The data base doesn't allow me to enter middle names. Is this the way it is supposed to be? If I have erroneously data entered, I would like to go back and correct. Is there a way? Thanks

Middle names should be entered in the Given Name field after the "first" name.

John Thomas Smith would be entered
Given Name: John Thomas
Surname: Smith

Unfortunately, there is no way to correct keyed data you have already submitted, but it should be caught in arbitration (the next step). If you still have the set, you can go back to a previous image. Near the top left corner is a notation Image 5 of 10 (for example). Click on the left-facing arrow to the left of it to go back an image. Repeat until you are back at the image with keying you want to fix.

Vickie,

It may depend on the project, but usually middle names are entered with the given name.

If you've already submitted the image set, there's no way to go back to make corrections. If you're still working on the set, you can go back to the image and make the correction. There should be an indicator near the upper left hand corner of the screen that tells you what image number you're working on. To the left of that is an arrow you can click on to go back to previous images.

I hope this helped.

Thank you, Laurel, for replying. I tried several times to enter the middle name with the first and the system said that combination wasn't allowed. Since I'm so new, I didn't know whether or not to do F7, which I didn't. I wish I could go back. For future entering, should I do F7? I am enjoying this, but want to do it correctly.

Vickie,

Yes, you can F7 anything that isn't automatically accepted by the system, as long as you're sure that the spelling is correct, and that you're keying in the correct space. For example, I occasionally fail to tab across to the proper column, so that I'm inputting a surname into a field that's supposed to be a given name, and the system doesn't recognize it as correct. If it comes up as a field that needs correction, I have to look closely to figure out why a name that I know I've spelled correctly wasn't accepted, and that's when I realize that I have it in the wrong column. There are also times when my fingers get ahead of my brain, and I mistype a name. When the system considers it incorrect, I again have to look closely to figure out why a name I've typed several times before is suddenly not accepted. However, as long as you're not making errors such as those, it is OK to F7 anything else the system doesn't like. If you're wrong, it will be caught in arbitration.

One thing to add though, some keyers f7 EVERYTHING automatically (whether they need to or not) without really checking, defeating the purpose of the suggestion lists. Just check the entry and make sure it's correct before whacking the f7 key.

The things to really watch are the entries that will be repeated dozens of times on a page. One error multiplies many times.

In particular

Slave Owners' names (slave manifests)
Street names (Sands)
Surnames (Jacksonville and Sands)

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. The system didn't seem to want the middle name & I thought it should be in there. I'm glad I'm not the only one boo-booing. Back to the fun. I'll look for the image number in the upper left corner. Vickie

Thank you, I'm trying to look very carefully before I F7. When you mention entries being repeated; one day I was entering a naturalization record & the same name popped up several times in a row(like new docs). I thought the same document I had just entered came up several times in a row, so I just forwarded on to another record. Maybe this was several people with the same name, but I thought I hadn't finished the doc properly. I hope this makes sense!!
