I second Brynne's recommendation. If you have to make an additional investment in software, you should definitely check out the competition.

Roots Magic can import your entire FTM database in one step and do it more faithfully than FTM2008. There is even a handy conversion guide for FTM --> Roots Magic published by a former FTM user. See HTTP://FREEPAGES.GENEALOGY.ROOTSWEB.COM/~JILLAINE/RM/
Legacy will also import all your data in a two steps (FTM --> GEDCOM --> Legacy)
Both programs have free trials and yes, you can get rid of them entirely if you decide to use something else. They also have very active and helpful user mailing lists.
