Marc,
YOU have to determine how YOU want to handle unknown names. You will run into it a lot. You might want to try a couple of ways, but look how it looks in Reports and Trees.
What I do, is to use 5 Underscores for both BirthNames and Surnames.
Using the example of the siblings, I would ONLY enter the Father's name and leave the mother's name blank. I am guessing that you know the siblings surname. So, I would enter:
_____ [ surname ] in the Fathers field, where [ surname ] is the Surname that you know.
In your Joseph ? example, I would enter:
Joseph _____
