There's been a lot written about this on these boards. The latest patch changed the Backup procedure to capture the Sync control files. It was a glaring omission when FTM 2012 was first introduced last year.

If you don't want to use backup you can proceed with copying your FTM file and its associated media folder as well as the sync control files which you will find at User\Appdata\Roaming\Family Tree Maker. These are hidden files so you will have to change Windows Explorer's File options to display them.
