The obituary for my ancestor states "He was on board the unfortunate steamer which was burned on the Mississippi River on its upward passage with returning Union soldiers, when many lives were lost." My ancestor was Jonathan Bisher (1811-1887) of Highland Co. Ohio. He served in the 24th OVI and the 2nd Ohio Cavalry, He was a prisoner at Andersonville. He survived the Sultana tragedy and lived out his life at the Dayton's Soldier Home.
