone else having this experience? I tried it in IE and Firefox, both logged in and logged out. Same results.

-- Jillaine
I am considering puttin gmy family tree on Ancestry.com and I have been assured (via live chat) that people who do not have a death date listed will simply appear as living Wilson. However, I have people in the tree from previous centuries that I do not have death dates. Will those people really show up as living? If so is there a generally accepted way of dealing with this? Does the birth and death file allow the circa notation?

Glitch in World Connect?

I just updated my gedcom, and it is showing living people, even though I have checked and double checked to make sure nothing is checked that would show thier names. These are people that were definitely born after 1940!! I changed nothing from the way I have uploaded it, and what I allow and don't allow, for several years, and this is the first time this has happened. Help!
SPIRIT OF GENEALOGY

What does it matter who gets credit for researching it. What does it matter if ones notes are copied over and over again into new databases. Those who get upset seeing their research in other databases do not have the spirit of genealogy. IN MY BOOK, GENEALOGY IS FOR SHARING. Why have others do the same work of researching and researching, over and over again, when it can be make public and researched once. Who cares where the information comes from, as long as I get the information, and see by my own documentation, that it is done correctly. Don Martin Thomas
I can see that without the message. NOBODY ELSE IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM??? Have tried 1 different computer and have same problem, so have hard time believing it is my computer

GEDCOM escaping?

I've noticed info that I have on my WC page out on the internet. I don't mind the data being "out there", but it appears that the GEDCOM has become accessible. Since I don't allow the GED to be released, I'm wondering how the data got out. I don't mind folks "borrowing" the old fashioned way - without GEDCOM, but I think the GEDCOM may have become accessible somehow. Is this possible?

I would suggest that you check into your security as someone took over my tree database name that I had for over 5 years. When I e-mailed about it, there was nothing that could be done other than tell me to get a new name. I am very leary now on what's going on as I never deleted my tree whatsoever. I contacted the person with the new tree myself since I didn't get any answer other than to tell me to get a new database name. I feel like I am a victim and no one will take responsiblity. I would hate for this to happen to someone else.

I came across the OFFINEER ged listings uploaded by ladyt and there is a large discrepancy between her list and mine. To name one, James OFFINEER (wife Catherine Grymm) and all preceding generations back to Johannes Martin should be OFFNER not OFFINEER. James changed his name when he moved to Ohio. Reason unknown. Before Johannes Martin OFFNER, the name was OEFNER. His father and grandfather were Conrad and Andreas OEFNER in Bavaria. I would like to get in touch with ladyt and find out where she got her information. Thanks.

I would like to make a suggestion to either eliminate the 100mb limitation on downloads or increase it. As time goes by more and more databases are going to be exceeding this limitation. I am in the minority in that my database is exceeding 1.4 million. I would like to up date my database and would like to maintain it as a whole unit and not split up. Splitting defeats the purpose. 500MB or 1GB would be great. There would only be a few of us at the moment but I am sure ALL your companies would benefit from my database. I have over 10,000 famous Americans, 50,000 Royalty and 25,000 Famous people throughout time.

User Rating Feature?

Increasingly, commercial online sites enable the user community to rate or otherwise comment upon the resources being (in most cases) sold.

Ebay encourages people to rate the trustability of other sellers.
Amazon allows users to write their own reviews. And Amazon then encourages readers to rate these user-submitted reviews.

The closest thing Worldconnect has to this is the post-em feature, but this is specific to individual records within a file, not the entire file itself. And I can't search WC for all files that have a post-em, and frankly, that's not really what I want. I do, however, want to be able to search or otherwise identify higher quality files from others.

A really wonderful feature on World Connect would be some sort of rating feature that allowed viewers to rate the quality of the overall quality of a particular file.

I can imagine at least a few of you shuddering at such an idea, but it has proven successful in other venues as I've mentioned above. And I think it could work here.

If WC had such a feature, and if its search results incorporated the rating results such that those more highly rated floated to the top or were otherwise marked (or one could search on: show me only 3 stars and above), it would help TREMENDOUSLY in the weeding out of the INCREASING cacophony of duplicate and clearly badly researched trees on WC. Especially since Ancestry.com has made it so easy for people to copy each others files and data, resulting in the proliferation of badly researched files.

While WC does enable to search for only those records that have SOURCE information, the results are increasingly bad. A "source" of smith.ged or ancestry.com is simply so unhelpful.

The system would need to have some sort of either staff- or (better) community-generated ability to report abuse to thwart attempts to use the user rating system for malicious purposes.

What do you think?

-- Jillaine
I got it removed and since then I only post the web pages, no gedcom.

Recently I've discovered that someone has loaded all my data to WorldConnect as part of their own data. I've emailed them asking for it to be removed for several reasons:
1. It is very out of date and very inaccurate in some places.
2. I want to be the first point of contact for my family tree.
3. I have never uploaded my data to sites like WorldConnect because I was not sure it would not be used for commercial purposes. I have spent thousands of hours researching my family tree and I am not going to put it anywhere where it is not free. In most cases I have found that some subscription sites have provided access to the data. Even if elsewhere it is free and there is no guarantee that the free sites will stay free. So I do not agree to uploading to sites like these.
4. My own website is the obvious place for people to come to look at my data. A google search for any person will normally bring up my site within a few hits. Unfortunately it finds Rootsweb first so they get the inaccurate version.
6. I can tell that you are related through Mary Hole who married James Farmer in 1780 but many of the people you have included are not related to you. I could understand it if you had only included the descendants add ancestors of Mary Hole but most of your database seems to be sourced from mine, including people unrelated to you, e.g. everyone on my mothers side.
7. You have duplicated data on WorldConnect. A search for Jemima Gwyther on WorldConnect brings back 6 times hits for the same person: 3 in database farmerj and 3 in database farmerjr.

I am waiting for a reply.

I am wondering what to do about this if I don't get a reply and am considering uploading my data to WorldConnect so that there is a least one up to date version. I might get more collaborators with the extra exposure. However I am still concerned about who owns the data and whether it will sold on. Where can I see the terms and conditions relating to this?

Is there anything else I can do to get data removed from someone else's tree if I don't get a reply?

Any other creative ideas?

1. Contact info is initially taken from account NICKNAME. Should be from full name.
2. Contact info on extant trees not changed when account NICKNAME is changed. If Separate Owner Info=no, changing the account info should change the tree info.
3. Display of the contact info is a link, but the link is just a copy of the url of the current page.

I've tried for two days to update one of my WC files. It reaches 84 percent and stops. Get a message that it's failed. I tried all the suggestions - disabled firewall, etc. I have a high speed Internet connection. Contacted the help desk. Got a reply telling me how to access my account. Been there, done that. Just before WC changed to the new system, I updated with no problem. Any suggestions?

This morning I uploaded, to adbraley_01, a new copy of my BraleyDeming.ZIP GEDCOM file using http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/wcus. I have done this several times in the last few days, with no problems. This time as the upload completed I got a message that "BraleyDeming.ZIP Exists - Writing BraleyDeming2.ZIP" That has never happened to me before.
Yesterday, when RootsWeb/Ancestry was very busy, I could not upload a ZIP version because it reported that it was a bad GEDCOM file because it started with the wrong beginning. I then uploaded the GEDCOM file unzipped, which worked fine. Today the ZIP file loaded correctly, and was accepted, but gave me that message that I do not understand.

Could the text box size be increased please? Some of us include html there (like pointers to multiple relevant surname associations), and the only way to see things as a whole is to copy+paste to a document file, then copy+paste back to the text box *and* hope it fits in the allotted characters. Actually, if the number of allowed characters could increase some too, it would help. Thanks!

Marissa

Previously reported that when checking "Save as default for new trees", the checkmark does not stick. Returning to the same screen later, it is impossible to tell the status. This happens on all the options pages, and tested with Firefox and IE6.

If you mean this to be an automatic override action, then get rid of the off/on is/isn't do/don't checkmark type box and replace it with a simple pushbutton that automatically saves whatever is showing.

I submitted my family tree to rootsweb and ancestry.com and I finally was able to view it on ancestry world tree and worldconnect, only to find that the people are not connected to each other like they should. Example: Search for William Burton Steele born 27 Aug 1875 in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. When you click on the family, he's not connected with his parents or his wife or his children. His parents are Joseph Hampton Steel(e) and Nancy Jane Arbogast. His wife is Blanche Hyacinth Householder. How do I go about fixing this problem. Because the tree I submitted he was connected with his parents, wife, etc.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Millard
