Is there a unique ID for each person or family unit ?

Classification: Query
I've had a search but can't find any info, possibly due to my search phrases.

I am trying to produce my online tree into a printed version, and am in the process of making a nice new filing system to deal with my mess. I am making folders for each family unit.

I want to assign each family unit a unique number, and in addition each person on the tree a unique number so i can index them etc.

I assume that as FTM is a database, each preson must already have a number? I do not know how to find this. If this number does not exist does anyone know how to add one. Or how to add a unique identifier to the family units?

Any other helpful hints from more experienced peeps about how to organise my offline filing system would be greatfully received !!! (at the moment I have a big tub with 4 ring binders, 1 for starting with each grandparent)

Thanks
garry
