Preferred Spouse

I've recently started to use FTM 2008, version 17.0.0.965, all patches downloaded & applied! I have a person that has been married twice. On the person tab for him, where it shows all individual & shared facts, both wives show & their marriage dates, but I have both showing as preferred, I cant seem to 'uncheck' the one that isn't preferred. I've tried deleting her, deleting the marriage, but it still shows as preferred when I re-input her details. CAN ANYBODY PLEASE HELP??
Thanks Ann

If the word 'Preferred' that you're referring to is over on the far right side of the Fact (date/place of marriage); then the word Preferred refers to the Source of that fact.
I don't believe that it is indicating that that specific marriage is preferred over another marriage that might be listed.

The ability to display a preferred spouse is a new feature in FTM 2009

Ann,
I wouldn't wait to move up to 2009, especially if you already have it. Issues like the one on this thread is resolved in 2009, from what I have seen.

Takes Russ's advice
FTM 2009 is a super version of 2008, ie they both work exactly the same way so the learning curve is the same
So if you have 2009 use it

As Johndd states in a previous post, FTM 2009 does allow to select a 'preferred' spouse and also to set the order in which multiple spouses appear in the person tab.
Once you receive and install FTM 2009, go to the Family tab where there is a person with multiple spouses. Select the Choose Spouse icon and one of the choices is 'Set Spouse Order'. The resulting pop-up allows one to select a Preferred Spouse plus set the order of spouses to be displayed on the Person tab.
That's a great addition.

Contrary to other responses, selecting the preferred spouse is NOT new in 2009. However I believe that setting the spouse order might be, and that is perhaps the source of the confusion.
It sounds like you are looking at the PERSON tab with the FACTS button selected. If you instead select the RELATIONSHIPS button you will see there is a list of Spouses and you can choose the preferred one there. In 2009 you choose the spouse and there is a check box in the details on the right hand side of the screen to mark the spouse as the preferred one. I can't remember if it was the same in 2008 but I should imagine it was.

this is the box that I was trying to 'uncheck' as both were checked as preferred, it didn't seem to be possible to uncheck one of them in 2008. Today I received 2009, I've loaded it and have now been able to sort that problem, now I've just got to work out why when 2009 automatically imported my tree, it didn't import media files!
