New Book on Sultana

Hello All: I am Gene Eric Salecker, the author of the 1996 book "Disaster on the Mississippi: The Sultana Explosion April 27, 1865." After 12 years, I believe that it is time for a new book on the Sultana. Over the past 25-30 years I have compiled more that 300 accounts from survivors, witnesses, and rescuers from people connected to the Sultana. Many of the accounts were published in Chester D. Berry's 1892 book entitled "Loss of the Sultana and Reminiscences of Survivors." I am hoping to take the accounts that never made it to Berry's wonderful book and publish them in a new book, tentatively entitled, "Loss of the Sultana II."

If anyone has any first person accounts of the experiences of their Sultana ancestor - be it from letters, obituaries, pension records, newspapers, etc - now is the time to get them to me for inclusion in my upcoming book. I will be working on the manuscript this summer and would like them as soon as possible. ALSO - ANY COPIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS would be a blessing!

Also, please feel free to contact me to see if I have anything on your relative. Believe me, I have quite a bit of information on the Sultana people - both soldiers and civilians. Please contact me, I will see what I have and will let you know as soon as possible.

I can be reached at - g-salecker@neiu.edu or at:
Gene Eric Salecker
2526 N. Davisson ST.
River Grove, IL 60171-1710

Thanks to all in advance.

Hello: I have left a message with the Sultana Message Board but I was not certain that you would see it. Therefore, I have decided to contact you through this means.
That's the one. My great grandfather , William Worley, was also in Co. K, but was not sent into Alabama to Sulphur Branch Trestle, where so many Union soldiers were captured, sent to Cahaba and later ended up on the Sultana.

The Potter book lists your great grandfather as surviving the Sultana disaster, so based on your reply the info is accurate. Can you share any of his other experiences with the regiment before the sinking and/or what he did after the war?

Many thanks for your reply,

Don Worley
I have some info, war and pensions records, for the most part, on four of my gg Uncles who joined the 3d Tennessee Cavalry (US), were captured by Forrest at Sulphur Branch Trestle and sent to prison at Cahaba. William Riley Kidd died of typhoid while at Cahaba. Lewis Milton Kidd, Alex Kidd, and James W. Kidd survived prison and were on the Sultana. James W. died on the Sultana, but Alex and Lewis Milton made it back to home in Maryvile TN. I have birth and death dates, a little info on their family, but no picures. Please let me know if you would like me to provide you info. There were two other Kidds in the 3rd TN who were cousins of my gg uncles.

David Kidd
History Channel - Sultana

I saw a show on the Steam Ship "Sultana" last night on the History Channel and I believe it was included as part of a show about the Civil War.
I had no idea about this terrible tragedy and they said that more lives were lost on this ship than on the Titanic.
They also said that a man named "Loudon" was most likely responsible for a terroristic type of attack on this ship by planting some sort of fake looking item made to look like a lump of coal that would have been shoveled into the burners. This fake lump of coal was filled with gun powder or some type of black powder and of course when the heat of the ovens hit it, it blew sky high.
This was a horrible tragedy, and one I had never heard of before but apparently these types of attacks on the steam ships were not uncommon during the Civil War.
I am in the process of writing a book on soldiers of the Civil war entitled "ONE MOMENT OF GLORY--A TRIBUTE TO OUR CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS OF EAST TENNESSEE". I do biographical sketches of soldiers of East Tennessee who were in the Civil War. So far I have over 200 pages of local soldiers and many photos. If you have a biographical sketch of a soldier who was in the Civil War, I would love to include him in the book. Or if you just have a name i can do the rest. Target publication in about a year. I would especially like to have photos of soldiers who were on the Sultana. My only goal is to give these men recognition for the sacrifice they made. This is a project I have devoted the last year to. Contributions are welcome; however, most of my profiles are self generated from Civil War rosters.

He never made it home though and no one in the family ever heard from him again and assumed he died at Andersonville.
He was born and lived in Kentucky up until he joined the war, one of his brothers (Leander) moved and lived in Poplar Bluff Missouri with his family about the same time.
Our line of thought is George possibly could have been on Sultana once he was released and headed to the stop at New Madrid (about 50 miles from Poplar Bluff)...
Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated.

Code No: 48090
Grave No: NOT BURIED AT ANDERSONVILLE
Last Name: WORLEY
First Name: GEORGE C.
Rank: PRIVATE
Company: H
Regiment: 2
State: KY
Branch of Service: CAVALRY
Date of Death:
Cause of Death:
Remarks:
Reference*: P 435 [432]
Place Captured: NEWNAN, GA
Date Captured: 7/30/1864
Alternate Names:
Status: SURVIVED ANDERSONVILLE
More Information
Available: NO

We have found several relatives in this search one which is in Scottland. We didn't find much information on Martha or the daughter she had with Hooper (Sarah) so whatever you could share would be wonderful.
My email is tbhuskey@bellsouth.net
Thanks

J W MILLIGAN

Crawfordsville Review
Jan 4, 1916 Tuesday

of Clarks Hill has just received word of the death of T. W. Milligan at his home in Netawaka, KS Thursday Dec 30, 1915 from hardening of the arteries. He was confined to his bed for three months and had been blind two years previous to his death. He was born at Prairieville, Indiana May 6, 1843. Accompanied by FM Lindsay; John E. Loveless and Charles Loveless he made an overland trip to Kansas leaving Clarks Hill in September 1869 with a two-horse covered wagon equipped for hunting. He located in Jackson County, KS where he has continued to reside. He enlisted in May 1861 when there was a call for 9--day Soldiers for the union. When his time of enlistment had expired, he returned home. When Co G, 20th Indiana formed soon after his return he was prevented from reenlisting by a severe attack of typhoid fever. He enlisted in Co. G 72nd Indiana 26 July 1862 and served until the close of the war. He was captured and confined in Libby prison one month and Andersonville for 12 months. He was on the Sultana when it was blown-up on the Mississippi River April 27, 1865 with 2000 soldiers on board and he floated 13 miles down the river on part of the wreckage. A short time after being rescued and taken to the hospital at Memphis he became unconscious and remained so several hours. He is survived by the widow, Amelia, a daughter Mary Stroud and two brothers, William Milligan of Kansas City and John W. of Clark's Hill. The deceased will be better known as "Buck" Milligan to some of the older residence of Clarks' Hill who knew him in youth. He lived an exemplary life and died rich in the esteem of all. The remains will be buried at Circleville Kansas Sunday.
East TN Sultana survivors Hooper/Hodges

Has anyone see the pension files for JAMES WILEY HODGES?
I placed an order for them with the National Archives only to learn the VA still has the files. It will require a Freedom of Information request for me to read the files.

What I am really interested in is any information in the files concerning the first husband of Mrs. James Wiley Hodges. She was the widow of JAMES HARVEY HOOPER, a fatality on the Sultana, while James Wiley Hodges was a survivor.
Both men were in 3rd TN Cav and had been at Cahaba. Hooper had been a sergeant in Company D while Hodges had been in Company F.
James Wiley Hodges became the guardian of Hooper's only child when he married Hooper's widow. Her testimony for her widow's pension and child's pension (Hooper pension records) indicates she had worked for Hodges's mother during the war. After the death of Hodges, she again applied for a widow's pension. I figure she may have made statements about her first husband's death when she made that second application.
So, if anyone studying the Sultana survivors has seen the pension files for James Wiley Hodges, could you tell me whether it is worth my taking the time for the FOA request to the VA for his pension documents?

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my message.

Unfortunately, I must not have made my intent clear - I am wondering specifically if anyone else has seen the Hodges file, and whether it is extensive enough - particularly regarding the wife - to merit my going through the FOA process. Getting the files via FOA can be both expensive and time-consuming.

I requested this Wiley Hodges file online. The response saying that the file was still with the VA is not sometihing unfamiliar to me - I've probably ordered more than sixty files over the years and I've had this happen with at least two other files. In both of those cases, the reason the file had not yet been turned over to the Archives was that the records continued into "recent" times (about WWII) because the veterans involved had remarried to very young women who outlived the veterans by many years. Thus, I assume some files were still active when the VA turned over the bulk of the Civil War pension files to the Archives. Some of these more recent files extend to several hundred pages, and paying per page copy charges on such files gets rather expensive.

My GGG Uncle, Bartley McMurray survived the Sultana disaster. He was a soldier in the 3rd TN Cavalry. He lived in Blount County and returned there at war's end. Bartley is buried in Eusebia Cemetery near Maryville, TN. I am looking for more information about him, but what intrigued me about your post was the list and book you mentioned. My husband's GG grandfather was also a survivor. His last name is Donohoe, but may have been spelled another way: Donahue, Donahoe, etc. He is buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany, NY, but we know little about him. he may have been listed as from NYC, and was most likely a prisoner from Andersonville, SC or another Confederate prison camp.Any information would be appreciated.

Beulah,
I just posted a story about my McCamishes. I also had a GGG Uncle Bartley McMurray, who survived the Sultana. He fought with the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. Legend has it that he somehow got to shore after the explosion even though he could not swim! He is buried in the Eusebia Cemetery near Maryville, TN. The McMurrays, along with the McTeers and Bogles were among the first white families to settle in what became Blount County (1786.) Recently, I discovered my husband's GG Grandfather was also aboard that fatal ship-a Federal soldier. He too survived, returning home to Albany, NY. Life is strange...

Message regarding Sargent John Cornwell Company A, 100th Ohio. John Cornwell was my Great, Great, Grand Uncle, by Marrage. His Wife Lindamine Calkins was my Great, Great, Grand Aunt. I am familiar with this family. My Great, Great Grandfather was Clark Lyman Calkins. This would be John Cornwell's Brother-in-Law. was bornJuly 11, 1837. He Married Linda Calkins on July 11, 1858. John enlisted in the Army, during the Civil War. He was captured on September 8, 1863 in Tenn, with 240 other soldiers, while guarding the railroad at Telford. He was taken to Andersonville Prison to be held until the end of the war. He died April 27th, 1865.
Lindamine Calkins Cornwell also had a brother that served during the Civil War. Her Brother, Augustus "Jesse" Calkins served with the 144th Ohio National Guard and was on duty at Wilmington, Delaware. After the War. Augustus was to be married. Friends and family were all gathered at the the home of Augustus' Parents (A.Elisha Calkins) in Pemberville, Ohio on the wedding day. Preperations were being made for the wedding, when the men decided to go out in the woods to cut some wood for the fires. They told Augustus to stay at the house and help the women, but he decided to Go out and help the other men Gather fire wood. Just as he entered the wood lot where the other men were, A tree they were cutting on fell and hit a spike in another tree. The spike flew through the air like a bullet and hit Augustus at the base of the head, killing him instantly, on his wedding day. My Great Great Grandfather, Clark Calkins, Lindamine's older brother was involved in the Copper-Head movement in Ohio. He and some other men enliste in the Confederate Army, and hopped a Train going down south. Just a few miles south of Perrysburg, Ohio, the train was wrecked, and Clark was badly injured. After a brief stay in the hospital, he was sent home. Best regards, Jack Shaw / jackoshaw6@earthlink.net

SULTANA DESCENDANTS REUNION - April 13th and 14th, 2007 in Athens, Alabama

Reunion is “open” to descendants of survivors and any one else interested in War Between the States history. Gene Salecker and Jerry Potter, the authors of the latest Sultana books, will be there.
Announcement by Norman Shaw below:
Come join us for our 2007 reunion held for the first time in Athens, AL. The primary reason to meet here is to visit the Union fort sites in Athens (Ft. Henderson) and Sulphur Branch Trestle where many Union soldiers were captured in the fall 1864 railroad raid by none other that Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Only one corner of Ft. Henderson remains, but the fortification at Sulphur Branch Trestle is well preserved with a modern home situated in the middle! However, we have very fortunate in that the owners have agreed to, even welcomed, a visit by our group to the interior (with some restrictions).

We also have the privilege of using some of the facilities of Athens State University for our events. The use of the Ballroom will be twofold: for the Friday evening talks with displays arranged around the room and for the Saturday evening banquet catered through the university. Something new has been added this year for Friday afternoon starting around 2:00 p.m.--a musical time of about 1.5 hours for singing, playing instruments, etc. to be held on the stage reserved at Athens State. Descendant Penny Lyle has volunteered to oversee the planning of this event so please contact her if you have something to offer and don't be shy. Remember, you will be amongst friends. Penny is the perfect person to take on this task as she teaches music in her home state of Florida. Some local talent may also be involved.

Again, we will have a tour on Saturday starting in the morning and ending late afternoon. Athens is not a large town so the trips between stops are short. We will commence with a short walking tour of Athens State conducted by one of it's history professors. Lunch will be at a local restaurant large enough to serve our group with each person ordering for himself/herself off the varied menu. Following our midday meal, we will travel a few miles north to reach Sulphur Branch Trestle which will be the conclusion but highlight of the tour. I am still working on the details of the tour but expect a good time.

The costs for the weekend will be amazingly low. Through my contact at Athens State (Debbi Kelley is an employee there. I went to high school with her husband, Mike, who has been to several of our reunions) there will be no cost for the use of the Ballroom and auditorium! I feel that school buses will adequately serve our purposes for the tour since the distances between stops are short and a bus coach may not make it up the steep hill at Sulphur Branch Trestle, let alone turn around there. I have reserved two school buses with a company in nearby Huntsville with the option to add another if needed. I estimate the charge per person will be $10.00 for a 48 passenger bus.

The Sat. banquet will only cost $14.95. I gave the menu in the last newsletter, but let me repeat it here: buffet of roast beef or grilled chicken with lemon and pepper, green beans, scalloped potatoes, salad, roll, tea or coffee, and dessert! (makes my month water just typing it!).

Lodging will be on your own. There are a variety of motels at the primary Athens exit (No. 351) off I-65. Here is a partial list: Best Western, Budget Inn, Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, and Town & Country. You might contact the local Chamber of Commerce at 256/232-2600 for more information. There are also a number of eating places at this location. As a side note, the nearest airport is at Huntsville, AL, only about 30 miles east of Athens if you want to fly in.

Let's now talk registration. The banquet and bus costs need to be prepaid for a total of $24.95. A check should be made out to me and mailed to me at P. O. Box 30372, Knoxville, TN, 37930. I will need contact information on you and any in your party and your ancestor's name, if any, and unit. You can enclose these facts with the check or e-mail me at nshawatty@hotmail.com.

Before I conclude, I need to invite everyone to attend my talk on the Sultana to be given to the Huntsville CW Roundtable on Thurs., April 12th (the day before our reunion starts) at the Elk's Lodge in Huntsville. A chicken buffet meal will be available for $7.50 starting at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting to begin at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge if you wish to skip the meal and only come for my presentation.

I think our record attendance was around 140 at our initial visit to Vicksburg. Let's see if we can surpass that number. Let me know if you have any questions or need further information or have suggestions
Norman Shaw nshawatty@hotmail.com.

Thank you for telling me, but yes I'd already been informed.

No e-mails are blocked... they just sit in a folder until I can decided if it's spam or not. :)

I didn't however, get an e-mail from you. My e-mail server must have just dropped you directly into the "known spam" folder. Odd.

James Jefferson Brock... Sultana survivor?

I'm looking to verify an ancestor of mine was on board the Sultana. Someone claims he was, but I can't find any books to verify that he was.

He was James Jefferson Brock, a union solider from Sevier Tn.

If anyone has any books on the Sultana, could someone see if he's listed anywhere?

Re: Sevier, Jefferson, Blount, and surrounding counties Sultana survivors

Beulah, my great, great grand father was in the 3rd TN Calvary. His name was Bartley McMurray. He was captured with his company by Nathan Bedford Forest at a railroad trestle. He was shipped to either Cahaba or Andersonville prison. When released he was on the Sultana. There is a picture of East TN survivors that appears on the web in many of the Sultana web sites. We have a family picture of him and recognized him in the attached photo. He is the gentleman in the first row far left seated with the cane. You can see a better version of this at http://sultanadisaster.com/photogs.htm I have his war records and some old newspaper articles that described his life. His father and uncle both fought in the Rev. War after coming over from Scotland.
