One procedure some of us have found helpful is to place the version number of FTM that last saved the file in the name of that file. The initial name change should probably be done from within FTM2009 and can be done by putting "2009" at then end of the name: xxx2009.ftm. This change needs to be reflected in the name of the .ftm file, as well as the Media folder.

Then, copy that file with Windows explorer (I do that to another directory, which also has the year of the FTM version in the folder name, but that may not be necessary). Rename that file to be xxx2014.ftm.

Now install FTM2014, and direct it to open xxx.2014.ftm. The most recent versions of FTM offer you the option to create a copy of the file before updating. That's an extra step that is up to you.
