The way I've heard the story is that no new upgrades to PAF are forthcoming, so the program that's available now is the end of the line.
I'm assuming that somewhere along the line even the current version will be pulled from the web site, but that's just a guess on my part. I just installed PAF Companion 5.1.5 (I think that's the version number; it's one back from what's currently offered on the web site) on my wife's laptop that's running Windows Vista, and it turns out the help file system is unsupported. There is a patch that can be downloaded from Microsoft that restores that functionality, but it's another bump in the road to getting things working properly. There's no problem with Windows XP.
I suspect that some time in the future, PAF will no longer be compatible with the latest version of Windows and that will be the end of it, just like you can no longer get a Mac version.
PAF is based on an older version of Ancestral Quest, so you might want to take a look at that program. The latest version is Vista compatible and can read PAF files.
Family Tree Magazine did a comparison of Windows genealogy programs one issue back, and the latest issue does the same for Mac programs, so take a look at that for other recommendations.
