I can see several ways how. but no real reason why....

On a Multiple monitor system you can put the image viewer on the other monitor and transcribe from it, and it won't disappear.
Yes, the image viewer is in a different window, but they could have noted down all the information from it then read it back from their notes to key it in?

I deleted all the extra lines and corrected the mistakes for the first few sets I had, then rejected the last 2 sets -as I thought that might penalize the keyer more than just 'did not key as seen'!

I tried to replicate keying like that, but when I tried it using the image viewer the image disappeared when I started to key.

I guess they are keying the 5 cards using the Image Viewer at the top - would CTRL+C followed by CTRL+V actually copy this to the other cards I wonder? Hypothetical, I'm not going to try it! Just a thought - presumably the keyer is being credited with 25 records per set rather than 5. Do they then not get penalised by error count if we delete the excess whole lines? They will be penalised for the remaining 5 records though, as there are lots of errors.

It could be done by viewing all the images in the set one by one in a separate window while going through the image set keying all the records onto each image, but I can't imagine why someone would do this.

I've never seen this before - but someone has keyed all 5 cards on one record. I thought the others would be blank but they have repeated this for each card in the set and then re-ordered them so the card shown is at the top. Whoever is doing this - you are making a lot of work for yourself! Just hope whoever it is reads this.

Edited to add: there are keying errors too eg expanding abbreviations, omitting arrondisment numbers for Paris addresses etc

I work on a PC, but when I type in the Arrondissement Number and Paris as the last entry for an image, the same thing happens. Either click on "more" and finish typing the data in the new box and click OK to fill the record box; or enter the Arrondissement Number and Paris before you key any of the other data in any of the other boxes

I just started entering these records and read through all of the previous posts before starting :) One question about the diacritical marks -- I am finding no marks on many of the original entries, but there is supposed to be according to the prompt and to the cities list link. Do I type as seen or do I type the correct version with diacritical marks? I realize that the diacritical marks are required when printed, but should they be added? Thanks!

Re: Electoral Cards. MA Abbreviation

I think "M A" may stand for Maître Auxiliare, ie Uncertified Teacher. Also if the cards you were doing were 1921/22 then 1901 is likely to be the stamp for birth year. At age 21 it would have been the first time these people could vote and it seems they may have stamped up a load of cards for use and amendment with full date of birth later. I haven't seen any election years stamped other than at the top of the card or those with 1910 when they are stamped at the bottom of the card as part of the Commune and Département.

Thanks for your reply, but it was beaten by the witching hour, so I did key it as seen as a Départment; it can be removed by the arbitrator. I suspect the 1901 wasn't his DoB either, but rather the election date, as they surely wouldn't have had a set of handstamps for DoBs. In future I must take more careful note of where these MAs appear and try to elucidate what they mean.

Latest errors seen in review

I'm seeing a lot of errors lately while reviewing... please keep the field helps open!

There have been a lot of errors regarding the residence field: I'm seeing cards where the arrondissement number is clearly there, but nothing has been entered. Also, please do not try to decipher the street address. The only entry needed in residence field is the name of the commune, or the arrondissement number (only 1 through 20) followed by the word Paris. If either of these two things are not there, just leave the field empty... no need to mark it 'blank'.

Regarding the department field: all of the departments are in the drop down menu. Sometimes they are abbreviated - if so, please key as seen. The only exceptions to the departments in the drop down menu are the old departments of Charente Inferieure, Seine Inferieure and Loire Inferieure. These are usually abbreviated to Chte Inf, S Inf and L Inf. Sometimes you will have to key another country in the department field. Algerie, Russie and Belgique are the most common ones I have come across.

Lastly - there is no need to F7 every field - only first and last name if it stays pink after you have made your entry.

Thanks!

You and Paul make a good point, and I wouldn't want to confuse anyone into assuming that they should not ultimately key all abbreviated names as seen. I'll step back and think about this some more before posting anything. I think supplying a list of common abbreviations can be helpful for new keyers; I for one struggled for some time over some abbreviations - it took me many attempts before I deciphered "Gve" (the abbrevation for Gustave). Also, there are some names seen over and over and others seen, but not as commonly; perhaps any list could be limited to the top 50.

Thanks for the feedback.
Dave

My only concern is where you draw the line on these, it could turn into a monumental task. I downloaded a list of French men's names, just to assist my own attempts are reading some of the writing in the beginning - I would offer to share this but it runs to 20+ pages!!

Hi, regarding your question about abbreviations, it appears to be very uncommon for prefixes and suffixes to be written. The only ones I have come across are "père" and "fils" (Father & Son). All abbreviations you see on the prenom lines are abbreviations of first names. The most common method of abbreviating names seems to be to write the first letter or letters of a given name followed by the last letter or letters omitting the middle ones, such as "Vor" for Victor, "Fois" for François, "Augte" for Auguste, or "Alexdre" for Alexandre. I have been thinking about compiling a list of common names and abbreviations for a while and your message has prompted me to pull one together and post it on the wiki page soon.

For what it's worth, I can transcribe (and transliterate into Latin alphabet) typed Cyrillic-alphabet languages--as that's part of my day job--and can *sometimes* muddle through handwritten Cyrillic if it's printed/well-formed, though I don't speak a word of any Cyrillic-using language and would be as slow & inaccurate at finding useful data in a freetext paragraph of handwritten Russian as I am for the handwritten Italian of the Pavia records or the French of the electoral cards.

But if the Cyrillic pages were made into their own project, I could probably take a crack at them, too. (I can usually pick out names and probably also dates & places, but not much beyond that.) Maybe come up with some examples for other non-Russian-speakers to follow, too.

That's not uncommon. the lists, by their nature are not all inclusive.

Also... You can read Russian at all? might be handy for ushmm projects. Right now they are marking all the Russian language docs as "cover page"*. For lack of speakers and Russian language support within the tool.

*Or a "cyrillic" form that's nearly the same thing.

Did not know that about schools. I've been out for awhile. But the cursive is getting easier to read, the more I do.I'm glad it's not in Russian-I find it very hard to read the cursive in Russian. The letters are formed quite differently.Well. back to the cards. Thanks for everyones input.

Question-is it possible for a lieu de naissance not to appear in the drop down list? I had one very legible, but not in list. Thanks for all the help.

And some schools aren't teaching cursive writing anymore. Just think, they'll struggle twice as much as us if they volunteer for indexing. In addition to the fancy cursive tab, Ancestry will add a plain old cursive tab from our grade school era!

Just a thought....just saying.....!

Yes, but ball point pens weren't really commercially viable before about 1950. And Typewriters weren't widely in use a hundred years ago either. And pencils aren't great.

But even with all modern innovations, to this day people still write in cursive. Sometimes with extra curse. Even on forms that say "please print".

French Electoral Cards

Not a brand new project, i know, but a few questions, if I may. I recently returned here after time offline due to hospitalization, and realized while the handwriting is not the easiest to read, the numbers also can be a challenge. Is there a key of old numbers penmanship, like there is for letters? And, also, a key for French prefixes ans suffixes? For example, Doctor, Senior, junior, Jean Smith the second, etc. If it was written out in French I could understand it, but each writer seems to have their own abbreviations. Thanks for any help. I am determined to get out of the " B "s this week.

Thanks, Kate. I made it 15, as that slash looked too posh to be a crossing out. But I have a nasty feeling I was a few seconds too late and it had timed out, as I don't think my record count changed. So someone else may get it anyway.

I changed .fr to .co.uk, and now my only option (logged in to .co.uk) is a Worldwide sub. Curious.

Any ideas what the day number is here? I'd have gone for 8 if it weren't so different from the 8 in the year. I came across the identical mystery symbol in an address, so I wonder if it's some convention of the time like the squiggly 5? An elided 15 is another guess.
