Now I remember the problem I had with FTM. For a "GEDCOM Event" in version 5.5 the only value that can follow the event tag (DEAT, BIRT, ADOP, etc.) is a"Y". FTM combined the EVENT tag and the ATTRIBUTE tag (RESI, EDUC, TITL, OCCU, etc) into one one tag type called "fact". Attribute tags have descriptions following the tag where events can only have a "Y" or nothing. So I enter a "Y" in what FTM calls a description expecting that to be enough for FTM to know that an individual 'had that event occur' (i.e. 'They died' or 'they were adopted'). But I found that this was not enough for FTM.
So in the world of GEDCOM, entering any one of the following would indicate an individual is dead:
3) DEAT Y
I found that without option number 3, the best answer for FTM is to enter a DEAT.PLAC value that is large enough to be accurate but not specific. For example "USA", or "Europe".
