FTM version 16 has stopped working

Using FTM updated to version 16. Operating system is XP, with SP2. Tried to open software to add a new birth in the family. FTW opened but my default file did not open. Clicked on FILE to open a FTM file and the computer response was NOT RESPONDING. Inserted installation CD and attempted a REPAIR. Same response. Deleted the software and performed a FULL NEW INSTALL. Same response. I've turned off my Norton 360 virus software to no avail. Any suggestions? My FTW main file is 16.4Mb in size.

denverweigel,

What happened to your PC the last time that you were able to open this file? Did it close correctly?

Did something happen to your computer between that last time and now?

Russ

Thanks for the reply. The file and program are now functioning properly. As for your questions, it's been a couple months ago since I last opened the file. As far as I know, I've never had a problem with the file NOT closing properly. In the case of the fix this time, I ran a full virus scan using Norton 360. It found a couple medium threats but it appeared to be malware and not true viruses. The software "fixed" the problem and I was required to reboot the system. When the computer rebooted, I tried FTM and it worked like usual. I'm not sure if it was the reboot or the malware fix that solved the issue but again, thanks for the response.

Denver,

Thank you for the updatae.

I would do the following:

Please go to any Family Page and run these two Utilities:

CTRL+ALT+C = FileCompression

CTRL+ALT+SHFT+UpArrow = FileChecker

Are there any Errors?

Guessing that there will be NO Errors, I would then Back Up your Family File (File, Back Up)

Good luck,

Russ

Russ...
I ran the compression on my main file. When it asked me (in the beginning) I backed up the file, so I had that backup before compression. The compression worked... took about 15-20 minutes. I reopened the same Family Page after compression and ran the file error checking. It must have found a gazillion errors. The error window only showed 17 but the scroll bar was indicating there were a lot. The message window indicated the file was corrupt and I needed to use a backup file (FBK). I couldn't get out of the error message. I clicked OK and the "X" but to no avail. I used task manager and killed FTW. I restarted it with the FBK backup file and the file error check found 1 error. The error is test #20511 with a description "Book 55231 has Book 31933 with illegal starting page: 0". My FTW file is 17,196Kb, the FBK file is 17,665Kb, and the FBC file is 12,721Kb.

Denver,

First, please do not think of the FBK file as a Back Up. Its a copy of the FTW file.

The filesize of the FTW file and the FBK file will be exactly the same. A FBC file (compressed Back Up) will be smaller.

Please Reopen the FTW file and
Please run this Utility from any Individual's Family Page:

CTRL+ALT+SHFT+LeftArrow

Please go to this website:

http://pastftm.custhelp.com/

Enter 1396 into the "Keyword Search" box and read that Knowledge Base Article. It should help you with this Error Message, and describe how to use the LOG file

Russ...
You've been relentless in attempting to solve my problem and I appreciate it. Here's what I've got...
I have an FTW file of size 17665KB.
Compressed to 12978KB.
I ran the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-LeftArrow utility (FTM Checker w/file fixer).
Clicked START and got 1 error.
Test #20511 "Book 55231 has Book 31933 with illegal starting page: 0".
Answered OK to fixing the file.
Inserted a path and file name of ERRORLOG.txt.
Inserted a path and file name for the NEW FTW file.
Utility ran EXPORTING INDIVIUALS.
Message came back at conclusion that an Error log was NOT created because it was not required.
Shut down the program and opened the NEW file.
The newly created file is 17021KB in size.
Ran the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-LEFTARROW utility and the system came up with my gazillion errors again and I had to use Task Manager to end the program.
I've gone through the 1396 instructions twice now with the same results.
Am I missing something in your instructions and those from the 1396 KB article?

Denver,

The article just talks about the .log file.

Does that CAS+UpArrow still show errors?

If so, please provide a couple.

Do any of them show WCHAR(10) and WCHAR(13)?

Russ

Russ,

CAS-UPARROW produces 21 errors.
I've copied the screen to my clipboard and pasted it to a .jpeg file which I've attached. It shows the first 18 of the 21 errors. The remaining 3 are the 50005 error with records 56214, 56342, and 56406.
The WCHAR errors have never shown up.

Denver,

Are you using the Book feature?

How many books do you have in your file?

Do you have any scrapbook items in your file?
