In case you haven't already made a decision, I would also recommend the flip-pal. I've had mine for over a year now. I've taken it to people's houses and scanned photographs with very good results. I've also had good results scanning photos mounted in old photo albums, newspaper clippings and post cards. In addition to genealogy I do digital scrapbooking and have used the flip pal to scan buttons, ribbons and other flat items.
