Russ,

I have done a safe reboot with network that doesn't load Nortons and it still doesn't work.
I have disconnected Norton firewall - Nope.
I have turned off Windows firewall at the same time - Nope
I have turned it back on and made sure FTM is listed in exceptions. - Nope
I have revisited the http://ftm.custhelp.com/ site and...
1.Make sure that you are able to connect to Ancestry.com and login to Ancestry.com through your normal web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) not through the Family Tree Maker product - Yes I can
2.Check your computer's date and time and make sure that your computer is correctly set to your time zone. - 9:08PM 17/7/2008, Timezone (GMT +10:00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney (I live in Sydney)
3.Open a browser and go to the following URL: https://service.familytreemaker.com/ohanaservice/authenticat.... Opening this link in your browser should bring up a page with text similar to the following: ?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"? If this does not occur continue to the next step. - I get...<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> and then a page and a half of text
4.Check your firewall software settings and ensure that the Family Tree Maker 2008 executable (FTM.exe) has access to “service.familytreemaker.com” on both ports 80 and 443. This may involve adding FTM.exe as an exception in the Windows Firewall. - As explained above, I have done that. If I type www.service.familytreemaker.com in a web browser it can't find a site. I have added 2 new ports called www.service.familytreemaker.com and set one on port 80 TCP and one on 443 TCP. I then edited them to UDP. - Nope

I am not a computer expert but I am not a newbie either. This one has me beat though. I have uninstalled and cleared registry keys and re-installed about 20 times now. It is only this program that I am having any sort of problems with. I think I will just use it in its bare bones version as a tool to store my family tree information on my hard drive and use Ancestry on the web for everything else.

I'm very frustrated and disappointed with this program. I do not think I will update in 2009 unless it is a lot better than this version.

Thanks again for your assistance,

Stuart
