Nerida,
From out here, the statement "nothing happens" doesn't make sense. Sorry.
Is that the EXACT error message "There was a problem connecting to the registration server. Please check your Internet connection and try again or close this dialog and register later." Some times, the exact wording of an error message contains a hint to the problem.
I have a real hard time understanding "When I click on Online Help nothing happens". SOMETHING has to happen. An hour glass, a time out, but something happens. I can't see your screen or computer nor have I had this problem on any of my computers. Sorry I don't understand "nothing happens".
Something on your PC is blocking Family Tree Maker from accessing the internet. Usually its a Firewall. Remember that you may have more than one firewall on your PC. Windows has firewall settings as well as other software programs designed to keeping your PC from accessing the Internet.
Since you were able to install the Update AND that you said "Your copy of Family Tree Maker is up to date" there is something else on your PC that is causing this.
This is NOT a program problem, but we need to identify what is causing this.
Yes, others have had similar problem, but the knowledge Base articles have helped many others resolve this.
What is not clearly in the article are a couple of other causes: 1) Norton, 2) Dial Up connections, and 3) Satellite connections. And will mention again, the user not recognizing that there may be more than one Firewall on a PC.
