Tony, it's great to read your reasonable and obviously knowledgeable analysis of the situation. I think this entire discussion should serve as a cautionary tale for anyone starting out and considering buying genealogy software. I know if I were just starting out, myself, and read all this string, I would avoid FTMM until it gets a better track record (and hopefully it will, eventually).
My two files are small compared to some, large compared to others, with over 8,000 people in one, and half of that in the other. In the 20 years I've been using Reunion, it has had a few unexpected crashes, but I can say the Reunion support at Leister have been the best, most accessible, responsive, and helpful of any support staff for any software package I've ever used -- even down to having me send a copy of my file to run diagnostics, make repairs, and other personalized service and discussion. Perhaps there are other software packages out there like that, but this has at least been my experience there. I've seen no evidence of such accessibility and helpful response from the Ancestry side, with FTMM.
Thanks again for your information!
