Stuart,
First, in your firewall, delete the www in the www.service.familytreemaker.com just "service.familytreemaker.com"
As for Norton 360 ver 1, as for my experience, that program corrupts the win xp gui (has nothing to do with ftm). As soon as i installed 360 (as an upgrade from Norton AV 2007), i could not access the internet and the gui became unstable and both ftm and windowes had behavior quite similar to what you are seeing with ftm. I have not tried ver 2 which may have corrected the problem.
Are you sure your safe mode did not load the antivirus (its not the firewall that was causing the problem)? I had the stop all the symantec services to get my system to work.
At that point, I uninstalled and completely purged Symatec (Norton AV) from the machine including removing any reg entries and removing any folders and common files left behind. Then installed McAffee. No problems since.
Good Luck,
John
