Now how do I get my family data from ancestry.com into Legacy? Is there a way to create the GEDCOM file without purchasing the Family Tree Maker product that they sell?

Also a funtionality question; currently in ancestry I have 1 tree but I want to create smaller "branches" in Legacy by different surnames with some kind of 'link' at the appropriate relationship. Is this the best way to go as I grow my database (I only have about 500 people right now)?

Will appreciate any/all advice :-)

Thanks, Dawn

Source citations with SourceWriter--designating page/sheet numbers in census

Hello all,

I use Legacy 7 Standard Edition, and was wondering if some fellow users could offer their feedback on this. When entering citation data into the SourceWriter for census records, there is both a field for page and sheet number. I noticed that on census records, particularly the 1900 which I cite often, the sheet number is the only one which occurs on every page; page numbers are on every other page. So, how would one designate a page which is "in between" numbers? I know there is also a letter on each page, A or B, but looking at Ancestry.com's citations, I see that they tack these letters onto the end of the sheet number, not the page number. So if the sheet number is twelve, and the page number is between 80 and 81, Ancestry writes 12B. Now, this seems rather inefficient to me; I would do it the other way around, 80B--but I don't know. In SourceWriter, the field for page number has an explanation in gray lettering which reads: "Type the page number and page number type, Ex: 273 (stamped)" Does this mean for a page in between numbers I ought to write "unstamped"?? Seems as if there should be a more intelligent way to write this type of thing. If anybody has had this problem and come up with a solution, I'd be glad to hear your input!

Thanks,

Val

Gedcom malfunction

I'm so frustrated! When I do a gedcom, even from my desktop to the laptop, Legacy distorts my events. It takes whatever I've entered into the "description" field and makes it the event. Example: Event is "occupation". I enter "farmer" in the description field. Now, when I look at my events list, I see "farmer" as an event! The person doesn't come up as having a listing under "occupation".

Another problem is when I took a friend's gedcom (Family Tree Maker), it distorted all his notes, entering them into the events field, making events from whole paragraphs, such as: "Fred and his family", "lived for 20 years", "in the same", "house on First Avenue". All these are events!

Help choosing software....Questions & advice for beginner

I may have started backwards but I'm looking for some help making my genealogy software selection. I'm trying to decide between Family Tree Maker 2008 and Legacy 6.0. It seems there might be a lot of bugs in the FTM 2008. Please share your issues if they are relevant for a beginner in genealogy. It seems that ancestry.com and FTM are related although I do NOT intend on buying the annual subscription to ancestry.com. Does one program over another offer better research help?

Because a relative had an account on myfamily.com, that is where I started my family tree on-line. Now that I have entered almost a 100 names, I feel the need to buy a program to have on my computer and print reports. I want a software program that will allow me to export the myfamily.com tree information that I already input and print a report. Because I am using the myfamily.com website, will it be more user friendly with FTM than Legacy software?

My Aunt has an older version of Family Tree Maker and I plan on importing data with a LOT of family notes.

Is there another program I should consider or are there free options?

Thanks in advance for any advice on my situation.

Legacy 7 - converting sources

I have tried converting a few sources using the new source writer, and have come across a problem.

Where I have previously used a website as a source, e.g. FreeBMD (UK birth, marriage and death registrations), I have entered the date accessed under 'date recorded', as there was no other specific place to enter it.

If I create a new source for FreeBMD, using the source writer, I now have a 'date accessed' and a 'date recorded' (which in most cases will be the same!).

If I combine the old and the new sources, I will have several hundred records which do not apparently have a date accessed.

I will have to go through each one individually to give it a 'date accessed'.

Is there an easy solution?

Margaret

Legacy 7.0 Import for FTM 2008

I am one of the loyal FTM 2006 and before users that started using FTM 2008. I have tried to work with FTM and been a beta tester and honestly they do not keep their users in the loop and it has become very upsetting. The problem of finding a new program is that I have hundreds of imported census images and family photographies not to mention about 100-200 Cemetery Photographies in my sources. Doing a GED export and import loses all of that. I am a Legacy Deluxe 6.0 Users, so I downloaded the charting 7.0 beta and was surprised to find out that it import directly FTM files.

Does anyone know if 7.0 Deluxe will also import FTM and FTM 2008 Files directly. I do noe expect it to be perfect but if I could get 95% of it then I would be willing to consider switching.

Thanks

Mike

I've switched from an old, old version of FamilyTreeMaker to Legacy. Certainly a more professional program. However, when adding a new name that was the same as an old one, FTM automatically asked if it was the same person. It was very convenient when creating massive, royal genealogy databases where you're not necessarily going to remember every name you put in. Is there a way to turn on this feature in Legacy, or am I out of luck?

Hi, I am currently looking into getting a hand held. Been researching PALM and HP iPAQ111. If I were to purchase the HP, I understand that Legacy and Pocket Genealogist can go hand to hand. I currently use FTM vs 16 and have done a lot of research and found the FTM has been a great program. Here's my questions- should I convert to Legacy and buy the HP and get Pocket Genealogist- or should I stay with FTM and GEDCOM to the HP? Has anyone used both Legacy and the Pocket Genealogist for research etc?
Thanks

Using the To-Do list for project management

I'm looking for a way to incorporate project management into Legacy, rather than keeping it in a separate program. Ideally, this would be using the To-Do list. However, I'm not sure how best to approach this.

Say that my high level goal is to obtain certified documentation for births, marriages and deaths of all my direct ancestors back to a particular point in time - let's say six generations.

At first glance, it seems this reasonably divides into a list of lower level goals for each individual direct ancestor:
* obtain birth certificate or equivalent
* obtain marriage certificate or equivalent
* obtain death certificate or equivalent

Then, each of these goals can be sub-divided into appropriate tasks. This is where the To-Do list seems to come in. However, the drawback seems to be the tasks in the To-Do list can't be linked to each other as prerequisites.

For example, in order to obtain my (deceased) paternal grandmother's long form birth certificate, I need to:
i. learn her name at death
ii. learn her date and place of death
iii. apply for her death certificate using (i) and (ii)
iv. learn her name at birth
v. learn her parents' names (including her mother's maiden name)
vi. learn her date and place of birth
vii. obtain written consent from her next of kin
viii. apply for her birth certificate using (iii) as proof of death, (vii) as proof of right of access, and (iv), (v) and (vi) as identification of the correct individual

Each of these might be sub-divided into smaller tasks - correspondence with a relative, searching for an obit, checking parish records, etc.

Without being able to link these tasks together, I could spend too much time looking at tasks that are on hold while waiting for other tasks to be completed.

On the other hand, I could create one big task for each individual and list a number of steps in it. This seems a little backwards.

I'm brand new to Legacy (using v6.0 Deluxe). Am I looking at this the wrong way? Is there a better approach?

Locations - Best Practices vs. Geo Locations List

Maybe I'm being a little obsessive about this, but I want to follow the practice of using the name of a place as it was at the time of the event YET I also want to take advantage of the Geo Locations List.

Is there was a way to create multiple entries on my Master Location List, each for a particular "lifespan" of the name, BUT which all map to a single Geo Location List entry? For example, the modern town of Dover (which isn't on the Geo Locations List, anyway) has only existed under it's current "address":

Dover, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

since December 6, 2001. However, it has also been:

Dover, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, Canada
Wellington, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, Canada
Wellington, Bonavista Bay, Dominion of Newfoundland
Shoal Bay, Bonavista Bay, Dominion of Newfoundland

Also, the "Bonavista Bay" isn't a civil partition, but a geographic one that is used when needed to distinguish between towns of the same name or to locate a little known community. I've been using it as the equivalent of a U.S. "county". The only problem is some locations don't have an equivalent region name (e.g. newer inland communities).

I guess I can just manually add each different naming pattern, with coordinates, to the Master Locations List with notes about its different names.

Questions about Legacy, Notes & Sources

I've recently decided to start using Legacy and I'm having difficulty figuring out a couple of things regarding Notes. I've used PAF for over ten years, and used the Notes section regularly to incorporation transcriptions from pensions, wills & obituaries, as well as stories that family members told me about the person. When viewing Census records, I also put the records into the Head of Household's Notes section, describing the person, what they did for a living at the time, how old he/she was, and the members of his/her family living in the home.

What is the proper way to add this information for Legacy? It appears to me that Legacy is a much more powerful program than PAF, and I want to take full advantage of putting information in the proper places for purposes of creating reports and books, but I can't seem to get a grip on where I should be putting notes like obituaries. Can you guys share some tips regarding what you do?

I'm also having some difficulty figuring out how to add all the source information I need. I've made a commitment to go through my files and include source information for anyone I don't have it listed from my early days when I didn't really understand what I was doing. I understand (mostly) how to enter a source when I'm looking at the document or a copy of the document - When I pull an obituary off of Newspaper Archives, for example, I include the name of the newspaper, the location of the newspaper, the date and the page number. What do I put for Repository, though? If I've saved a copy of the obituary, am I the repository? Or do I list the URL of the actual page of the newspaper? When I'm listing census records that I've pulled off of Ancestry, is Ancestry the Repository?

Any suggestions will be appreciated - I know there's going to be a learning curve with changing software, but I don't want to make some of the mistakes I've made in the past.

Thanks a lot!

Mariah Felty Brazil

There is a color and text box button on the dialog that doesn't seem to have any effect. If there is a secret way to print an actual chart, please let me know what it is.

Thank you.

Uploading info from Legacy 6.0 to Ancestry Personal Family Tree

Before I upload my family tree to the Ancestry personal member tree site I'm curious about how much info is uploaded. Will the upload include all the personal notes that I might have on an individual. At this time some of my notes are a collection of personal information that I don't want exposed until I have them completely verified, etc and I don't want to have to go in and edit each person after I do an upload. I know info can be changed/deleted etc but I'd rather it not be there until I'm ready to put it there. I can't seem to find this anwsere in the Help area. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Any suggestions anyone?

I don't want all events printing out, or appearing in descendant reports, etc.

I now realise I can make events private, but is their anyway of doing this en masse, rather than check each event out individually?

E.g. I would like to retain census information in reports, but not necessarily other events I have created, such as biography for individuals, giving timeline of events - this is too much duplication when several of the same family have their own.

Can I customise it any way that all 'Biography' events are private, or will I have to go through individually?

Margaret

My ahf. report or ancestry report is numbered all wrong. My daughter is listed as 1, and both her father AND I as number 2. Is this because I started with myself and then added them?

Is there a way to regroup this or fix it without starting over? I'm new to Legacy and want to use this numbering system with my paper file system.

I don't want to have to start all over and readd all of the data. Sometime back, dunno when, evidently keyed new info into desktop machine first.

I want to be able to compare the two files side by side and have the program advance to the various differences so that I can merge them all back into one file.

This has probably been asked and answered many times but hope someone can describe it in detail.

Thanks.
Help! 'Individual's Information' Screen Icons Keep Disappearing!

What is happening?! I tried to edit a person's info, and when their "Individual's Information" screen came up, I could see the usual icons across the top (the LDS temple, Homes, Notes, etc.) but only for a micro-second before they all flashed off. The only thing remaining, but in a grayed-out state yet accessible, was the LDS temple icon. Everything else instantly disappears. I've logged off and tried again. Same results regardless of individual I try to edit through those icons - icons are viewable for a split second then disappear. This has never happened to me before. I just wanted to change something in Notes. Any explanation?? Mary Wilson

Legacy intellishare numbers problem

I am trying to use intellishare to co-ordinate with my father...but it isn't working. I have a file where everyone (or a large number of people) all have the same intellishare number before I begin. I know this because if I intellishare merge with my own file I get 200,000 or so duplicates... intellishare thinks that each person is a duplicate with every other person. This is before I make a copy, change something and then import that and then do intellimerge. When I do that it is worse. I have tried exporting to gedcom and re-importing, but as I understand it you not import gedcom id's into the intellishare number... for what ever reason this doesn't help. Isn't there an option to re-set all the numbers? If I could get unique numbers into my file then I could start sharing things with my father.

please help

I am new at Legacy 6 and love it!. I was a FTM user. I was wondering if there is a way to edit the details that are with the master source. I found where I could bring up a source master list and I am able to fix my master sources. What I am looking for is the same type of list that can be edited for the details of the master source.
Example of what I would like it for is if I put in the detail section "vol 23 pg 46" and on others I might have put in "volume 23 page 46". Now I want to go back and make the details more consistant.
I hope there is a way to do this.
Thanks
Debbie

Big problem (for me) with Legacy

I found a really bad glitch in Legacy, and that will make it unusable for me (but not for everyone). When importing data from the "notes" section of FTM, because the message boxes are different widths in the two programs, Legacy separates words that occur at the end of the line (in the Legacy program). My family file has numerous notes; in fact, that's the best thing about my data.

Here is an example, the first paragraph of my notes about William the Conqueror, as it appeared in Legacy:

"General Notes: William, the illegitimate son of the Duke of Normandy, spent his first s ix years with his mother in Falaise and received the duchy of Normandy up on his father's death in 1035. A council consisting of noblemen and Willia m's appointed guardians ruled Normandy but ducal authority waned under t he Normans' violent nature and the province was wracked with assassinati on and revolt for twelve years. In 1047, William reasserted himself in t he eastern Norman regions and, with the aid of France's King Henry I, crus hed the rebelling barons. He spent the next several years consolidating h is strength on the continent through marriage, diplomacy, war and savage i ntimidation. By 1066, Normandy was in a position of virtual independence f rom William's feudal lord, Henry I of France and the disputed successi on in England offered William an opportunity for invasion."

I am hoping that Legacy's version 7 will have fixed this, but I really don't expect that.
Best practice for location format?

I'm unsure what the best practice is for entering locations in a database that incorporates many countries whose location naming schemes differ.

For example, most US locations have 4 components: city, county, state, country (e.g., "Claremont, Los Angeles, California, USA") If I don't know the city, but I do know the county, state, and country, I can use a comma to start the entry, as in ", Los Angeles, California, USA."

But how do I best enter European locations that only have three components, as far as I know? Antwerp, for example, would seem to be complete as "Antwerp, Antwerpen, Belgium." But when Legacy analyzes this entry, I think it will assume that the country is absent, because there are only three components to the entry.

How do "professional" genealogists handle this issue? Is there a slick way to designate the location components in Legacy?

New Legacy User

Just let everyone who uses Legacy the I enjoy using this program. When Family Tree Maker's new version changed I decided to try Legacy. I'm so glad this happened and I was forced to try something different. Legacy does rings around Family Tree Maker 2008 and after a short learning time, fell really good about the move. Love the Search the internet and created some search strings for all my search locations. Works great.
P.S. If you have a Ancestry subscription that includes One World Family Trees, they started to update them after many years of neglect. My last updated One World Tree was 2002 and recently it updated to Sep 2007. Its finally up to date and in synch with Ancestry World Tree's and Roots World Connect Trees, which all are shared from Roots Web and used for all three Trees. Again I love Legacy and I'm very happy with the results.

How to enter 'possible' parentage

Hoping someone can help me.

I have traced my Barker ancestors with the help of other researchers as far as one John Barker, who married in 1634/35, Lancing, Sussex, England and had several children in Broadwater, Sussex. Several further generations lived in Broadwater.

So, John probably born before c 1613, possibly in Sussex
Recent search of Broadwater Parish Registers has found a John Barker, baptised 1608 in Broadwater, father William. Also a William Barker baptised 1566, father Thomas.

A working assumption, with no likelihood of proof or anything to support it, would be that Thomas Barker was grandfather and William was father of 'my' John Barker.

What is the best way of entering this in Legacy?

1)To go just back to John, add something in Notes or Research about possible ancestors?

2)To add William and Thomas as father and grandfather with notes to explain lack of surety?

3)Or .....?

Margaret
I forget the exact text of the message but it seems the gedcom I'm trying to import is too large. When I split it by hand (which leads to other errors, of course), Legacy processes the individual just fine on which it had previously errored.

GedSplit no longer seems available. Does anyone know of a way to split a GEDCOM? Barring that, does anyone know of a way to make Legacy import a larger file?

The gedcom I'm trying to import as 46K+ individuals. I'm unlikley to need all these people, of course, but wanted to import the gedcom to make searching easier.

Using Legacy on 2 computers

I am currently using Legacy Deluxe 6.0 (upgraded from 4 to 5 to 6). I read a few posts regarding using Legacy on 2 computers, PC and laptop. My situation is slightly different in that due to a family medical situation, I will be away from my home PC for the next 6 months. I have access to an old PC and would like to access my genealogy data just to answer questions from fellow researchers. Since I do not plan to add any data to the Legacy files, I am reluctant to shell out double the money to keep 2 Deluxe subscriptions running.
To those folks that use Legacy on 2 computers, did you purchase 2 deluxe versions or are you using one deluxe and one free standard? If so, how is that working?
I do not know if Legacy allows a single deluxe subscription to be downloaded to more than one computer.
Regards, Jane Tripp

I have Windows Vista and Office 2007 on my desktop computer. Recently, I purchased and downloaded Legacy Family Tree 6.0 Deluxe software. I installed it and that seemed to go fine but I can't open the sample database. I can create a new database but can't import into it or enter data at all. My Legacy software just opens and sits there with all icons except Internet and Exit grayed out. Has anyone ever experienced this type of problem? I really could use some help. It seems like a nice program. I was able to install it on my XP laptop with no problem.

Group Sheet - remove extra lines

I would like to print group sheets for everyone in my database without wide gaps between each person. For instance; if a person in my database has 1 child then the data pertaining to this person is housed on the first third of the page, there is then a forced page break and the next person starts on a new page. I want to find a way to stop this from happening so that the next person/family will start a couple of lines after. Does anyone know a work-around for this?
Under the Options for Family Group Records/Format there is an option to remove all blank lines. I don't know what this does but it doesn't remove the blank lines between group sheets.
Thank you,
Judy

My grandmother has 1901 census information for herself, which I would like to see in the report, but also has census reports from 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 again for both her parents.
Ends up with 1901 census 3 times, and 1891 census twice as duplicates, plus for good measure, 1901 census report for her husband's mother!!

Is there any way of excluding this, other than by hand editing each report?

Margaret

Maiden Name vs Married

When I switched to Legacy, something went wrong when I imported my old GED file.

When I visit the Legacy INDEX Tab,I only see maiden names for my listed females. Before, I could view Married/Maiden names. Example: "Married/Maiden, Mary Jane" Legacy instructions do not address how to deal with this matter.

Currently, I have gone to the Index Tab, double-clicked on the female's name and added her married name in front of her maiden name, using a "/" to separate the 2 names (like the above example). The Index now looks OK, but I wondering if there is something else that I should be doing instead - I have 900 records to change...

I notice that the PEDIGREE Tab now shows the names as being "Mary Jane Married/Maiden." I guess that's OK.

It really looks like the Index Tab should have an additional column titled Maiden Name, but it doesn't.

Got any ideas?

Paul Kankula, Seneca, SC
kankula@bellsouth.net
about decided to get Legacy gold

I have already ordered FTM (not yet received), but after reading some of this discussion board, I am thinking Legacy would be a superior choice.

I believe a large user base is vital to ensure continued support. But I do not want to sacrifice advanced database functions just to get a larger user base.

I was once very computer literate, and would like to have features that I doubt any package would include entirely. I wrote my own genealogy software 20+ years ago in a DOS-based REVELATION database. I am still able to run that under Windows, but do not have any of the Windows tools (e.g. use of a mouse). I never did write my own code to export GEDCOM files. I have 2900 persons, 1100 couples, 4400 events and 800 locations in my database. I have already loaded all of that into Excel spreadsheets to facilitate the transfer. What is the best way to load data from the Excel spreadheets?

William Crump

I just downloaded Legacy 6 (6.0.0.110), and am having an issue with reporting not displaying the correct photo. On a parent's page where it lists their children beneath, it lists the correct photo for the parent, but displays photos of the child's spouse instead of the child. Has anyone seen this?

I am trying to create a file with only certain people in it and I am having trouble. When I started using Legacy, I started a file with myself and my husband and have been adding to that. Now my mother would like a GEDCOM of my side of the family. She does not need all my husband's ancestors. When I created a focus group and then a file starting with my mother, for some reason it seems like all the names from my entire file are on the name list, rather than just the ones in the focus group. When I open the file, though, they are not all showing and as a matter of fact it doesn't even show my father or any of my parents children. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to create a file with only certain people or does it always include everyone?
Thank you,
Nancy

using legacy for a family organization

I am part of a genealogy work group for a large family organization. We are currently looking at a number of different software programs for our genealogical data.
Our emigrant ancestor had eight sons and 2 daughters and the society has collected information, mostly on the sons, from 1630's through the 8th generation. They published books including the first 7 generations. However, our problem is is. The individual who was primarily responsible for this vast undertaking did not use a recognized format. He began with Brothers Keeper and then imported everything into Word documents and literally hand typed all the notes and sources. We are currently looking at different software options that can handle an undertaking of this problem. I have personally extracted the Brothers Keeper's file in FTM and although there were some problems it came through fairly intact. Short of reentering all of the notes and sources from the original books we are unsure of how to get the notes and sources into a new file.

I believe Legacy to be our program of choice due to its user friendly status and the other features I have seen but need to convince the rest of the group of this. We currently have approximately 100000 individuals in the published materials with plans to go forward with the 8th generation which would effectively double this number with plans to continue. While the first 7 generations have been published in 4 books we are also looking at publishing separate volumes for each of the 8 sons, keeping the entire file entact.

If anyone has any thoughts on this I would welcome any and all comments.

Thanks,

Nancy

Customising Addresses

The address function in Legacy is extremely useful but not designed for either modern or ancient Scottish addresses. The former need slightly different line descriptions, the latter space for a parish, ideally searchable. anyone know whether it is possible to customise the input screen?

Is there a problem with the Millennia homepage? Or is it me and my computer? I have been a Legacy user for years (now using Legacy 5 deluxe) and this is the first time that I cannot reach the site to either check for updates or browse around. All I get is an "unavailable" page
Victoria Turner

Whilst I have scanned photos to my Legacy file I would also like to include images of a person’s/family’s relevant Census pages with a link from that individual. (Census pages are currently saved as .jpg files on a separate drive from my Legacy file). The question is how can a do that?

Grateful for any advice.

Regards

Andy Claxton
Legacy 5.0: Importing Sources question

Okay, I've decided to give Legacy a try. But I have to say, this program has some of the worst help documentation of any software. A lot of it is very unclear and assumes the user understands software jargon that isn't clearly defined. :(

Can someone help me understand about the sourcing options when importing a file? I am trying to import my gedcom. On the gedcom import window, in the Autosource options, I do not understand what the implications of each option are.

Simply put, here is what I want: I am importing a gedcom file created from my Family Tree Maker 2005. In Legacy, I would simply like for the sources I entered in FTM and exported with the gedcom to remain where I entered them -- that is, I want my sources to remain attached to the data (birth, census, etc) that I entered them for.

If I understand the autosource options, what I want is just the Add Source To All Incoming Fields That Have Information. I think. But then it wants me to select master sources, and I have no idea what that's all about.

Can someone help me figure out what options I should be selecting there so I can just get the sources I have where they belong when Legacy imports my gedcom?

I am a relatively new user of Legacy, and I have decided to create eight family files in Legacy, one file for each of my great-grandparents. I would like to know what other Legacy users experience has been. How many family files did you create? Did this work well for you? What do you recommend? Any advice that you can give will be much appreciated.

Incorrect # of Individuals/Surnames etc

I just started using Legacy, copying all my old files from Family Tree Maker.

When I checked the family file information in Legacy, it states I only have 38 individuals, and 19 familys. I have over 1000. They are all there, but just not being counted. At first I thought It might just be the number I have added since using Legacy, but that isn't right either.

When I go to my name list, everyone is there, over 1000, but on the top it says their are 38 individuals.

When I first converted I was just using the basic Legacy Edition, at that time I know all my individuals transferred fine, and I think I had a correct number. Since then I have upgraded to the Deluxe Edition..Do I have a something set wrong?

Thanks for any help.

Marriage Sequence in Reports

I'm having difficulty with the Descendant Book Report and would appreciate some help . . .

Hugh Malcolm m. Unk Eddy in 1812. She d. 1821 and he married (2nd) Eliza Bigelow in 1822. The Descendant Book Report first shows the marriage to Eliza (plus children) and then says he "next married Unknown Eddy," which is backwards.

I can't seem to get the marriages switched around in the report. Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to do to straighten this out?

Up to now I have not used a computer programme for my genealogy - just paper records. I am wondering if anyone would care to offer an opinion as to which is better PAF or Legacy - and if so why?

I now have a palm pilot and want to be able to use this when going places to do research - I know you can programmes for the palm which will take the records of either so I think it is really down to usage on the main pc.

Thanks

Hi -

I'm new to the Legacy program and have come upon a situation that I'm not sure how to enter into the program.

I have 3 half-siblings with our mother being the common parent. She divorced their father and married my father. He then adopted the 3 children and their last names were changed to my dad's last name. What is the best way to enter these 3 children into the Legacy program? Which last name do I use for the 3 children - their birth name or their adopted name? What else do I need to do?

Thanks!
Patti

I've been shopping around the last few days for a software to use as my primary genealogy program and found I feel more comfortable using Legacy.

The problem I have, is that I have a large database of my grandmother's ancestors and another big one with my grandfather's ancestors. What I can't figure out is how to merge the two files into one database.

Does anyone know if Legacy will do this or will I have to get a second software program to do the merge?

Thanks...Susan
