I am searching for information on John T. Alexander who was on the Sultana -- according to the government role he survived -- i have proof that he did not with pension papers that were awarded to my gg-grandmother and g-grandmother who was only 8 at the time of his death. I would like to find out something about the Alexander family -- not sure where he was from -- I know they lived in the Bartholomew County, Indiana area. I belong to the Remember the Sultana group that will be meeting at the Andersonville prision area this April.

My name is Mark Willoughby, I live here in Cincinnati and have researched The Sultana now for four years for The History Channel. I am very interested in the construction of The Sultana here in Cincinnati ..... I believe I know what The Sultana looked like inside and know what the furnishings looked like. Lincoln's death and 660,000 killed during The Civil War overshadowed The Sultana disaster ...... the hell the men went through at Cahaba and Andersonville then The Sultana explosion ...... how sad ........
The book "Disaster on the Mississippi" by Gene Salecker (1996) has a wonderful list of all passengers on the ill-fated Sultana that he verified himself. The troops are divided by state, regiment and name.

For the 95th Ohio, there's a "Van Horn, Burriss" Private, Co. F, who survived and was sent to Soldier's Hospital in Memphis. I would say this is most likely your ancestor, James.

The other brother, Authur, died in April 1864 so it was impossible that he was on the Sultana since it exploded on April 27, 1865.

Norman Shaw, Founder, The Sultana Association, Knoxville, TN shawclan4@bellsouth.net

Can you confirm that brothers James Burris VanHorn and Arthur J. VanHorn were on board? Supposedly both survived, but Arthur died in Tennessee at a veterans hospital of smallpox.

James was born abt 1831 and died:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=83...

Arthur was born abt 1833 and died:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=41...;

Both signed up for the service on the same day... not much is known about Arthur's service but several records exist for James.

Any additional information would be helpful if it exists.

Cindy Thredgold

comments regarding this statement

The following statement appeated in the Chattanooga on line paper. It was written by Chuck Hamilton. I have never heard anything about this. Does anyone out there know any further details. I have written to ChucK Hamilton and asked his source. Phebe Morgan phebem@comcast.net

On 27 April 1865, Confederate Secret Service operative Robert Louden used a coal torpedo (a bomb made to look like a lump of coal) to sink the SS Sultana on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee, killing 1600-1800 of its 2400 passengers, most of them former POW’s from the Union Army. It remains the biggest maritime disaster in U.S. history and arguably the largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil prior to 9/11/2001.

Sultana Survivor, Jonathan Bisher, Ohio

The obituary for my ancestor states "He was on board the unfortunate steamer which was burned on the Mississippi River on its upward passage with returning Union soldiers, when many lives were lost." My ancestor was Jonathan Bisher (1811-1887) of Highland Co. Ohio. He served in the 24th OVI and the 2nd Ohio Cavalry, He was a prisoner at Andersonville. He survived the Sultana tragedy and lived out his life at the Dayton's Soldier Home.

~Carley Bisher Worth
carleyworth@ucla.edu
Hello!

I have some information which may be of help.

An excellent source to locate soldiers who were on the Sultana and their fate is the Appendix of the book Disaster on the Mississippi: The Sultana Explosion, April 27, 1865 by Gene Salecker (1996).

Checking the Mich. troops, I find one Alonzo Smith, 22nd Mich. Inf., Co. K, Sgt., who died.

From reading Salecker's book and an earlier one in 1992 by Jerry Potter called Sultana Tragedy (1992) I know that hundreds of bodies were never recovered from the Miss. River. Scores more washed up on shore down river but had no identification.

Lastly, out of the 800 initial survivors from being pulled out of the river, 300 died in Memphis hospitals so their identity was known. These were first buried in a local cemetery but later transferred to the National Cemetery in Memphis. However, many names were lost during the transfer when the names chalked on the caskets were washed off during a rainstorm during the transport process.

From this information, I would think the third Alonzo in your list is your man. He could have died on the Sultana with no record of his burial since 1) his body was never recovered 2) body recovered with no identity 3) survived the initial disaster but later died in a Memphis hospital but was one of those who names was washed off the casket during the rain storm.

The Sultana Association will hold its 23rd reunion in Mansfield, Ohio, April 23rd and 24th, 2011. Contact me if you would like more information.

Norman Shaw, Founder, Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends

I came across your message because I was doing a search for the roster of Co. K, 22nd Infantry, MI. Your Alonzo was in the same unit as my great grandfather, who died of disease in the Civil War after being incarcerated from Andersonville Prison. He was sent to an army hospital in Maryland after being paroled out of Andersonville, but died there and was buried there, so I know how hard it is to find out where they are buried if they never made it home. A cousin provided me with a copy of his military records and that told me where he was buried. Perhaps if you were able to get Alonzo's they would say where he is buried. That one Alonzo's death record has a different death date so probably it's not yours. Sultana websites say that not all the bodies were recovered. Most of the ones that were recovered were buried in Memphis National Cemetery. They were pulling bodies out of the water for a week or two after the accident. I thought maybe Alonzo's body floated down the river and was found and buried in that place I sent you. They may not have known when he died and put the find date as a death date--or I thought he may have lived longer than thought. That's only a slim possibility. I noticed at the bottom of the information in your post that the army said he survived the Sultana explosion. Maybe he did for a while, but died later from the burns. Can you imagine having to travel in filthy conditions with 1st degree burns all over your body. Even if he survived the explosion the chances of making it home alive were probably next to nothing. I'll keep my eye out for your Alonzo.

I'm wondering if this is your Alonzo K Smith. Once website on the Sultana explosion said many of the dead were buried in Memphis National Cemetery but your Alonzo wasn't there. In doing a search on the National Cemeteries website at http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1?e=24ec507... I found this Alonzo Smith, but if it is your Alonzo, he would have lived almost a month after the explosion:
SMITH, ALONZO
PVT US ARMY
CIVIL WAR
DATE OF DEATH: 06/02/1865
BURIED AT: SECTION 45 SITE 1394
JEFFERSON BARRACKS NATIONAL CEMETERY
2900 SHERIDAN ROAD ST.
Hi Mr. Davis,

My name is Leann McElhaney and I believe that my 4th great grandfather, Bartley R. McMurray (mispelled Bartly R. McMurray or Bartly Russell McMurray) of Blount County, Tennessee, was on the Sultana. Family oral history has been told that he survived, although he could not swim, by hanging on to a dead animal that was floating in the water (although after reading many accounts I believe it was more likely a dead person as I have not seen in any accounts that there were animals on board).

Thanks so much for your time,
Leann McElhaney

Mark - A couple of years ago I ran across references to one or more of my family names in reference to the Sultana - some survived and some were lost & I think at least one of the family names included brothers (lost and survived). I can't remember the family names though.

Looking for anyone from Alabama, specifically Etowah, Blount, Marshall, DeKalb, St. Clair Counties. Surnames include: Battles, Brothers, Conn, Galloway, Gilliland, Hopper, Lee, and Morton. I am especially inclined to believe it was the Battles line. I would suspect either these were civilians or workers, as they were likely from a family of Confederates vs. Union soldiers.

If it's not too much trouble, could you check those names or locations?

Thanks!
Briana Felch

Hello Mark, I am researching a soldier who is buried in Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu. His name, as recorded on his tombstone, is James Devlin. Other sources list him as James Develin or James Denver. Devlin appears to have served in the 1st Delaware Infantry and in the (Union) 10th Tennessee Cavalry. The same source that puts him in the 10th Cavalry states that he was a Sultana survivor. Does he appear in the appendices to the Salecker book on the Sultana disaster?

Thanks,
Richard Griffin
hoplite@earthlink.net

Thanks so much for this. Four brothers fought in the Civil war James, George W Phenice (should also be records for him, they are listed on this site...same company taken to Andersonville with James but was taken Oct 1864 to Milledgeville (where strangely he was allowed to vote in presidential election..then to Florida and finally paroled for exchange in Florence Ala.) John and William also brother in civil war...amazingly they all survived. Lewis Phenicie was a first cousin. Thanks again
Lee Ann Chapman

Thanks for offerning Mark

My great great James Madison Phenicie was a survivor, would you mind checking if he is on the list? We have his transfer docs from Andersonville, in those he is listed as J.M. Phenicie, corporal, Ill regiment, however he was actually with the Indiana volunteers. We have documents that he was a survivor, curious if he is on the list you have. Phenicie is one of the rarest and unusual names so sometimes the spelling is butchered Finnessy etc.
thanks
Lee Ann

Dear Leeann1546; as well as anyone interested in the Sultana shipwreck.
My name is Louis Intres, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Heritage Studies Department of Arkansas State University. I joined this organization a year ago and attended the meeting in Knoxville, Tn. I am presently working on a project to set up an archive in the Arkansas state University Library and Museum on the campus in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Our campus is located only 45 miles from the location where the Sultana sank in the Mississippi river. We are setting up a permanent research archive for the men who were on the Sultana.
It is our hope and task to collect documents and stories about each and every man, woman and child aboard the Sultana on thet fateful voyage. I am asking each family to provide me with photocopies of their research and all documents relating to their ancestors so that we can archive them here at our University. We would like to establish one place where researchers, historians and families can come to for all the possible information about the ship and those aboard.
You may give your historical documents to me at the annual meeting in Chattanooga, in April< or send them to me at: Louis Intres, Department of Heritage Studies,P.O.Box 1690, State University Arkansas, 72467.
I will be attending the annual meeting in Chattanooga and will arrive on Thursday night. I will be available all day on Friday to interview you about your ancestor. I hope that many of you will look me up at the hotel and allow me to speak with you about your family history and its relationship to the Sultana.
You do not lose control of the information and are only sharing it with academics, scholars and researchers who wish to write about their histories.
I look forward to meetin many new friends and receiving your family's stories.

Sincerely;
Louis Intres
Hi
I don't know if you are still collecting data. My great great grandfather was on the Sultana. James Madison Phenicie was being exchanged as a prisoner from Andersonville(records can be obtained on this cite-although wrongly shows him from Ill, he was with the Indiana volunteers captured in Battle of Shiloh Nov 1863) he was released April 1865 and boarded the Sultana in New Orleans. I have my great aunts detailed essay she wrote on it from his own words in about 1905. He describes the horror in great detail. He managed to survive by clinging to a board, spent the night in water and in the morning floated by a tree he managed to grab.

Sorry it has taken be so long to get back to this post. Yes I would love a copy of "The Civil War Experiences of James J. Brock," written by Samuel D. Brock. Samuel is my husband's grandfather's father. Contact me at bkbrock@gmail.com and I will give you an address to send it to. I also have a picture of James's headstone if you are interested. I don't know how detailed your collection is. Also, I would love information on Catherine Harper from OR. You can send it to me at the email address above. Thank you so much for contacting me.

New Book on Sultana

Hello All: I am Gene Eric Salecker, the author of the 1996 book "Disaster on the Mississippi: The Sultana Explosion April 27, 1865." After 12 years, I believe that it is time for a new book on the Sultana. Over the past 25-30 years I have compiled more that 300 accounts from survivors, witnesses, and rescuers from people connected to the Sultana. Many of the accounts were published in Chester D. Berry's 1892 book entitled "Loss of the Sultana and Reminiscences of Survivors." I am hoping to take the accounts that never made it to Berry's wonderful book and publish them in a new book, tentatively entitled, "Loss of the Sultana II."

If anyone has any first person accounts of the experiences of their Sultana ancestor - be it from letters, obituaries, pension records, newspapers, etc - now is the time to get them to me for inclusion in my upcoming book. I will be working on the manuscript this summer and would like them as soon as possible. ALSO - ANY COPIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS would be a blessing!

Also, please feel free to contact me to see if I have anything on your relative. Believe me, I have quite a bit of information on the Sultana people - both soldiers and civilians. Please contact me, I will see what I have and will let you know as soon as possible.

I can be reached at - g-salecker@neiu.edu or at:
Gene Eric Salecker
2526 N. Davisson ST.
River Grove, IL 60171-1710

Thanks to all in advance.

Hello: I have left a message with the Sultana Message Board but I was not certain that you would see it. Therefore, I have decided to contact you through this means. As for James Jefferson Brock, I have a 10 page account of his entitled, "The Civil War Experiences of James J. Brock," written by Samuel D. Brock, a relative.
