There are people in the community that port the software on a regular basis to Windows and Mac. It is developed as a Linux software, though.

Once you get over the learning curve (the online wiki is comprehensive and a great help), it becomes easy and powerful.

I have been running gramps on windows for a few years now. I tried a few other free programs, but didn't like them as much as gramps. Since then I have bought FTM (Family Tree Maker) but have not used it enough to get familiar with it.
I use it. Needs a Linux machine to run on, not available for Windows. Comprehensive, reliable but I found it's not the easiest to use. Try the more user-friendly Family Tree Builder (for Windows).

I have to agree with you Arkiedan. Gramps is totally non-intuitive. The GUI is, well, reminds me of windows 3.1 programming. I have tried to post to them to update it with more intuitive GUI but not have heard back from them. I use it every once in a while and do update the software just to see if the have improved it. But I have stayed with ancestry.com

Good luck.

"Gramps, the Genealogical Research and Analysis Management Programming System, is a free genealogy program for Linux, Windows, and Macintosh, that offers many features. It is available in many languages other than English. A new version has now been released that adds several new languages plus several bug fixes.
I switched to Linux (Ubuntu) about 3 years ago and have no Windoze software on my sytem any more. I have about 30K names in my repository. I use a combination of Ancestry.com and GERAMPS to maintain the trees. I use Ancestry as a collarboration tool and allow my other family members to see my data and download. I download to GED and update my GRAMPS on a regular basis and to have with me when I travel. I love the find duplicate and similar Gramplets. I have used PAF, MFT, and many others through my 30 years of research and every one has its advantages and disadvantages. If you would like to play with dome of them, I suggest you try your local LDS location, they usually have most of them installed and will let you explore. Bring your GED on a thumbdrive and enjoy.

Amelia, You might also try contacting some of the people who have used Gramps and posted their family trees on the website. There is at least one page of listings of family trees. In addition, on the website, you can post queries about the software to those who are using it. This might give you some additional information.

Thanks for the reply. I have always used a genealogy software (Generations, then Family Tree Maker). I really like that the Family Tree Maker can link to the Ancestry media. So far we have not made the switch. It is still up in the air, but I wanted to see what others had experienced with it.

Not intuitive often means "doesn't work like the stuff I dued to used".

If you have never used any genealogy software before, it will seem just fine.

I moved to a Linux (Ubuntu) operating system a couple years ago and tried Gramps last November. My view as follows:

Transferring my rather large data file (23,000+ names) using Gedcom was relatively easy and I could even transfer my photographs into Gramps with little difficulty.

Gramps, however, is without a doubt the strangest genealogy software I've ever used. Nothing is intuitive and moving through the files feels oddly convoluted. I spent a month trying to acclimate myself and, at the end of that month, I was no more comfortable with it than when I installed it.

In frustration I finally dumped Gramps and went back to Legacy using Virtualbox. I'm still a Linux user but I boot into a Windows XP virtual machine to do Legacy.

The bottom line is, for some, Gramps might work fine but it in no way compares with most of the Windows application. Try it and I think your experience will be the same as mine.

I haven't used much genealogy software, so I can't say how it compares to them. It runs on Linux, which was my primary requirement.

1 - Finds Possible Duplicate People, allows you to review and merge or not merge.
2 - Import and export GEDCOM
3 - Useful reports - Ahentafel, etc.
4 - Generates websites and booklets

Check their website to see what all the features are. I haven't been using it long enough to give a full review.

SUPPORT: For glitches with the software itself is good. For genealogy in general, there isn't a lot of hand-holding. If you know what you are doing and just need the software end of it, it's excellent.
