Malware is one thing I've seen cause file errors. Programs stopping suddenly is another. I would do two things just to rule out these problems.
First I would run a chkdsk on the disk drive containg your local file. In Windows File Explorer, right-click the drive letter and select Properties. Select Tools, then Check Now. Check both boxes and and click Start. If you get a messages saying the drive is in use, accept the offer to check the drive upon restart then do a normal restart.
The second thing I would do is search for "Microsoft Safety Scanner" and download and run Microsoft's free program.
