You have found a confusing one. I conferred with my wife who has gone through some of those books for her research and this is new to her. I would agree that "took letter" and professing the faith are "joining". For ones like those two I would probably use the earlier date and a location of Providence.
Another question in my mind is, if there is a location associated with the page whether the second date should be keyed with that location, to place the person at both locations.
Someone who knows that particular book section well could tell us exactly what and where things are happening but we don't have that luxury.
(In reviewing I would be flexible, accepting any reasonable interpretation that captures the person's name.)
