Inserting a new name when you've missed one out also takes a looong time. If it's near the end of a section, adding it at the end and then moving it up is a lot faster. Best to check each screen's-worth as you key and not just leave it all to the end.

If you use my trick of keying all the names in one section and splitting into sections for towns at the end (to take advantage of the multiple acceptance of names like Dvd not in the menu), then do the sectioning working backwards from the end to reduce the number of records moved each time.

WAP need to investigate the reason for the slowth. As a software engineer, I recognise this as a classic case of testing only with a small number of entries and/or on a higher spec machine than most customers have. Rewinding to the first image of a multi-image set for checking also takes an annoying length of time.

Just one section - the instructions for City say "Key the Town or City which appears in uppercase letters at the top of the image or at the beginning of a list of names." So you would not key a city or town name that appears after someone's name.

As far as I know, you would key the repeated names since they are different people.

Hi,

Downloaded a set with the header Auckland Alphabetical Directory. It is an alphabetical list with Names and occupation as usual but then street address and town listed for every name. Town e.g's are Hmltn, Auc, Pokeno, Gisb, Howick, Whang Rural etc.

Do I just use one section headed Auckland (as I suspect) or a new section for each new town mentioned (would be at least a couple of hundred sections changing back and forward between towns).

Also there are many repeated names, obviously different people with differing occupations and different addresses (e.g. 5 different Wm Blake). Do I list all the names (in this case 5 lines of Wm Blake) or just one line and skip the repeats even though they are different people.

Many thanks

Tim Pearce

Some of you may have noticed a problem when loading review sets, or returning to edit keyed sets, that the program appears to freeze.

The instructions for entering the City state that if the image (i.e. page) header is of the form "... Towns Directory" (as this is) then the city names are in the body of the image, so I agree with Paul and would key City for the first names as [blank] (i.e. from the menu or press ctrl/B). WAP will fill in this field as a continuation from the previous page when they put the whole project together.

I think we've been told to ignore "Rural delivery" headers (and also suburbs and towns with no names), so follow Williams immediately by Aldridge in the same [blank] section.

Start a new section only when you reach a header like the "Russel, Auckland" one, which should be entered like that (without the quotes).

If you've already started a new section for Runciman, use the tool's [X] button to delete it and accept the offer to append the names you've typed to the first ([blank]) section.

Happy keying.

By the way, don't hold your breath waiting for someone to review your work. I put in a batch before Christmas that still hasn't been checked. And in the meantime those records are classed in your project dashboard as "needs improvement" (due to a software bug) - and this drags down your average.

This is the first one I have seen like this, but I don't know how common it is. I listed W E C Reid and Co as a business and W E C Reid, G W Reid, C Penman, L M Satterthwaite, and A K Ibbotson as individuals on separate lines. I was following the instructions for businesses with proprietors listed.

What do I do about all the businesses named in the listing? There are several similar listings where accounting firms have listed all the other businesses they are associated with.

And if I do list them, would I also pick out individual names as well (like W P Warner)?

I am attaching a second image as well.

Would someone like to have a shot at guessing the last name of Edgar W (living at #23)? I've been through all the G's in the New Zealand electoral registers and not found any name that might fit. The first char must be a G and the next char is probably an O. The third char is tricky (I or L?), the 4th looks like a G whilst the fifth could be any choice from a bunch of chars. Then the question arises - is there a 6th char? Thanks for any ideas.

(Some of us only have time to check in every few days, especially this time of year.)

I thought this might've been answered back during Part 1 of this project, but if so I can't quickly find it.

For clergy, that's definitely the denomination and can be skipped. (I believe you'll also see RC.) However, for people not explicitly identified as clergy, I'm not sure that's a safe assumption. "Salvation Army" is one (likely) interpretation of "(SA)", but if that's the correct interpretation, I'd call that a business/organization (and thus keyable) rather than a religious denomination (and thus skippable).

Wow - still no replies? Is nobody watching this board or does nobody have an answer? Anyway I think I've figured it out. One of the entries was for a Rev so my conclusion is that (M) means Methodist, (P) means Presbyterian and (SA) is Salvation Army. Strange that 3 Salvation Army members live next door to each other! So the bottom line is I ignore any bracketed characters when they refer to religions.

NZ - characters in brackets after names

I'm seeing a few instances of names followed by 1 or 2 characters in brackets. Normally something in brackets is a company name and would be keyed on a separate line. But these don't look like companies. Anyone have an idea what they mean and if they should be keyed?

Given that we aren't supposed to assume anything about abbreviations, I think you have to key all the variants on Mabel School. I'm a bit curious as to why all these farmers are at a school, though. If it were a farming college, they'd be called lecturers, surely?

I agree we don't key the place names as shown, but it was decided in the previous run of the project that if it says Somewhere Station, then that's a farm = a business, and so should be keyed.

I would key the Robinsons example exactly as seen, leaving the (Dunedin) where it is, and including the parentheses. Company names of this format are quite common, indicating a branch office or date of (re-)formation. But no one would put the initial The or owner's initials last on their letterhead or over the door -- that's just a directoryism we fix.

Not so bad, but you did make the mistake of assuming that the lists are always complete. And of expanding abbreviations.

Many small towns just aren't on the list, override when necessary and don't worry about it. To override, press f7, (if you are on a mac, that's command-7)

When it says Jos, key Jos, When Jas, key Jas, When Dvd, Key Dvd. Again you will sometimes have to override.

Hi

Unfortunately no way to get it back.

One of the first things to ask is have you read the keying standards which tells you how to key entries.

One of the first rules is 'key what you see' abbreviated names are keyed as they are and not expanded. In addition the suggested entries (drop down box) (wikiwiki) is just that - a suggestion. Again, you should key as seen unless the field help or project instructions tell you differently.

http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=World_Archives_...

If you review the keying standards on how to enter data your accuracy rating will soon improve.

For every project you do you should also regularly read the field helps and Wiki page for that project.

Happy keying
