Need Advice on TMG and Windows XP

I just got a new computer running Windows XP. I was using TMG Gold Edition version 4.0 on my old computer -- or trying to use it, I should say. The computer (running Windows ME) crashed every time I opened the program! I don't know whether that was because of the enormous amount of information I had entered into it, or what.
I hate to be unable to access all the information I have entered, to say nothing of all the hours I spent entering it! I really like the program, but it has become useless.
Should I even try to install it on the new computer? I have read that Windows XP doesn't handle 16 bit programs very well.
What about upgrading to the latest version? Is it any better? Is it also a 16 bit program? Would I get a discount on it? I've only had version 4 for about 18 months, I think.
If I do get the latest version, I wouldn't have to install my current version before I installed the latest one, would I?
As you can see, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers! If I gave up genealogy, I might have time to learn something about them!
Thanks,
Carol
