Hi there. Just a question on this as I have only been here for a few weeks. For the 10 days or so, there seemed to be new records available daily but so far this week there have not been any new additions. Do they typically get posted sporadically or does this delay mean that a much larger collection is to become available?

Also, why don't the newspaper articles show up as hints? I'd like to attach some of these too as supportive information.

Thanks!

I'm curious. I just tried a program by MyHeritage and oddly enough they have software that syncs with the website. Not to mention they even have reports that members can create on site. They tie in a message board, calendar and customizable home page WITH notification; not to mention albums that let you sort your pictures by families. Why isn't Ancestry offering this, its not like the technology doesn't exist. Sites ARE doin it with their software. When will Ancestry be on board?

Two sisters married two guys who are cousins

Hi,

I have discovered after building my tree on Ancestry.co.uk that two Sainsbury sisters married two guys who were cousins.

Edith Sainsbury married Reg Whiting. Bertha Sainsbury married Percy Wheeler. Reg and Percy are cousins. This has resulted in me inadvertantly building duplicate trees above these two guys. I only discovered it when I started down-filling the lines from the most distant ancestors.

I thought I was getting deja vu, or forgetting to update. If I went into the tree one way, the info was there... if I went in another way the info was gone!

It's a mess! About 30-40 people are duplicated.

Is there a fix for this?

regards,

RouX (TJ Clelford-Phillips)

AFT 2008 Will NOT Install!

Hello. I purchased Ancestry Family Tree Essentials 2008. I put the CD in the disk and the Flash splash screen appears, I choose to install the program and I get the little box in the bottom right that says preparing for download, it goes through, that box closes, and then nothing else happens. I cannot get past this. I am running windows vista, and the installation works on another computer in the house that is Win XP, but this isn't my computer, so I can't really use it often. I tried returning the software but they said since it was opened they can't refund the money due to copyright law, so I exchanged it for the same program because that was all I could do, same problem. Grrr. Any help?

Help with error message when merging or saving images

Hello,
I am having a problem with FTM 2006, and hope that someone can help.
I was merging census information into my file and saving the image as well. On one of these attempts I got the following error message "A problem has occured in writing to your disk. Please check that the disk has space availble, that it is formatted and that the drive door is closed." Now whenever I try to save an image either by merging or just attaching an image to a fact, I get the same error message.
I have space available, over 14Gig on both of my partitions. The disk is formatted and I am writing to a hard drive.
I tried loading an older FTM database and this works as my current database used to work. It saves images any way I try. Did I somehow corrupt my current database? Is there a fix for a problem such as this? Please help!!!!

Now without retyping all that work on the one or the other. How can I combine them so they mesh together? I hate to lose all that work. Any suggestions?

Lost Information on AFT

I lost information on thousands of relations when my computer died. I have most of it saved on a CD (and on-line at Ancestry/Rootsweb), but haven't been able to download yet. Bought Ancestry Quest and also tried the last AFT availible, but still can't get my information. I have read all the past information, but still lost. Where should I get AFT software? Should I get the old 2005 Maker. I'm good at genealogy, but suck at computer I guess.

Ancestry Family Tree

I had a crash in my computer. I'm now working on Family Tree Maker software. However, I have about 3/4ths of my data on an Ancestry Family Tree program I downloaded from Ancestry.com about five + years ago. It is saved on a cd, however I can't access the data to transfer it to my new program. I'm guessing it is because I no longer have the base program on my new hard drive. Does anyone have a copy of the program available or must I start again from scratch? I realize that I'll have to re-input the data as it won't transfer, but it still would save me time to copy and paste rather that re-look up all the data. Thanks

I downloaded a free program from Ancestry.com in 2003 in which I logged many hours of research into. I went to look at some records tonight and realized I had lost the program during a reboot. I can't find any downloads anywhere. Is there anyway to download an older version for free or are there any free programs available to view aft files? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Help recovering filesfrom earlier version of AFT

I have been using AFT to work up a (now rather extensive) family record for some time. I recently suffered a near total meltdown on my system, having in the end to reformat the hard drive and reconfigure the entire machine. I had extensive backups of all my data, but not the program files. I've just downloaded the current version of the software and it will not recognize my data files. Instead of the needed .AFT file, my data appears to have been stored in three parts: a small .afa file, a larger .AFm file, and a very large .afz file. Ancestry.com's technical people were very nice, but said they knew of no way to recover my data. Does anyone outthere still have an older version of AFT that can read these files so I can save them. I have pedigree charts for all the direcrt ancestors, but the thousand or so 1st to 4th cousins appear to ve vaporized if I cant get back into the files.
Many thanks for any suggestions (and yes, I've now backed u the program files for the new version, I am at least somewhat ttainable)
Jim

AFT program help!!!???

Ok, here's the deal. Back in 2003, I began researching my family. I used the Ancestry family tree program provided by Ancestry.com which was a free download. Later, I bought the Family Tree maker 2006 program, at the time I had difficulty in transferring the data from the free download to the FTM 2006 (the date and place of marriage did not transfer) so, I kept the old program as a back up, and when I came across a missing date, I would find it on the old program and put it in the new one. Last month we bought a new computer, I thought I had backed up all my records, but, that free AFT program download was not backed up. So, I have the info, but not the program to run it...
Is there a kind soul who would send me a copy of the old AFT program so I can open my information???
Thank you !
Catherine

At one time I was doing my history. I worked hard and even managed to get it onto the web. Its being hosted by my ISP.. I am fixing to change ISPs and need to find a way to get it back.. I no longer have the computer I worked with, nor do I have the program I used.. (treemaker) My house burnt and all the pics and the hard work went up in smoke.. That is why I am no longer doing the work.

BUT I dont want to loose what I did do.

the website is http://www.inu.net/mlbrbyerly/atreethat/

Can anyone tell me how to get it on a disk? I dont just want to DL it to my computer. they die. I want it on a disk. so I can put it in any computer and look at it if I want to. I cant afford to buy another tree maker program. Thats part of the reason I am leaving this ISP they are too much a month. There are lots of pictures that are ONE of a kind. I had the only copies. those copies are now gone and the ones on the web are all thats left.

Please help me if You can think of a solution..

Thank you
Michelle

Backup Problem

I am having trouble backing up my AFT files. I have the latest AFT version. When I try to backup, I get the message "file already exists, do you want to replace it? I hit yes, the backup goes about 50% then I get a message "AncestryFamilyT.exe generated errors and is creating an error log". Then the program shuts down. After I restart the program and retry the backup, I find that the old backup file has been removed and the second backup attempt is successful. I assume the error log is a file named something like BOa01380. I have tried to read this file using notepad but the information is in code and can't be understood by me. Please help me with this problem.

History: The files have been imported from a RWCD that I made when I upgraded from my old computer to a new one. Before I imported the files, I upgraded my Ancestry Family Tree program and also installed the upgraded Ancestry Family Tree program on my new computer. I have added a lot of new information to my files and now they won't backup properly.

Thank you

R. Fry

Family Tree Maker says you can automatically put the current date in book printouts. e.g. in "Edit" for Table of Contents,
Select "Contents" -> "Title & Footnote" and check
"Include Date of Printing" under "Page Number and Date".

However, this section is not "lit up" so I can't change
anything.
The last copy of Ancestry Family Tree online (aft)

Ok, I found a legally downloadable copy of Ancestry family tree online. Here's how to get it.

1. Go to:
http://www.iomega-activedisk.com/servlet/moonshine/goto?page...

2. Download the software.

3. You need a removable media of some kind. I used a USB pen drive, available at Wal-Mart. A zip disk would work too.

4. Double click on the downloaded file ancestrytree-w32-x86-90a.exe

5. If it asks if you want to install Active disk software, say yes. When it is done, you may have to double click the ancestrytree-w32-x86-90a.exe again.

6. Tell it where to install Ancestry Family tree to (the USB Pen Drive).

7. When it is done, you will have a complete set of the files on your zip disk or pen drive.

8. Open the Zip disk or pen drive. Look for a folder called App.

9. Copy the folder App to your My Documents folder. Everything you need to run Ancestry Family Tree is in that folder.

10. Open the App folder and double click on AncestryFamilyTree.exe

Your program will run as normal. Now you'll just have to point it to your files.

I recently uploaded a story to my tree but noticed once it was there that I had made some typos on the introduction. Unfortunately I cannot for the life of me work out how to edit it or at worst remove the whole thing? Has anyone else had this problem or found a solution?

Old Ancestry Family Tree software?

We updated our computer and thought all our files were copied. To my horror I have discovered that the only thing remaining of my tree is a backup .afz file which, as AFT is no longer available, is useless. I've tried to find the old program but to no avail.
Does anyone out there know of a solution besides buying the Ancestral Quest program? Or can help me out with a copy of the old program just so I can retrieve my files? Pleeease help! There are hours of work at stake!
Kirsten.

I know this program is no longer supported, but we have some great experts on the board. 1. When using .rtf to print the index, some names are in bold print. Is there a fix. 2. Would like to make surnames bold print. 3. In 'other options', 'suppress RINS' is dim and am unable to check this box.

It might be time to go with Bob Juch's suggestion and buy a commercial program not affiliated with ancestry.com

In my tree I clicked on the little source leaf that let's you know there are records etc which may match the person in your tree. Sometimes, besides records, there are also links to other peoples trees who may have the same person and if you accept their info you might also get other connections like that persons parents etc. and this info is then also added to your tree. Has this changed recently? Because it looks like I've lost some of those connections within the last 48 hours.

Types of Family Trees on Ancestry

Can someone clarify for me the different options for sharing a family tree on Ancestry.com? I seem to see THREE different methods:

1. Ancestry Family Tree which is the counterpart to Rootsweb's WorldConnect (more or less).

2. Online Family Tree

3. Personal Member Trees

The knowledge base attempts to distinguish between #2 and #3 but I don't quite get it.

This is coming up because people are asking here and elsewhere how to download their ancestry trees so they can incorporate them into their computer's genealogy software (like Family Treemaker).

It appears-- from the knowledgebase-- that you can download GEDCOMs in #1 and #2, but that you cannot get at your family tree file if you've used #3 above.

Please clarify. And also, please respond via the message board, I'm not on the list. Thanks!

-- Jillaine Smith
Washington DC
Duplicate wife won't go away -- now UNKNOWN

I have made several errors and need help resolving my mess. First, somehow I added a second wife twice -- same name, same kids, everything. I was afraid to delete either one for fear of losing all the kids too, so I just unlinked one of them. The kids were still attached to the remaining 2nd wife -- so far, so good. I then deleted the unlinked wife.

Now I still have two second wives, but one is named "UNKNOWN" and I can't delete it/her. I tried renaming it and then deleting. It just deleted the rename and UNKNOWN is still there.

How can I get rid of "UNKNOWN"?

AFTSetup.exe self installing file.

About a year ago I made CD's for family members many of whom have slow dialup or no internet connection at all. I downloaded AFTSetup.exe and put it and the AFT family file onto the CD and handed these out to family members so they could see what had been done with the information that they had provided.

I would send this file to a few people who could then see it is made available. It is a 5+ meg file and takes about 5 minutes to scan and send the file. I have not sent anyone the file so do not know how the email compression would affect the file upon running it.

Please contact me off list bill@bookwizards.com and I will email a copy to someone and verify that it installs OK before emailing it to others.

This returns tens of thousands of results on alot of my tree.
Is there a way to make it search by exact matches by default?
Sharing data

Yesterday I went to a family get together they have all become interested in what we have done so everyone showed up with their shoeboxes of pictures and other information. This worked really well as photos of people were identified by the various people there some family friends and relatives we had not found were remembered because of the interaction between family members in remembering things that fit together to create a missing piece of information.

I took a CD with a copy of the AFT setup file and the .aft database and associated images files. I had done this to a second computer here sending the files via email to it saved a CD and everything works fine. I loaded the files on my wifes sisters computer. Aft installed fine but the AFT database opened in write protect mode. They are not able to use the database with their family since they can not alter it. Also the image files do not get found although the path to them is the same on their computer as it is on ours.

C:/Genealogy/Images/ (Surname Folders) I made a copy of the entire images folder to the CD then using Windows explorer dragged it to the C:/Genealogy/ folder I had created on their computer. I can use Windows Explorer to open the files and the photos are there.

Any ideas why it did this There are 3 other families and it would be nice to get them all involved in this and be able to share the information.

Of course this now makes me the enterer of all of the data unless there is a way to fix this problem. Also I do not know why the image files do not link. I do not mind the extra data entry I do not believe the interest will last and at least if I do it I know it is being done. If the image files would work I could live with that and the read only would protect the database from becoming scattered in 4 different locations each a different version.

Need identity of genealogy software with extension .afz

This is going to sound really stupid. I begain building the family tree a few years ago. I purchased a genealogy software online which uses the extension .afz and I can't recall which one it was. My hard drive began giving me signals that it was getting ready to crash so I backed up all my data files. Lucky for me that I did because my hard drive did crash about a month later. Now, I'm left with all the work I did on our family tree locked in the file with the .afz extension.

If anyone knows which genealogy software uses the .afz extension I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!!

Using AFT to Create a CD ROM for Distribution?

My 5th cousin once removed made up a beautiful CD ROM of the family genealogy, which he distributed to over 40 members of the extended family. With it one can view generations by descendency or search by name or surname index.
Viewers open it by running: [CD drive]:\wc\index.htm and it opens a browser window. One can click on links to see a person's scrapbook or biographical information, decendants and forebears. It is fantastic!
I want to make a similar CD for my paternal side. But, very sadly, my cousin died just a few months after making the CD, and apparently didn't tell anyone just how he did it.
I would greatly appreciate any ideas on how to make such a CD. Thanks in advance.

-Shay

If I have a personal email from a John Smith AND I am using a message board posting from the same John Smith...

.. how do I record the sources? Are they citations from a common John Smith source? Do I need to have a separate source for each email or internet posting?

I guess this goes to some pretty basic documentation issues. I have been a little nervous about the appropriateness of my habits and am considering re-organizing all my sources in AFT.

Very Confused About Edit Source List

What would one enter as a source type in attempting to document Census Records located on Ancestry.com that are indexed and linked to images? There seem to be about four or five possible types, but the only thing I find at the bottom of the database description is a vague reference to the fact that the information was taken from National Archive Microfilms. Should I enter the type as Census? Electronic File? Internet? Electronic Database? National Archives? Photo? I know the last one is a bit of a stretch, but it is an image I'm ultimately dealing with! Too many options, too little documentation! Even the book I bought about the software doesn't say much. Need to have something that links the website to the software it promotes (or used to promote) Sorry, ranting here, will post that in a more appropriate forum. Any input/guidance greatly appreciated.

Hi.

I am researching the genealogy software, trying to decide which to purchase to replace my Generations Liberty Edition
Version 8.5.0.0 - which has become very quirky lately. I don't want to buy another program and then find out it is just a quirky. I also want a program that will publish to a cd - and publish in book form.

So can you tell me if "Ancestry Family Tree" is the same software as "Family Tree Maker 2005"?

What can you tell me about this program that would convince me that it is the one I want? Thanks! I value the opinon of real people who are using the program.
Vicki

Looks like a bug that IE seems to allow anyway.

Here is what I am seeing above my header HTML:

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Ancestry Family Tree Version 10.0.-1 - 9/18/2001">
<title>Selected Families/Individuals - TOC</title>
</head>
<body<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Ancestry Family Tree Version 10.0.-1 - 9/18/2001">
<title>Selected Families/Individuals - TOC</title>
</head>
<body>

Slide for entire tree

I realize a slideshow can be run for one individual. I wonder if it is possible have a slideshow run for an entire tree seemlessly. I am going to a reunion where I wanted all individuals with photos to have a running continuous slideshow of pictures and multimedia run for me.

I didn't see that this was possible, so should I submit this as a feature request? Thanks.

Using Living and not reporting living

I am trying to determine when it is appropriate to use "Living" for the first name of a person in my genealogy? I want to keep the data in my GED but when submitting to Ancestry or to a web page or report I want the option to mark a first name as living instead of typing in the actual text of "Living" and keeping their first name written somewhere else.

I also do not see where I can choose to mark an individual or individuals as not wanting them to be included in a print. Should I assume that each time I have to ensure I don't select these names when reporting? Thanks.

Ahnentafel Numbers

Can anyone help me with a rather fundamental (and probably rather silly!) query regarding the use of ahnentafel numbers on my Ancestry family tree.

I've managed to type in all of my pedigree information (some going back eleven generations). When I click on "ahnentafel" on my own individual record sheet it only lists the first six generations. If I want any more numbers, I have click to on another individual further "up the line" and then, of course, the ahnentafel numbers are incorrect as they start with that person at "1" (also sometimes there is no "ahnentafel" option and often only two or three further generations are shown!).

Hope I have made myself clear - can anybody help, please?

Thanks,
Penny

Lost my genealogy software, the extension is .afz. Does anyone know what this is?

This is going to sound really stupid. I begain building the family tree a few years ago. I purchased a genealogy software online which uses the extension .afz and I can't recall which one it was. My hard drive began giving me signals that it was getting ready to crash so I backed up all my data files. Lucky for me that I did because my hard drive did crash about a month later. Now, I'm left with all the work I did on our family tree locked in the file with the .afz extension.

If anyone knows which genealogy software uses the .afz extension I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!!

Sharing Family Tree with Photos to Others

I want to copy my family tree file to a CD along with the photos that are linked to the family tree. But when I do this and try to read it on another computer, it searches the original path that was on my computer. So when you try to open a picture it can't find it, but searches for the path that was used on my computer to open photos. I am trying to give copies to my family. Help please!
