Record Identifier on GEDCOM

Having recently acquired an iMac I am considering migrating my family tree information from RootsMagic to a mac based program. One of my main concerns however is to preserve the unique identifier number I have on RootsMagic. I display RIN (Record Number) after each name in RootsMagic and have used that to catalogue my source data. So, for example all the info for my ancestor James Weir 66 is filed under James Weir 66. As I have several James Weirs and indeed many born the same year this has been a very convenient way of making sure I know who is who.
If I migrate my information to another program how do I preserve the RIN? I can see how to export the info on to a GEDCOM but how do I import it into the new program?
Would be grateful for any advice. I am currently running RM successfully using VMware Fusion but wondering if it would be a good time to try MacFamilyTree, Reunion or other.
Thanks Jane
