Good-bye SSDI

It appears that a ridiculous requirement to restrict the public access to the SSDI (Social Security Death Index) was included in the new tax law passed today, about to be signed by the President.

I'm not sure what happens with the SSDI that's already out there. I presume the current SSDI will be "frozen" as a historical record and we'll not be able to see any further updates.

In the meantime, my understanding from press reports, is:

1) The IRS will continue to NOT refer to the SSDI when releasing refund checks to dead people.
2) The IRS will continue to NOT identify addresses with more than a "few" refunds.

Which doesn't make any sense.

And, which would have been much more effective at battling the problem of identity theft and IRS erroneous refunds.

About all we can do is to write our congressman at how ridiculous this is.
