I installed Revo Uninstaller and followed the steps you mentioned. I then re-installed Family Tree Maker. The program is, however, still unusable. When I try to navigate away from the initial family view screen, I receive an error message and the program then closes.

The message is:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program:C\Program Files (86)\Family Tree Maker 16\Ftw.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I have been using FTM for years and have never encountered this problem before. This all happened because Windows 7 installed an update without my consent. Ever since then FTM has not worked. I used system restore to remove the update, but the problem remains.

Does anyone have any further suggestions on how I can fix this, either from the FTM side or how I can truly get rid of the update since system restore clearly didn't do it properly?

Also, assuming I do get rid of the update, is there anything I can do to prevent my computer from installing automatic updates? I don't want a new 'update' to just cause this problem again as soon as I fix FTM.
