I use FTM 2014 and recently had was appears to be this very problem. When I tried to start FTM I received the message that FTM did not close properly. I then received the message that FTM had encountered a problem and needed to close.
I called FTM support and they directed me to Answer ID 5029. You should be able to find this at Ancestry.com help. It is fairly complicated but completing this process fixed my problem. I did have to re-register FTM and reset some of the settings under Tools, Options. Also some of my saved report options were lost and had to be reset.
If this had not worked the next step would have been to uninstall and reinstall FTM, Answer ID 4848.
