FrontPage 2000 - Can I do it?

As a new webmistress, I am contemplating redesigning our DAR chapter site and moving it to Rootsweb (currently on geocities--not thrilled with page builder or pop-ups there). I have FrontPage 2000. Does Rootsweb support sites designed with FP 2000? What issues or limitations might I have if it is possible? I am pretty new at this.

Thanks for any insight!

FrontPage 2002 not seen online or saving to hdd properly

G'day
I've made my web pages in FrontPage 2002 & used FTP Explorer to upload them to my web space with my isp

I have checked & my web space at my isp is all correct & I can connect fine with my ftp application

None of my pages are seen online so obviously they're not saving properly on my hdd as html before I upload them

I got my isp to check the files I'd uploaded & all they'd say was the index.htm looked a bit "funny" but wouldn't offer any other help

I have also tried making the pages in Publisher - they show up online but only through an index page & you have to click on each page individually

With FrontPage 2002, it doesn't save any the graphics with it so I have to upload them indivually off my hdd

I just dont feel like its saving properly

I have disabled Front Page Server Extensions as I've been told that can cause problems

Can anyone help me please? I would really appreciate it

Cheers
Teri

I "think" I've done it! FrontPage 2002 that would show & save to hdd

G'day All

Firstly, thanks to everyone trying to help me with FrontPage 2002 when I couldn't get my pages to show up online

Judy gave me a clue when she advised me to get FrontPage Cleaner - I couldn't find it but, I decided to do it manually - I deleted all FrontPage temp files, started from scratch, did one page as Pat had said to do (I read all the tutorials, Pat) & it worked!

I've since done exactly the same thing with the other pages (5) & put them online

My connection is soooooo slow (28.8 if I'm LUCKY!) so I'm having troubles seeing it still but I feel more confident that I'm now on the right track

I'll try to get someone with a faster connection to try them out for me & see if they work - if they don't, I'll delete all the temp files again & start again

I used FrontPage 2002 years ago & didn't have these problems so I don't understand why its happening now

So thank you all once again - if I can't get them to work, maybe I'll come back & see if any of you can help me further if that's ok

Hooroo
Teri

Fp2000 - question about folders that begin with underscore

Hi,

I recently created a new web using an external style sheet (thanks to Pat G). When I made my first folder/page in this web, I had copied in some old pages from another web (which used a different design). My intention was to copy the content from the old pages to the new web pages in their own new folder.

Over the last couple weeks, I've made changes and new pages for the "new" web based on the old content of those pages. (I did not just copy the content, I typed it on the new page, so nothing would get messed up on my new template.) Then I deleted the "old" pages.

The old pages had my very first attempts at webmaking. So, for example, one of those old pages used a left border. I have none of that in my new web.

Last night I was going through the broken links Reports and saw broken links in folders that begin with underscore -- but NONE of those "pages" still exist in this web (they were connected to the "old" pages I have since deleted.)
"Broken links" are in:
_borders_left
page: left.htm----OLD, not used in THIS web
page: top.htm-----OLD, not used in THIS web
_private (I think I made this _folder to store a few pages one time. It just has some OLD pages NOT in use in any web and that I don't want anymore.)
_includes (has 2 OLD "includes" that have been changed so these 2 are NOT in use in this web)

So, is it okay to delete the pages I made that got stuck in or have copies in these _folders? What rules should I follow when thinking about deleting something from one of the underscore folders?

There is also ONE item called "themes.inf" in _themes. But I've never (knowingly) applied any theme to this web. It may have copied in with one of the old page copies that I have since deleted. Should I leave this there or can I delete "themes.inf" without causing any problem?

Thanks!
Judy

Lots of options for building a free website for your family tree

There are several options to build your own family history website. I learned the hard way not to go the route of loading software on my computer and creating it that way. There are a bunch of sites that let you do it all online in a very easy way. You don't need to download anything onto your computer or even pay in most cases if you are willing to have ads on your site. Wikipedia has a list if you look up "Free Webhosts".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_Webhosts

I have also used a differenct computer for pasting and it does the same thing.
chelle

Sorry everyone, but I have another problem I hope you can solve for me.

I have two sites that are census guides to the Orphanages, Poor Farms and other institutions. At the end of 2005 I was informed that cox would no longer support Microsoft Server Extensions and as a result I am no longer able to make live updates.

I am in the process of moving the sites, and I thought one quick and easy way to do this was to copy and paste the information, to a new site and republish to a different server. When I copy and paste the individual pages, they are no longer linked to the home page. I tried recalculating hyperlinks and that didn't work either.

I am hoping you can solve this problem for me without me having to manualy re-type the info.

Thanks,

Karen

Hi, I have Front Page 2003, comes with my domain, plus links to a Legacy File and Family Tree Quick and Easy File. Two separate family trees linked to my ugly home page. I hate my format and the Front Page Templates just aren't attractive to genealogy sites. I have considered downloading a template from a designer, but don't know how that would work with Front Page. Plus all my files are messed up. is there a rule of thumb as to where the web site should be stored and how to make subfolders for the two sites? Either C drive, documents and settings? My Documents? Also how do I break the site into pages, instead of one long scroll?
I am just beginning.
Thank you,
Ruth

Any new HTML/Gedcom software that works with FRONTPAGE???

I have a family tree website I created with Frontpage. At the time gedcom technology was kind of weak, and the only way I was really able to list any family tree structure was through individual pedigrees. (Ex. http://www.bommarito.us/tree1.htm )

I'm looking for something where you can put up an All Inclusive family tree. So you can see the links from person to person on a large scale.

I haven't kept up with family tree software. So I was just wondering if something new has come along.

Any links to site that have that would be appreaciated.

http://www.bommarito.us/

I created a template with Photoshop and now I'm trying to use it in Frontpage. It seems to not work correctly. I try to use it and the font drops to the end of the page and the picture just seems to block off everything. What should I do?

FP2000; Recreating websites after hard-drive failure

Just had to have my hard-drive replaced and I'm trying to re-do my 3 websites that I had originally created with FP2000. All 3 sites are hosted by RootsWeb.

One of my websites was for PAGenWeb (Perry Co.)-- unfortunately I wasn't able to copy these files before the drive totally failed. I was hoping to somehow access the files already uploaded at my site and download them back into the new drive. I can't seem to figure out how to go about this-- how do I get to the files and put them back into FP2000?

As for the other two sites (one is on freepages)...I was able to copy the files to a cd before the drive failed...but still am having problems getting the files I copied back into FP.

Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Cathy

Using frontpage 2000 I find it difficult to create a messageboard. Does any of you have finished code I could recycle?

I also need to password protect certain pages on the web. I need advice on how to do this also.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Anders

FrontPage 98

I am having problems with publishing with FrontPage 98. My web page is:
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~rajordan/

When I click the "Publish" button, it asks for THREE (3) pieces of information:
1 - "Publish FrontPage Web to" ("Please specify the location to which you want to publish your FrontPage web:")
2 - "FTP Server Name:"
3 - "Directory Path:"

I have tried numerous combinations. I tried the obvious, then I started trying really off-the-wall stuff. All got errors.
"Unable to connect to the host ftp"
or
"System exception: access violation"
or
"Unable to connect to the host xyz"

I can publish with WS-FTP, but I should be able to publish with FrontPage 98. No one has been able to tell me all THREE (3) pieces of information.

Please, can someone provide me the information?

Thanks for all your help, everyone, but I have not succeeded. I have tried innumerable different combinations, but I think this is the closest ones:

First of all on the first box screen. More webs button.
More Webs address: http://users.rootsweb.com
FTP address: users.freepages.rootsweb.com
dir: (Whatever your topic is and example is:) genealogy_html
Then your password

host: http://users.rootsweb.com
ftp: users.freepages.rootsweb.com
dir: history_html
System exception: access violation

host: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com
ftp: ftp://users.freepages.rootsweb.com
dir: history_html
System exception: access violation

Something is still not right (yes, I have the history_html, the username, and the password correct)

Please, I need someone who really knows - not just guessing. I know everyone is trying to help, but....
