Lodz/gender column mistake

Could someone adress this question from project discussion page:

"Q; if the Männlich and Weiblich have obviously been put in the opposite columns but the writer has not changed it at the top as they sometimes do, do I key as seen or change to the correct sex? (...)"?

Some time ago I had a set where the writer mixed up Männlich and Weiblich columns. I dislike to enter obviously incorrect information but I decided to key as seen. Now that I see there're more sets like this, I would like to know someone's else opinion.

Are you saying they are only seen as J R P, or something like that? So no indicator of any full name but you know that they were victims/survivors - if so, yes, key a record with just the initials.

And yes, because this is a student project those who volunteered to arbitrate we are asking that you key only a few image sets to familiarise yourself with the project.

World Memory Project Update

We recently hit a huge milestone for the World Memory Project - the contribution of 2 million records!!

Currently I am in the Museum preparing for the 20th Anniversary event occurring today and tomorrow. Having the opportunity to walk through the exhibits and see the pictures and the emotions that come along with that brings the importance of the contributions being made by our community to a higher level. It is one thing to research your own family history but then to turn around and give of your time to contribute by indexing records that will help others find their families is amazing and inspiring.

Time is of the essence to bring the records from the victims and survivors of the Holocaust to those who are still alive and looking to find word of what happened to their family and friends. These records are not always the easiest to read and interpret but the difference that your contributions will make is untold. If you are curious about the World Memory Project and what difference your contributions could make please watch one of our videos, http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJye3JJV24onzDmjoYi1_c....

I am passionate about the World Archives Project and the World Memory Project for many reasons (love of family and history, desire to help others, wanting to make a difference, ...) and would love to hear from you why you participate.

Thank you for all that you contribute, for you skills, passion and desire to give to such a wonderful project!

I have seen quite a few that also had entered Krakau as residence and no for Photo.

On this form the primary person his the person below the head of the household and residence and photo relate to that person.

To assume when it says "Aufenthalt abgelehnt" there is no Kennkarte is correct. He just keyed the header, but nothing beyond that.

So if you missed these, there's more to do.

Batches numbered below about #800 will be arbitrated, and above that will be a-review.
There is one common long form we want to extract all names from. It's 29 questions and typically spans 3-4 pages.

It has the header

Dotazník [Questionnaire]

and Subheaders
údaje o žadateli.
The intention was to make things easier on the keyers by not making them translate large bodies of text in paragraph form. It's not a direction I particularly like. Since I feel that if we have to read enough of an entry in paragraph form to extract birth date and place of the primary person, we might as well get the rest of the family. But I am constrained to arbitrate according to directions.

We do want to extract all names from preprinted forms and tables.

The directions don't say to key only the primary person on all images. This only applies to "records such as correspondence, biographies, narratives, or other documents that do not consist of pre-printed forms and would otherwise require translating and reading through a block of text".

So if you have a pre-printed form you key all the names. Or if you have a list of names which are not in a block of text.

Since there will contributors keying who may not be familiar with the geography of the area we were attempting to make keying the address more simple. ;)

If you encounter records where the entire address is in one field key what is in that field. If the address is broken down into different components key only the city and/or district.

Hmm, looks quite complicated. The instructions say:

"Key the person's residence location. This may be an address, city, region, or other jurisdiction. A residence may be indicated by words such as "Present address of residence in the United Kingdom," "Place of residence of husband (wife) in Great Britain," "Address," "Adresa," or "District of domicile." If a street address and city or district of residence are listed in separate fields, only key the city and/or district as the residence and do not key the street address."

So this seems to be saying that if the street address and city are all listed in the same field, you would key the whole thing. But I haven't done much on this particular project - would need someone who is in the know to confirm this!

I've come back to helping with this project after a bit of a break, so I'm lacking a bit of confidence in my own understanding of the rules.
I'm arbitrating the USHMM records at the moment and am noticing that many of the discrepancies occur around how the addresses are keyed. The first person will key the whole address ...15 Bloggs Street, London, NW and the second person will key it as just London NW. I've read the help files and the way I understand it keyer 2 is correct, but as so many people seem to have keyed the whole address I thought I better check ;-)

@Paulmd199 and katerimmer I do have a question on the Ergän forms concerning the ID issued date: I have yet to find an instance where the words "Kennakrte auszugeben am" were present (even allowing for the typo in the directions) I am curious if another date is being substituted in review... or if it's something else.

My understanding is that if the aufenthalt was abgelehnt, then they were not issued an ID (kennkarten nr) number. I did not see any given while keying Krakow part 3 and I have not seen any so far while keying part 4.

@Paulmd199 and katerimmer My other question on the Ergän form concerns the Residence of the head of household. I have been taking that from the Line immediately below Familienvorstand, reading Wohnung. I have not been keying the street address, But have typically just been keying Krakau. Is this correct?

The only fields I have been keying for head of household is given name, surname, and relationship (Head). In the instructions it says for residence location, Key the residence in question #5 from the field labeled "genaue Wohnung: Ort." Genaue Wohnung: Ort only appears farther down and it only concerns the primary person or relative on the form. Also when we were keying Krakow part 2, any photos that were attached to these forms were taken of only the primary person or relative. So I have also been leaving that field blank for the head of household.

That's right as far as I know, Paul.

I have seen a few where the keyer has keyed an ID issued date when they shouldn't have, but not the other way round. But I think most of the image sets that you keyed were reviewed by other people while I was asleep!

There are a few tricky rules about which fields are keyed as seen and which have to be standardised, that catch some people out - years should be keyed as seen if they are 2 digits or 4 digits (inevitably some are written as 3 digits on the image!), marital status should be expanded to the full word but nationality is to be keyed as seen. Also if they have lived in Krakau "seit geburt" or similar, this should be keyed into the "lived in Krakow since - year" field but I have seen some where the keyer keyed it in the day field instead.

So happy to see that the keying instructions to Krakau part 4 have been changed and simplified. Hopefully now it will be a lot clearer for keyers and arbitrators.

1) There is a second page of the Ergänzungsbogen, which contains the signature of the primary person. No information will be keyed from this page. It is to be classified as "Cover Page"
2) For images where the left and right side pages have been separated, only the left side page (the side that lists the names), should be classified as a "Household Member List." The right-side page should be classified as "Cover Page."

Hopefully everybody takes the time to read over the new instruction page before keying and arbitrating.

No, the ones I can remember seeing with K in the gender columns, some have it in one column, some in the other, and a lot of the time there is also a check mark or horizontal line to show the actual gender, often in the other box from the one with the K in it. And usually there is a K for most or all people on the page, men, women and children.
