As I mentioned earlier about The Crucible, take the history with a large grain of salt. It's a play and is fiction. And while Miller knew what he was doing by changing the history to suit his themes, he DID change it. (And the movie changed it even more.) If you REALLY want to learn about the Salem trials, look at the history books. I don't mean texts like in school, but the books written specifically on the trials. And the more recent ones--a lot of earlier theories, such as ergot poisoning and land grabs--have been disproven.
